GOPNIKS IN 2023?

  • I think you all know what Slavs do most of their lives - they squat and wear Adidas tracksuits. Squatting Slav is probably the biggest Eastern European meme out there...and I hate it, really. Because this image is based on the depiction of Gopniks - a real "subculture" that roamed the streets of Russian cities in the 1990s and 2000s. Just like their foreign counterparts - chavs or bogans, they were despised by literally everyone else. The Gopnik’s origin dates back to the 80s, when this name was used to identify badly educated, lower-class, bigoted guys who are at the edges of the criminal world. In the next 10-15 years gopniks were a real nightmare for all those living in disadvantaged neighborhoods of Russian cities: every late night encounter with them could have ended with you losing property, being humiliated and beaten. Miraculously, their appearance and style (shaved heads, tracsuits, weird hats) somehow became popular on the Internet in the middle of 2010s, and now everyone pictures a typical Slavic male as a gopnik. Today let's talk about how real, traditional GOPniks were born in the Soviet Union, how this "movement" was reborn after the collapse of the USSR and gave birth to the image of a dude in an Adidas suit with a shaved head, which has become one of the biggest memes about Russia. And lastly, about how this movement finally died...and what came to replace it!

Hey there. Somehow you found my video and decided to watch it. So let me introduce myself. I'm Sergei and I'm from Russia. My channel is about my native country. I want to tell English-speaking viewers about the real Russia, about its past and present. Unfortunately, you can find a lot of propaganda about Russia on the Internet, both from the Russian media and from the Western ones. I want to tell you about Russia, as it really is, the country in which I was born, grew up, and lived all my life.

In Mongolia, we had them too, during late 80s to early 2000s in the cities. Especially in the capital and the biggest city beside the capital. We called them hooligans or хулиган in Mongolian. Some teenagers from countryside sums (something akin to towns or villages) and small hamlets tried to emulate these guys during early 2000s but they quickly died out. Hooligans were exclusively from the third worst poverty stricken part of cities around shittiest apartments.

There is missing part about the 80th in the USSR. Those gopnik fellows were mostly in Leningrad and Kazan terrorizing the streets of respective cities and sometimes touring to Moscow.
In the city of Moscow there were so-called Rockers (named after Britain subculture) vs not Mods but Lubers. Moscow Rockers were actually weed smoking hippies that listend to gothic rock performed by mr.Tzoi of North Korean etnicity and considered themselfs as 'the westeners'. The Lubers dressed in similiar checked pants of that modern Re-dun weebs and had a buzzcut. Luber subculture was based on two pillars: so-called true-leninism (being a typical proletariat) and pumping weights.
So Lubers raided and attacked Rockers for inproper dress for the soviet people and humiliated them by cutting long hair with a knife. In the 90th Lubers were gone away with leninsm and thus converted to ordinary gopniks.

That's strange, I didn't see any diminishment of the numbers of Dresiaże. To be honest i think they are not possible to fully eradicate as they are spawn of specific living conditions and values passed down from generation to generation. I personally see as many of them as before and I thing that as long as we will have "patologia" (colloquial name of people -mostly poor- who exhibit undesirable thug like behaviors.) And yes, I would sey that Dresiaże and Gopniks are different culture from the rest of their respective societies, if not an different Civilisations.Theyre moral code and unwritten law of conduct on the street is very different from the rest of the society - to the point of culture shock.

i agree that "gopniks" do evolve. obviously you mentioned how it was in Russia but you didnt really develop for Poland. and having read the page about "dresy", they are pretty similar with how they used to be in Romania (maybe Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia too but borrowing some Russian concepts).
dresy in Poland (from dres - slang for tracksuit) were basically a middle point between the Russian gopnik and the British chav, whereas in Romania we called them golani or cocalari, the former term was famously used by our first post-communist president to describe those who protested against him.
anyway these people basically have the same traits as you described, usually short hair (not always), at first wearing trackies, but now they wear pretty much anything, like puffed up jackets, hoodies, leather jackets, tank tops, whatever, they usually have nothing better to do so they are aggresive for no reason, they drive clapped out German cars with rolled back mileage, they just love everything macho, they are pretty anti-intellectual and behave like absolute "peasants". but they are basically evolving in the sense that back in the 2000s they were broke as shit but now they can afford what most of the urban population can. still, that doesnt change the fact that they are pretty despised by lots of people and have such a high image of themselves. i think thats pretty much it tho. oh yeah PS, you can see some of these people as politicians, usually in local politics acting like thugs and indulging in corruption ;)

@greengeck0 I disagree with your assessment. Marozas is a word for alcoholic, Zekas - prisoner, Kentas - your friend. Gopnik in Lithuania are called Forsas or Urlaganas. They usually gather by house entry or somewhere on the bench, drinking beer, eating sunflower seeds and harassing passerby which could lead to mugging or a fight. Usual phrases are "you are not prom here", "why are you looking", "do you have a smoke?", "do you have money? im short of", and in 00's "do you have a phone? i need to make a call" and if you say you don't have, follows "what if i find", then you get fleeced. It was scary if they gather around your house and you ave no choice but to walk past them. In the big cities they were active in the 90's and first have 00's then slowly disappeared. That's how I remember.

As this GOPnik term origination is a subject of debate the other version that it comes from bandid songs 'gop-stop' (a robbery) and 'gop so smykom' (a gop(nik, a robber) with a violin bow)

Ha! When you mentioned the "traditional gopniks" some neurons in my brain flashed and I remembered something. And don't you dare judging me, but when I was a kid there was a book, not favorite, but interesting enough for me to read a couple and more times, and yes, of course it was "Флаги на башнях" or in bulgarian - "Знамена на кулите" or in english - "Flags on the Battlements". I've always rooted for Igor, felt sorry and angry for Vanda, but there was this damn SOB, good for nothing lowlife - Гриша Рыжиков...Grisha, Grisha, Grisha... The true "bezprizonik" and proto-gopnik. And it's good that they're disappearing! :) Cheers

We in Spain had the " canis " in the 90s ans early 2000s, wierdly enough that was a good time from the economic perspective, but they were somewhat similar, cheap sports clothes, a los of golden " jewels ", massive amounts of cigarettes and alcohol, involvement in criminal activities (the most serious being heroine trade), though they had a somewhat distinct flavour from eastern european similar groups or british chavs

The winner will then loot the loser of their merchs (Dakimakuras being the most sought after) while "persuading" the ones that surrendered for "nuke codes".

    • @dickystrike6966
      @dickystrike6966 Рік тому

There are several missing parts of the story and here is one of them.
In the 90th when this subculture was at its peak the norm for real gopnik was to sorta relax in a dancehall. The relaxation part was to have a long french kiss with a random chick, to kickstart a fight with a random guy... or to actually dance if you are in St.Peterburg, not other Russia. Why? Because LSD and XTC were huge in that city and local gopniks enjoyed them a lot. That's how drugs brought gopniks to the emerging rave scene of SPB where a new genre of Russian donk aka hardbass was created. Later on SPB dance radio started 90th revival with that viral balley 'gopnik' video that was all over internet and shown in here... and it made a meme as we know it.
Hardbass scene is almost the same since 90th and development there is minimal. Preferable electronic dance music among youngsters now is Russian Phonk with dumb bass hard in another way. And the drugs are no more LSD or XTC but spice and meth.
