More like the 1993 Russian Constitutional Crisis. Negotiations and peace talks were held the entire time this occurred, and the crisis was limited to only one region of the country. Interestingly, this group still controls some regions in Mexico.

There was a ceasefire signed between the two. The EZLN now controls several autonomous municipalities in Chiapas. Currently they're dealing with clashes between them, the cartels and the mexican government.
Actually one of the things that prevented a Massacre from occurring was that the Mexican People in General took the side of the Zapatistas and there were countless Protests so that the Government and the Army did not continue attacking them

At some point the mexican military used planes to fight the zapatists and a few gunfights, though this conflict didnt even last 2 weeks
