- Hello there! If the focus ring on your Nikon 18-55mm DX VR lens is loose, you hear plastic parts jingling inside it, or your focus ring is hard to turn, LISTEN UP! I have found a quick easy fix for this very common Nikon kit lens. I bought this lens second-hand and it has been doing this for years and I finally took it apart and was happy to find this was a very easy fix by just removing the grip, front cover, and focus lens. Watch this video and you should be able fix this problem quickly with just a roll of tape and a pry tool or flat screwdriver! Make sure to place the back protective cover on the lens so you don't scratch the back lens and you can set the lens down while working on it. Enjoy, and I hope this helps!!!

Absolute life saver! Probably the most useful video I’ve actually watched on UA-cam! Anyone who’s had this problem and the plastic bit is broken or missing, the pick up tube from a cleaning spray bottle works perfectly
DUDE IT WORK!!!!!
Bro...! You are a life saver. I searched my flat like a CIA Swat Team to find something that could possibly fit. The pick up tube fit right over the screw. Thanks!
@@_3NVY_ it really did work. Such a life saver!
@@lachsimzwaifel I know right!!! Just awesome!
In my case the fitting was a little too tight, so I widened with a series of incrementally thicker screwdrivers.
Thanks for posting! Helped me. Size of the bushing is 4.0mm OD, 2.7mm ID, 2.0mm length. McMaster part identified in other posts was too big, most notably on OD. I used Pololu item number 1970, which has above listed dimensions. I checked dimensions on new bushings with calipers before using. Had to sand length, but OD and ID were correct as delivered. Material is clear/white nylon rather than black, hard plastic of original, but that didn't seem to matter. Use at your own discretion. Could not get parts from Nikon or Nikon dealer; would have had to send lens to Nikon for repair.
What an amazingly simple repair. With mine, the little plastic retaining ring was pretty squished into an oval, but some careful reshaping got it close enough to snap back into place. One additional piece of advice. I didn't realize that there is something of a burr on one side of retainer. After I reassembled the lens I could feel it catching slightly as the zoom went in and out. I took it apart again and flipped the retainer over so the sharp edge was not catching on the lens barrel. Now it's smooth like butter. Thank you!
Hi there, Thank you so much for posting this video as I was resigned to buying a new lens for €200 until I found your excellent repair tutorial. Really very grateful. All the best. Graham Hurley (Ireland)
I could hug you!!! I have just saved my daughters lens, it had this exact problem. I could not have done it without your video xx
Thanks, just bought one for $10 - the owner said that AF is malfunctioning and manual focus cannot reach infinity. With your video I fixed it in 5 minutes. Cool purchase :) Thank you!
Really helpful video thank you. Saved either an expensive repair bill or a new lens. Really easy to follow and as you say it just snapped back in, no glue needed. I have no practical skills whatsoever but still managed to do it in about 10 minutes. You’re a star!
You sir just saved me from having to take my lens to a repair shop on the DAY OF a photo shoot!!
I rarely used my kit lens but it always worked fine. But then one day it would have serious focus issues, and lo and behold, one of those little black rings popped out and putting it back in fixed my issue!!!
So glad I found your video. I just repaired my autofocus! Thank you so much. All went so smoothly.
Thank you for your video. You help me to change a paper weight to a working Nikon lens again. A million Thanks.
Thank u for this! Actually I misread the title, i thought it was about how to fix my error autofocus. I realized it after I had gone through half of ur vid (and yes I did disassemble the lens) but magically it worked!!!!!! Still cant believe it! Thanks !!!!!
I just bought my daughter a used Nikon D3200 for her first DSLR & with not known anything about DSLR's I didn't know to look for this issue nor did the seller tell me the lens was having issues. Thanks to you and your video the lens is functioning great again. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you so much for this Stephen! I wish I saw this first... saw another video, spent an hour totally disassembling and still couldn't fix. Saw this video, three minutes later I was done. Thanks again.
I thought my little 18-55 was ruined ! Now thanks to Stephen's video... she is back in action. : ) Thank you very much...
Thank you so much! I recently found this issue on my Nikon 3200. The little bushing had fallen out and jammed the autofocus. It took a while to find it, it was jammed in a slot in the focal length slider. I had no idea how it came apart, but your video clearly showed the entire process. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video!! As a new photographer, I often feel like I am way out of my league here but your video made me feel better and I was able to repair the lens!
I wish I found this video sooner! So easy! Thank you!
It took me forever to get that little piece over the screw. Over an hour...but it works again!!!! Thank you so much for this video!!! You saved me a lot of money
With your help, I fixed my 18-55 and now it's back in service. Thanks!
oh my gosh thank you so much this is exactly what I needed and I definitely would not have figured this out if it was not for your video. Thank you again.
Just fixed my lens...thanks so much for this fabulous demo!!
WOW! Think you so much, I was thinking I had to pull the whole lens apart. This makes life so much more simple.
Thank you SO MUCH for this instructional video. I have just fixed my lens which had the exact same problem. Your instructions are clear and concise, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
Great informative video. Just repaired mine, your instructions made it very simple. Great help thanks.
Cheers, glad I could help!
Amazing solution! Simple and fast! It worked like a charm! thanks!
Bravo! Thanks for this video. It helped me repair my 18-55.
Really helpful, clear video. Fixed my lens - thank you.
Just followed your video and fixed my lens. It was exactly what you said it was. Excellent!
Absolutely perfect! Thank you. I bought mine used and it had this exact issue. Fixed now!
Amazing!..Had written my lens off and this video has been so useful. One of the little plastic rings was rattling around inside and had somehow been flattened. Watched this video, followed the steps and bingo! May thanks
Spot on. In my case, the bushing was snapped so I 3D printed a replacement! A little trial and error, but it's saved me the cost of a new lens!
You still have the sizes of this rings? I have the same problem, solved it using super bond, but this piece is fragile, I think it won't last long.
Very good and easy to follow demonstration. Many thanks.
Many many thanks for this Tutorial, it helped so much to repair it by my own... 🤗🤗
Thanks Stephen! Your video allowed me to repair my girlfriend's lens! I struggled a bit with the step where you use the pry tool. I didn't have a tool exactly like that, and I ended up using a pair of measuring spoons with thin, flat stainless steel handles. Prying one side at a time wasn't working, but the clips suddenly let go when I inserted handles into both sides simultaneously. I hope that helps someone!
Sweet! This is exactly the info I needed. Thanks for making this!!
Thanks for the video, Stephen. My wife had exactly the same lens with exactly the same problem, which meant autofocus often would not work and not let make any pictures. We thought we would have to change the whole camera, until I stumbled upon your video.
Just saved my life. THANK YOU MAN!
Great video! Thanks for posting. Fixed my lens in no time!
You're my hero, man. I recently bought my first dSLR off the classifieds. It was a mint D3100 with this same exact lens. I got it for peanuts, because the owner said, that the AF was malfunctioning. I took it home, took the lens apart and, sure enough, the little plastic ring had popped off the screw. It was jammed between the mechanisms inside the lens. A ten minute fiddle and my, now good as new, dirt cheap kit is in working order. I feel a bit bad for the owner because, she really believed, she was selling me an expensive brick.
Thank you! I thought this was going to cost me a new lens, but you sir saved my lens and my money 😉
Brilliant! This video gave me the confidence to tackle my DX 18-70 lens, slightly different cover which is removed by one screw then clipped off firmly ... inside there are three large silver mounting screws that had come loose. Tightened these then just a bit fiddly to get the two covers back on but hey presto! Good as new. Thank you Stephen.
thank you. fantastic clear explanation and demonstration.
Ditto with Ian Gardiner. Your instructions were crystal clear, and made for a quick and relatively easy repair!
Cheers, glad to help!
Thanks! This was very helpful. I had the same problem except the plastic ring was snapped in two, but I found the link to a replacement you posted in another comment. Nikon support said they couldn't supply one and wanted me to send the lens in for repair, which would have been much more expensive. (So thanks again!)
Thanks for your video. While I did replace my 18-55 with a 18-140 it's nice to have the old one working properly again.
Well done mate... repaird mine watching your video =) THX ALOT!!!
Great video. Just made my day better.
Much appreciated. This is exactly what happened to mine. Pretty easy fix. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for sharing this repair tip. Wow, just think how many lenses have been already recovered! And it seems like some sort of design or manufacturing problem. Those rings should not become loose so easily.
Thanks! I just managed to repair my 18-55 with this method :D
HI, Thank you so much for your video, I did fix the problem just as you said it would be, really clear and well laid out video.
Thanks a lot man. I thought I was going to throw some couple of bucks for the repair (or replacement of parts) but it only took minutes. Thanks for the tutorial video.
Incredibly helpful!
Thank you for this information. My daughter noticed while using my old D70 with the 18-55 mm lens a wobble on the autofocus (I now know what to call it) even though pictures appeared to be ok. You have given me the confidence to have a go at sorting it out.
My broken part was in two pieces but I managed to fit them in and all is good. Thank you so much.
Thats a good repair documentation.Good Job.Thanks a lot for sharing.
Thank you for the compliment, I hope it helped you out!
Very useful video and very informative and very nice THANKS SIR G

Thanks 👍 easy fix, dropped mine a few days ago , no need to look for replacement lens.😀
Thank You Very Much For Sharing it was very ilustrative
I'm a retired photo repairman, National Camera graduate. Found a good way to fix this. Stephen is right about every step of this. Sometimes you will find that the tiny plastic sleeve is broken. My fix was some appropriately sized heat shrink tubing, shrink one layer on the stud then another to bring to an acceptable depth. Be careful when you apply a heat gun, I prefer a hair dryer, less heat. Too much heat can melt the light greases used in many lens mechanisms. Use a light touch and just enough heat to shrink it.
Thank you for the kind words Wendell. I am glad you provided the heat shrink solution, that sounds like a perfect way to fix this. I will be trying my hand at fixing some old manual film SLRs and maybe I should post my process. Cheers
Just wanted to comment for others who can't find any heat shrink tubing to replace the plastic piece from the camera (mine was completely missing when I opened my camera).
I was able to cut a few mm of the back end of the ink tube in a standard ballpoint pen. However, the inner diameter of the plastic tube is just a little too small for the screw in my D3100. By using a pair of narrow tweezers and a hair dryer, I was able to gently stretch the plastic tube to fit around the peg in the camera. Since the fit is not perfect, you may want to apply a (very) small amount of glue to stabilize it. Be sure not to get in on any other part of the rails and let it fully dry before putting the camera back together!
Overall, thank you Stephen and Wendell for the tips--I'm about to go to Kilimanjaro in a week and was able to rescue my camera just in time!
One ring was broken in half. I used your idea, cut a tiny bit from an ink tube with a sharp knife, and squeezed a nail through it until it was large enough to fit. It worked great! There's a tiny bit of play, but way better than before.
Big thanks, this video is helpful!!!
huge thanks man from Slovakia!!!
My pleasure, glad to help!
Thanks a lot, it worked for me. I owe you.

My pleasure, glad to help!
i opened up my second hand lens and it was literally filled with garbage! someone tried to fix the wobble with paper, stuck around the inside of the lens. and 2 of the tiny black screws were missing. so i improvised and rolled up some tape and fixed it! thank you for this informative video
Thank-you! Worked a treat...
Thank you so much used this and Shanen Soltani Icely's video to help me fix a dropped Nikon lens!
Thank you! Mine just loosened up. This looks like an easy fix!
Cheers, glad to help!
Great video, Totally had this problem on my 18-55mm. I read thru the comments and found the replacement part supplier with Pololu. Should be an easy fix when I get the parts in and my old lens can live on another day. thanks!
Thank you so much for this video!!

Thank you man!!! you helped me a lot with this video. I just dropped my lens and I had the same problem.
Glad to help!
hello sir! can you please share a video on how to disassemble new 18-55 lens. i.e the 18-55 vr G II. I tried to fix mine and now I'm at a point where I don't know how to open the barrel and I failed to find a video which shows the disassemble process of new 18-55. Thank you
