Tried this on my lens and fixed my dead autofocus. I'm no expert on this so please so proceed with caution. Hope this helps!!! :) watch whole vid before attempting to repair!
................THANK YOU SO MUCH ! Man, I just have my lens back following your tips! ! I also used some WD40 on the gearswheels. It is now less noisy and really smooth. Today was a good day !!!Thanks again!
Thank you for this excellent Video! I just managed to fix my 55-200 in a similar fashion. Without watching this I wouldn't have had the guts to open the lens and your tips were very helpful!
Thank you very much for an excellent video. Part you way through you mentioned that it could have been either and electrical or mechanical problem with the lens. This got me thinking. I gave my lens a firm tap on the side. Hey presto, turns out that it was simply jammed and now works fine. Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Your video was awesome! My telephoto lens will not work at all. It use to work intermittently. My smaller lens works perfectly so I know its the larger lens. When I try to use autofocus, there's no sound at all or there's a stuck sound, so it probably just needs cleaning.
Footnote: VERY IMPORTANT WARNING at 4:58 where the auto focus connector corners at a 45 degree angle. When this gentleman says that the flex cables are fragile, he is serious. BE VERY CAREFUL. All I did was turn the housing ever so slightly and the flex cable tore in half at that 45 degree angle.
Hey man thank you sooo much!!! mine was broken too and the autofocus was dead I tried all what u said and now my 18-105 is back from dead :) by the way sorry for my english
don't mind that, I inserted the audio note just for people not to start messing around with the ribbons and electrical components that much before trying to loosen up the gears. if you wanna see what I was talking about in that audio segment jump to minute 9:04 and follow those instructions. Hope it works for you!! Cheers
This helped a lot but the problem re-occurs so what I do is switch the camera off and leave the AF on then turn the lens manually a little to the left and a little to the right and it solves the problem without having to dismantle it again.
Does not need any lube, the spindles are polished stainless steel and the gears are a type of engineering nylon that gives a lovely smooth low friction bearing without the need of lubrication. As well as optics I service watches and clocks and if you embody the same high standards of cleanliness servicing camera optics you will solve a vast majority of issues. Poor storage and lack of use causes so many problems, get them out and exercise them. Store carefully with silica gel desiccants and gently blow off any contaminants. Avoid those air duster aerosols!! They blow contaminants into your electronics and optics.
all I had to do was manually turn the gears I indicate in that part of the video for about two minutes to get the motor working and that's what makes the magic happen.
sorry man, hope someone else kicks in and helps, I only got to that part of the disassembly because my lens problem was there, if not id be glad to help.
Hi, nice video you had. I do have a question, how did you fix the autofocus connector which connected to the bayonet? I accidentally pull it out, and I'm trying to put it back but it seems I have to do with some tricks. Hope you could help me a bit. Thank you
Hello, I have Nikon AF-S 35mm F2.8G DX lens (3 years old) and recently it started having problem with AF on liveview. It keeps hunting or out of focus but never on spot. However, on viewfinder autofocus works perfectly. Do you know what could be the issue? I have Nikon D5300 camera and other 2 lens of mine have no such issues either.
What about the auto pocus sensor in the camera? I have a d3200 that doesn't take sharp photos no matter what. It is the sensor because the green light inside the viewfinder flickers and doesn't stay on.
My 24-120mm just started shaking upon using auto focus. Is that the silent wave motor? I don’t have a clean room to try and fix it myself, anyone know an approximate repair cost?
Perfect! I was able to fix my 18-55 lens because of this video. But at 3:00 I was trying to remove the screw, I accidentally pulled it too much then the wire was cut. What is that for anyway? I just ignored it and after putting it all back together, the lens work perfectly.
Tengo una nikon dx, af-s nikkor 55-200 mm 1:4-6.G,. No reconoce el zoom automatico, tiene que ser manual, se le cayo a la persona y le provoco ese defecto. Me puede ayudar?
Hi guys. I´ve a problem with the VR function. When it´s on, the camera have a noisy vibration. I´ve uploaded a video: ua-cam.com/video/lwPljuZUNTQ/v-deo.html. Any idea?
I've got the same lense. while trying to take off the bayonet mount ring(which was broken) I accidentally cut the wire. Any ideas what can i di ,how to fix it? :(((( Please help people
If you are talking about the very first black wire you encounter its not a big deal, peel it a little bit and clamp it with the screw (This was a while ago but if I recall you should be able to fix it like that) I think there are a few seconds in the video where I explain this too. Hope it helps if not, reply
that black thing is a bitch for me too he he he was my first time to open and don't know where to start re assembling thanks to your video and suddenly came to the point that i accidentally open all the screw parts and all the screw that make me screwed also /...so tell me when you will open the body or anyone who has nikon d7000 who also video the dis assemble cleaning stuff like that.??? please i need to clean my nikon d7000 body kit
I feel like my Zeiss Lens is having a similar Problem. I am too scared to open it myself tho.. The lens is 4 Years old and i have bought it for 2.000,- Euro. I guess im going to send it in but that will be really expensive i guess.... this sucks :-(
+HandalE30 Don't listen to folks like that. You had the gonads to take it apart and help others. Some people are leaders and some are followers. That clown is a follower

This was the best video I found on this topic for this lens. Good job. 👍

Thanks man! This helped me. I was just able to repair my 2009 lens!
You’re welcome... it’s a satisfying feeling when you hear it working again huh
The irony of this video is the autofocus issues of the camera shooting it. ;p
I'm gonna put this guide to some good use though! Thank you!

i suspect the flex cables get more fragile by age, always wise to check if there is replacement cables available
Hey man thank you sooo much!!! mine was broken too and the autofocus was dead I tried all what u said and now my 18-105 is back from dead :) by the way sorry for my english
Excellent. Very helpful. I have an 18-105 with the manual focus ring showing some obstructions when turned. Hope to fix it with your help. Thanks!
Currently researching how feasible it is to buy broken lenses and fix them. Thanks!
Thank you! this video was to great help. now my nikon 18-105 works again !!
no problem!
Very nice, it worked for me. The problem was with motor. I had to soak it in petrol for a while and rotate it manually few times. Thanks much.
I'm going to try this on my $800 lens... Let you know the results. Wish me luck!
The results?
So how did it go for you??
+HandalE30, Why is there audio only, between 05:38 to 06:43? That seems like the most important part of your video.
don't mind that, I inserted the audio note just for people not to start messing around with the ribbons and electrical components that much before trying to loosen up the gears. if you wanna see what I was talking about in that audio segment jump to minute 9:04 and follow those instructions. Yes you are perfect , I have same lens with same problem 👍👍👏👏👏👏
thanx dude helped out alot !! .. IT WORKS PERFECT NOW .. I had the same problem you did :)
Ok, I did watch the whole video. What I was hoping for was, more on exactly broke in your lens. Perhaps mine would have a similar broken part.
all I had to do was manually turn the gears I indicate in that part of the video for about two minutes to get the motor working and that's what makes the magic happen.

May i suggest not to over tighten the lens when putting it back together, you will lose focus on farther objects.
I have this problem after I change the broken bayonet ! I just can`t wait to see if your advice, help me to fix this problem !
Since you have it apart go ahead and change the whole assembly !
Thanks for the video im just about to take my nikon 18-55 mm Vr apart.
Nice, let us know how it goes :)
Good video, thank-you!
Thanks got mine fixed too good as new
Why is part of your video blacked out?
where did you get the replacement ring adapter?
thanks for making this tutorial, very helpful. If I wanted to get to the aperture blades, what would be the best way? Front or back?
sorry man, hope someone else kicks in and helps, I only got to that part of the disassembly because my lens problem was there, if not id be glad to help.
it will be a total dis assembly,
jonathan mariano I was afraid of that...

Hi, nice video you had. I do have a question, how did you fix the autofocus connector which connected to the bayonet? I accidentally pull it out, and I'm trying to put it back but it seems I have to do with some tricks. Hope you could help me a bit.
Thank you
sorry for the late response, were you able to fix it? if not let me know.
Happened the same to me, did you fix it?
if u move the 4th lens. Anytime that is removed the lens has to be re calibrated.
I just pulled the loose part while fixing the bayonet mount and now I'm freaking out ! do you know how can I put it back without damaging everything?
Is there a repair center tor Nikon lenses
wow! it worked! thaaank you!!!

How is the focusring connected to the focussing glasselements.????
What about the auto pocus sensor in the camera? I have a d3200 that doesn't take sharp photos no matter what. It is the sensor because the green light inside the viewfinder flickers and doesn't stay on.
is there a tutorial how to fix the stabilizer on canon 24-105? :/
Cleaning auto focus motor with some contact head cleaner.
goood!
I have nikkor 18-55 GII ED with same broblem. A new motor solved my problem
thanks bro God bless
put you camera on a tripod and DON'T cut those important parts..
is this the same motor and CPU as AF-S 300mm F2.8G ED-IF lens? Where can I get parts from Nikon cause my lens motor and CPU board are both burned.
No, I bet the 300 2.8 has a proper ring SWM motor, not a crappy small motor.
Hi, where to buy the motor?
Regards
what problem you had? thanks for the video
it wouldn't auto focus, only manual... it didn't even try to autofocus on automatic. After this I never had a problem again.
i have the same problem ill try it soon Thanks!!!
My 24-120mm just started shaking upon using auto focus. Is that the silent wave motor? I don’t have a clean room to try and fix it myself, anyone know an approximate repair cost?
Hi, do you know what is the part name for the top contact? the one that has 8 pins. Thanks
nop not really sorry.
+HandalE30 No problem, I found it on eBay for $15 and $3 for the bayonet. "FPC flex connector"
Perfect! I was able to fix my 18-55 lens because of this video. But at 3:00 I was trying to remove the screw, I accidentally pulled it too much then the wire was cut. What is that for anyway? I just ignored it and after putting it all back together, the lens work perfectly.
