The performance is from a 2010 episode of a BBC show called Songwriters' Circle. Richard is joined by his fellow writer/performers Suzanne Vega and Loudon Wainwright III.
So glad you're reacting to Richard Thompson...brilliant singer/songwriter and guitarist..so many good songs to choose from...Please react to Shoot Out the Lights from the show Spectacle..
Richard is likely my favourite songwriter and guitarist with a strong voice that suits his often-sardonic material. Everyone who has has ever compiled a top-10 (or 25 or 50 or 100) best-guitarists list and not included Richard is on my ****list. He's devastating plugged in and, as you can tell here, is mesmerizing with an acoustic guitar. Every time I watch a clip from this particular songwriters' circle I'm struck by the reaction of the other two on stage. I imagine they're torn between awed by his playing and songwriting while simultaneously dreading how they have to follow one of his utterly brilliant performances.
Thank you for playing this, Jess (it was my request)! I’m happy that you loved and were blown away by his guitar playing. I’ve watched this video many times and I always find something new in his playing that I didn’t notice before. Super stoked you enjoyed it!
RT is my favorite musician. It is always fun to see someone discover him. His career has spanned around 55 years now and he is still putting out vital exciting music. He is a fantastic songwriter and is other-worldly on electric guitar. He is a founding member of Fairport Convention a legendary English band who basically invented the English folk-rock genre. He has become a very good vocalist over time and has many great solo songs like this one. He also has a ton of classic songs recorded with two all time great singers; the wonderful Sandy Denny (in Fairport Convention mostly) and his then wife, Linda Thompson. I think you would really enjoy diving into the rabbit hole of his catalog.
Great song and I remember this tour, it was called Rich and Loud because it was Richard Thompson + Loudon Wainwright III. They played the Kate Hepburn theater in Old Saybrook, small venue, and by time I found out it was sold out. Probably 10-12 years ago. Richard Thompson is tremendous on acoustic or electric guitar and has been making music since the late '60s w Fairport Convention. Try "Cooksferry Queen" from his Mock Tudor LP.
Richard is a brilliant guitarist, both acoustic and electric and an amazing songwriter. He has excelled from his founding of the Folk rock group Fairport Convention in 1967, through time as a duo with his ex-wife Linda and his extensive solo career up to the present time. All of this has seen Thompson produce 69 studio, live, movie soundtrack and compilation albums, with the most recent "Ship To Shore" released earlier this year.
Let's not forget that he's playing next to two outstanding songwriters: Loudon Wainwright and Suzanne Vega, who are both mesmerised by his lyrical mastery and musical virtuousity.
Richard is a top notch guitarist and songwriter. Really got started with the British Folk-Rock band, Fairport Convention. He left and did a series of wonderful albums with his now ex-wife, Linda. For the past many years, he has been a solo act, with many outstanding albums to his credit.
Cool to see you check out Richard Thompson, he's been making great records since the late 60s. If you want to try another of his, try Beeswing - and prepare to be swept up in his storytelling, it's a masterpiece.
Brilliant, Nijmegen (the Netherlands), late 1990s, all sitting on the floor (because he told us to :) and he telling jokes. Just grand. Such a beautiful song.
I liked before you even started, a thank you for reacting to this awesome song. He's a deep rabbit hole!! You're awesome too!! 😍 🌹 Jess, another one to check out is "Persuation" with his son Teddy. The live version please. I sub for you way back when you started your channel. Richard has a lot of history, well worth checking out. You are the first reactor I've seen check him out!!! "Poly rhythms" you're my hero!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
An absolutely phenomenal guitarist and songwriter. I’ve seen him several times, both solo acoustic and in a band on electric guitar. Founding member of the seminal folk rock band Fairport Convention, then solo and as a duo with his wife Linda throughout the 70s (until their divorce in 83), and solo ever since. The man is incapable of writing a dud song, and his guitar playing is, as you saw, outstanding. Still touring and recording. Check out some Richard & Linda Thompson, such as Dimming of the Day and Shoot Out the Lights, as well as other solo work like Beeswing.
Richard is a legend, Rolling Stone lists him in the Top 20 Guitarists Of All Time. I haven't seen this performance of the song, it took me a little while to realise that that was Suzanne Vega on stage with him!
Hi, AO! Thanks for that one and thanks to dignan4. Since you were so captivated by the guitar I could not help thinking you would love Mike Dawes version of Everlong (Official Music Video). I'm old and have heard many guitarists but no one like this. Now I have to go hear it again for the 100th time. It's like waving a lollipop in front of a chubby marmot. Anyway, if it's too cheeky of me to ask for a reaction then check it out for yourself. 🎸💗
Musical virtuosity and heartbreaking emotion rarely go hand in hand. RT is one of the very few exceptions. (And both Wainwright and that lady-whoever-she-is on the stage next to him are looking so jealous they're about to crumble.)
pretty sure that the guy on the stage with him is Doc Watson, who could tickle the strings pretty good himself. I'd have loved to see these 2 play together.

Richard Thompson is a World Heritage Site on his own. Brilliant songwriter and guitarist.
Saw Thompson once . . . him, his acoustic guitar, and a wonderful sense of humor.
RT can rock it when he wants to! Try "Cooksferry Queen" or "Tear Stained Letter" for another side of Richard Thompson!

Susan Vega is holding her guitar and saying to herself " Jesus, I have to follow that"
Love this song. ❤
You did a wonderful job with your reaction.
Great song, amazing perf, sweet reactions.

British legend. Loudon Wainwright sharing the stage, Enjoyed your reaction.
London Wai Wright is US not British.
@@billmavin6203 You missed the full stop. "british Legend refers to Richard Thompson.

That's Suzanne Vega
Nice one.

It's Loudon Wainwright.
Legendary guitarist, writer, singer, he should be some much more recognised than he is.
Although every guitarist know exactly who he is!
You might like John Martyn, another British singer/guitarist/songwriter with an electic style -
The band Red Molly took their name from this song
Remind me a lot of mark knofler
He just started out 10 years earlier. Both great English folk rock Guitar players and songwriters.
Hoping you react to more Richard Thompson. Here’s a good one: ua-cam.com/video/HApy-Xoix-g/v-deo.html
If you're not catching the story, what was the point of listening?
i mean, he could have been singing absolute giberish and his guitar playing and voice would have still been very enjoyable, don't you think?
