Daniel, Richard Thompson is probably one of the most talented singers/songwriters/guitarists that sadly most people (especially in the US) have never heard of. He combines guitar playing comparable to Clapton, songwriting/storytelling skills similar to Neil Young or Mark Knopfler and vocals in a class with James Taylor or Steve Winwood . Add some dry British humor like Benny Hill and you have a great performer whether he is on acoustic or electric guitars, solo or with a band. Anything from Rumor and Sigh is great as well as his Shoot Out The Lights album with his then wife Linda (Peters). His stuff with Fairport Convention is also worth of checking out if you want to hear real English folk music. He has 22 studio albums and most are really good, if not exceptional. He is a great performer live in case you ever get a chance to see one of his concerts.

Seeing Richard play this complex guitar part solo while singing is an awesome experience. Really his entire career is worth a listen. He was a founding member of Fairport Convention when he was 17; notably he played guitar on Nick Drake's albums; his work with his ex-wife, Linda, was brilliant, and his solo work after they broke up (like this) was great. However, the song is inaccurate to a small extent: A Vincent Black Lightning doesn't have keys. I agree with the suggestion that you cover Beeswing, but also go back to his earlier work like Shoot Out the Lights or Dimming of the Day.

My Richard Thompson fandom began with buying "Rumor and Sigh" on cassette back in 1991. He has all sorts of connections to British folk/folk-rock, including playing on Nick Drake's first album. You could pick any song off "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" or "Shoot Out the Lights" and not go wrong (including both of those title tracks). His song "Meet on the Ledge", written for Fairport Convention when he was 19 or 20, was covered by Greta Van Fleet a few years ago. And "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" was a big bluegrass hit for the Del McCoury Band in the 2000s.

Richard is an excellent guitar player. Not flashy or much of a showman, just hot licks, as you can hear in this. He is also an excellent songwriter. He got his start with the English folk-rock band, Fairport Convention.
Fairport also gave rise to one of the most beautiful voices, singer, Sandy Denny. Who Knows Where the Time Goes is classic. For electric RT, try Calvery Cross. A Great Reaction.
Love the way you paused the song to say that you disagree with it being dark, just as it’s actually about to get very dark. The shock in your face about the shotgun blast and the genuinely crestfallen look on your face as he lay dying but smiled to see her cry then gave her his beloved bike .
Richard Thompson one of UK’s finest songwriters. Sadly hardly anyone from the US has heard of. Although I have heard many cover versions of this song, some great, some not so great, some done in an American folky style with lyrics changed to appeal to an American audience. box hill changed to Knoxville , Nashville etc. and one of the other bikes changed to ‘Harley’s’ (Sacrilege)
Lots of his songs have an Irish feel and sound to them but he is in fact English with some Scottish blood but as far as I m aware, no Irish
I would love to see you do a reaction to another of his finest classics ‘Beeswing’ His stuff with Fairport Convention well worth a listen too. Keep up the good work

Your fans have led you to some extraordinary music that is often in the realm of artists that either “you get it or you don’t”.Todd Rundgren, NIN , Glen Campbell singing Jim Webb and Richard Thompson make music that isn’t always immediately available on the first listen. Thompson is an active composer, musician And performer. The form of the song is in a traditional “murder ballad” format. There were many songs in the folk catalogue of the UK. Thompson has written many in his career. Shoot Out The Lights, The Wall Of Death are some of the best. Virtually all of what seems like picking is often almost exclusively hammered on the fretboard. Watch Richard Thompson Live on Austin City Limits and you will be gobsmacked at what is happening on that guitar.

E Nowbodhi has pointed out that this is not a traditional song - in fact here on this side of the pond there are a couple of things which tend to be regarded as requirements for the “traditional” label. First, they should be very old (“Vincent Black Lightning” dates from 1990/1) & secondly the writer/composer should be the hugely prolific “anon” (ie, “anonymous”). Richard’s first group, Fairport Convention, did muddy the waters for a lot of people by recording an album (Liege & Lief, in 1969) comprising traditional songs they “rocked up” and new compositions which they arranged in such a way they could be mistaken for traditional……..confused? A lot of people were!

Richard Thompson is my nominee for most under-rated and most under-appreciated singer/musician out there. He has a vast library of nothing but great songs. His vocal style is very distinct and takes a bit of getting used to. More importantly, he's a fabulous guitarist . . . maybe the best. On this song you hear him, and only him, playing acoustic as only he can. But you need to give a listen to some of his electric work. He's unbelievable. His solos are works of art. The always surprise. You never know what's around the next sonic corner. I recommend "Tear Stained Letter", electric band version. You've never heard solos like he fires off on it. You've only experienced the tip of the RT iceberg, Daniel.

Just saw this drop, and although I can't listen right now I am PSYCHED with anticipation! This is a brilliant piece of storytelling and solo acoustic guitar wizardry!
EDIT: Okay; I got to watch and am glad you enjoyed it. As others have said, seeing him perform this live is a joy. Thompson is a fantastic songwriter and performer, who was already an "old soul" when he co-founded Fairport Convention at (I believe) age 17. His guitar style (and you MUST hear him on electric!) is unique among his contemporaries in that it's not Blues-based; rather it harkens back to medieval times. I concur with recommendations of "Beeswing", "Shoot Out The Lights", "Wall Of Death" and others mentioned, adding "Tear-Stained Letter" and "Al Bowlly's In Heaven" from his solo work and a couple with Linda that are stunningly beautiful - "The Great Valerio" and "Walking On A Wire". Oh, and from his Fairport days: you like story-songs, so check out "Matty Groves" and "A Sailor's Life", both of which showcase Richard's electric guitar style and throw in Sandy Denny's vocals as a bonus.

Richard Thompson is the musicians musician so to speak. Not as well known as say a Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jeff Beck to the masses but highly respected among his peers.
He didnt really have many (any?) hits? But has a distinctive style that harkens back to an old old medieval type sound. A Scott. And his musical roots reflect this.
I could listen to this song 100 times and never tire of it. I prefer this live version. It is magical. Also you can really get a sense of just how great a guitarist he is.

So much to recommend from Richard Thompson Turning of the tide, Sights and Sound of London Town. A heart needs a home. He is a much admired guitarist and songwriter and has a catalogue of songs.

It's amazing that whenever someone writes an acoustic song some bright spark will claim it's a traditional Irish folk song.

Man, you've been doing some great stuff lately, this is such a great song. Thompson has had an interesting career, is a great guitarist, great songwriter, and has made some great stuff over the years.

2 of the greatest songs ever written and you have misinterpreted them. This song, which was written by Thompson and is the greatest love song of all time. The other was your reaction of Any Major Dude by Steely Dan. This was the most feel good song ever by Steely Dan. The major dude is comforting a friend in a time of need. You somehow construed this to be a negative song.

You're probably not going to see this, but . . .as a guitarist, Richard Thompson is the guitarist I most wish I could be -- I wish I had his skills and ability and repertoire more than any other guitarist, and any runner-up wouldn't be close. I won't say he's the best acoustic guitarist I've ever heard, and I won't say he's the best electric guitarist I've ever heard. But he's *among* the best at seemingly everything, and can seemingly play anything. And his voice just gets better every year.
Incidentally, his live performances of this song are far better than the studio recording -- even more elaborate and impressive and emotional. I saw him 10 years ago at the 9:30 Club in DC; NPR was there too and simulcast the show, so it's out there to be heard. His performance of this song at that show was one of the best things I've ever heard.
If you want to hear his electric playing, try a live recording of "Calvary Cross" or "Can't Win" or "Hard On Me" or "Night Comes In". If you want more acoustic, try a live recording of "Beeswing".
Incidentally, this song is not a cover of a traditional folk song. I don't know where that came from, but it's wrong.
