I remember watching this film with my Father as a 17 year old my I remember the looks on the Physicians faces who were defendents. I will never forget Paul Newman's reaction to Milo Oshea.

My favorite legal movie - corrupt judge, downtrodden but good lawyer, negligent doctor, crooked defense attorney - nice plot - has it all

If a film has Newman in it, it's worth watching, in this case, the whole film is worth watching.

Joe Seneca as Dr. Thompson. Superb.

It might be Paul Newman’s greatest performance. It’s up there with Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, and Nobody’s Fool. James Mason and Jack Warden were scene stealers though.

I begged a lawyer friend who refused to watch this film. We watched. He was transfixed. So much so when I asked a very brief question, I was vehemently shushed. With the credits rolling he gushed, "This was very good. The leads were realistic and the story was excellent. I was completely drawn in." Me the actor, nodded.

user-pv9rl4ql3i Lol. Having worked for attorneys for years, the way that insurance defense attorneys operate is "if your side lacks evidence, you dazzle 'em with b.s." It is every defense attorney's sworn duty to give their client their best effort, whether they be on the socially correct side or not. Thus, the attorney, as morally dubious as his tactic was, was doing his job. Bear in mind though, this would not work today as the plaintiff attorney would be quick to counter EXCEPT that this was set in Boston..and as everyone found out from the OJ trial..venues matter.

@@IMeMineWho James Mason versus Paul Newman? Regardless. Don't forget Charlotte Rampling and Jack Warden.
All excellent actors. Mason was condescending. People have the ability to understand what they can't express in words.

@@steved8053 It was not just what was not understood with words, but the reason Newman won was that old saying "you cannot unring a bell." Something that S. King also used in his classic The Dead zone" (another great imho.)

Mason was perfect as the arrogant smug lawyer in a bow tie. You can't help but hate his character. I was 21 when this movie was released and I will never wear a bow tie except if I wear a tuxedo.

I've been a lawyer for 35 years. Been in front of many judges. Some have been real SOB's trying to shape the outcome but that's rare. This is just a movie. So was Caddyshack and I loved the scene Judge Smails took one for the team after AL Czervik teed off. "FORE! I should have yelled 2!"
