Ross Fairgrieve of rossfairgrieve.com shows you how to fix jerky GoPro footage to give you nice smooth playback on your computer.
This process uses the excellent (and free!) MPEG Streamclip to convert GoPro video footage from it's native codec, to a more easily workable codec such as Apple Prores 422. - Навчання та стиль
thankyou for an extremely informative tutorial. The sleeping bag analogy is the best I have heard and am now adopting it as my own henceforth. Thanks and best wishes from Cape Town

Excellent video Ross, many thanks. I'm a GoPro newbiw so really appreciate this info
Nicely explained thank you so much.
You have literally saved my gopro experience from turning to absolute pure hatred for technology. Thank you so damn much for putting the time and effort into making this video and helping all of us less intelligent people :P
Thank you for the great video. I followed all of your steps to convert my video on a PC using the Avid DNxHD setting, but the video playback in Quicktime is still choppy. Any suggestions? Thanks
I've downloaded the software MPEG streamclip, but it doesn't have the 422 conversion.
Can you help?!
Thank you good information well presented..
Same thing here, scared to start something that is in a poor format, will wait. Great videos thanks
Keep them coming, a follower....
THANKYOU SO MUCH. This really helped
Thanks for the video, I got everything working after I downloaded the Apple DnXHD codec. I selected my go pro file, followed all your settings, let the software do its thing. The good news is the video now plays nice and smooth on my Mac laptop where before it was jerky and stuttered. But, the video footage is playing back half speed for some reason. The audio no longer matches up to the video either. Any advice? Thanks
Wow, you are the MAN! This worked for me perfectly
Great vid. Thank you
After converting as described, can the footage then be loaded into GoPro Studio and be a usable format? Thanks for the great video.
Didn't work for me...! Clip is still laggy! Help?
thank you! i just followed what u said on this video and i could see my gopro videos perfectly.
Great! Very Helpful! Thank you!
just downloaded streamclip 1.2 i cant see the format you used in your video what other format can i use ?
I don't have the apple proress or whatever it is called as an option??
Awesome! it didnt work that great the first couple of times in till I noticed a check box for interlaced video. Since gopro is progresive I un checked that box and now the video is freaking awesome. Thank you so very much.
I am one that needed that missing prores thanks for that as well.
I find your video interesting and it was helpful though i have not tried it yet. I Bought a Canon 200D after recording and uploading work on my pc, it because a problem to watch and edit the video.
I already thought of Buying new memory card thinking it was virus, later i suspect the PC thinking it mot powerful enough, i because confused and fed up. I just thought of coming to UA-cam and search for any help then i find your video. THANKS a lot. Apart from using converter on the PC is there any way to set the resolution from the Canon to reduced the MB it consumed and still have good quality video?.
Hello Ross this is the first time my mac which has upgraded Ram has struggled to play my footage is this because I’m now shooting in 4K? And once when I put my footage into PR and render will this solve?
Very good work example. Thank you.
I am struggeling. I have no problem watching the movies they are great but as soon I add them to Gopro Quick for windows the video is lagging not working and the program itself says not responding and video jump but sound work. Is there a problem with the quick for computers, or what editing software do you recommend thanks.
hi man,
i download a a pertain program but anyway i can't find the Apple ProRes 422 in Compression option on MPEG Streamclip program.
How i can find it and use it?
Thank you
Very helpful. Thanks!
thank you!!! So much better.
Cool video thank you for the info
Any tips for uploading to youtube, so you get the 1080p option ?
MPEG streamclip squared 5 says it is unavailable to open do to sever identity. Do you know any way around that?
YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER! Great video thank you very much.
Hi , I'm having this issue now .
I'm using a GoPro and trying to edit on Adobe premiere elements 15, and the video playback is very laggy .
I'm currently using Windows ( changing to Mac soon as ) which setting would you suggest I use to decompress ?
Thank you in advance :)
This worked great. I still wasnt able to get the pro res option even after visiting and downloading from the link you had attached but i experimented with other formats and they play back smoothly. Thanks
Hey, my issue is a bit similar to this but I’m using an iPad Pro (don’t own a computer) if I watch the video on my sd card it’s perfect, but after putting it on my hard drive that’s when it’s choppy. Any ideas?
great tutorial but having downloaded the mpeg streamclip for windows there is no pro res options in the compression list?
thanks bro, super helpful
I recently purchased a Sony AX53 and it has an issue with stutter during pans. Can this be fixed on Adobe Premiere Pro CS6? If so, which tool should I use? Thanks
Hi, the compression file you chose doesn't appear on my options could you please tell me a different one to pick, windows 10.thank you
Jeah mate, what do you recommend for windows users?
Campbell Conte 1 month ago
Even if i am using a Microsoft system, would i still use thr Appel ProRes option?
Using mpeg stream clip on windows 10 , please how to select GoPro videos to decompress? In your video you use “add files” then you select and have “go to” but when I try I only get “open” after setting and nothing happens! Any help?
Sweet video. I was wondering if this also works if my videos are saved on apples photos app? Thanks.
Hi, I downloaded the file you put in the descrption but still didn't get Pro-Res but I got various others which one is the equivalent?
I have a very strong computer and I can process 4K/60 video from DJI Mini 2 without any problems and the video is absolutely fluid, but the same resolution from GoPro 9 (so 4K/60) is still laggy.
I record manual, shutter speed 60, 4K/30, 5500K, ISO100 (maximum also 100), Flat color, medium sharpness ....
Video compression has no effect, so the same thing happens no matter what compression I use ...
Can you please give me some advice to solve this problem?
Hi Ross, I have just purchased hantom 3 pro with a 4K camera. Can I do this process in Imovie? Thanks
Thanks for the video!!
Hey thanks for the tutorial, the only problem is that, i didnt have the prores so i went and downloaded the other one, but now when i change it, my video file gets changed into a audio and theres nothing i can do about it, plz help, thanks again.
Please tell me you can help me. I have a Fujifilm camera not gopro but here's the thing. It plays smooth on the camera but when I play it on my computer using VLC it is crap same with editing it. I haven't posted in awhile and I really need to by Monday. so can you help please
Hey ross I don't have the Apple pro codec you used, is their another alternative. Thanks
brilliant fix boss..thanks a million❤️
does this method still work?
yeah buddy..it worked for me..since mine was windows i had to get the other codec nd it just worked
This helps a lot.. Thanks for the info.
Hi, thank you, the playback is better. but it is still a little bit jerky. any other advice?
RossFairgrieveDotCom i have done what you said for windows with avid. but it wont open in the studio. any ideas why this is happening?
I have a windows 8, but I do not have the compression option that you have. (Apple Pres) What do you recommend using?
Even if i am using a Microsoft system, would i still use thr Appel ProRes option?
it looks like this process drops the video resolution from the original to 1920-1080 looks like this could all be skipped if I shot in 1080 to begin with what do I lose if I am converting a GoPro 2.7K/60fps?
you sir are a Legend!!! :D Thankyou!!
None of us have Prores Compression. CAn u please tell us either WHERE to add it OR WHAT ELSE to use from the drop down compression options?
Thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH you really helped out!!!
Interesting Video!! I downloaded the stream clip you suggested - it's version 1.9.2 - BUT the video formats to convert to are different from those you show in your video. I took a stab in the dark and selected 'apple video', hoping it would be a reasonable option - but it grew the file sizes of my video by 30X. 30M --> 900M. But, the video did stop jumping! So it worked ... which is cool. BUT is there something a little 'lesser' in term of decompression you could suggest? I just wanna make youtube vids with some simple go pro footage.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your Great Vid!!
I've downloaded the apple prores and the Avid DNxHD. Still, both won't show in the Compression. What should I do??
Good Vid!
Hi. I have the GoPro Hero8 and downlaoded StreamClip. When importing my GoPro video it says "Unknown File" - any suggestions?
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Please tell us which Codec to use on the Windows version of streamclip as those Apple ones are not available.
Did you get an answer somewhere? I have windows also
I know my footage lags cause I'm on a sub par PC. Guts are okay, but they're not that of a MAC. When I put the footage on a MAC and play it, it's smooth. No lag. Wondering why you would need this, when you have the MAC? why would it lag? Also, is there no quality loss from converting?
Can anyone help this girl out? Isn’t FCP 10.2.3 capable of converting gopro clips on its own? I filmed in 1080 120fps wide today on my gopro hero 5 Black. Plopped into my FCP timeline, set at automatic speed (project is 29.97 fps). It looks HORRIBLE. Like frames are completely missing! Choppy and not smooth at all 😢 any ideas? All has rendered. Gopro software updated. My gopro hero 3 looked way smoother in 720 120 fps... thx for any help you can offer!
What if the raw file is smooth but after cutting in movie maker or after uploading to youtube it starts to get jerky?
i downloaded the other codec and it made it better but my sound is way off. what do i do?
Perfect! Again, used on our GoPro3 Black Edition. Worked perfectly! Subscribed :-D
Thanks you so much for this tutorial, worked perfectly for my HP with Windows 7, thanks again!
BayouBassKing - what file format did you use to save the file in Windows?
Rocky6able I can’t recall unfortunately, that was over 5 years ago. Sorry :/
for some reason i can't find the memory card on the macbook? so i can't even load up the videos. I can get the videos up on photos but everytime i try and transfer it to the hardrive it just says error
Great tutorial, cheers ;)
i wasn't given the compression file option shown here. what should I use?
Hi Ross, a much clearer explanation than most! Simple question - I can't download Streamclip because "Adobe Reader could not open file MPEG_Streamclip_1.2.zip because it is either not a supported file or it has been damaged..." Also, every time I write G*P*** my PC freezes. Every time. Any thoughts? Regards. Tony Matthews
Does it work for 4K?
great video ! XD i did what you said in your video and now i can finally watch back some of my footage with no problem, . the size of the videos is a tad big but like you said hard drives are getting really cheap ;D ! i dont have as many rendering settings like yourself but the h.264 done the job with no problems XD ! thank you again ross #Subscribed
So if u change resalution will it skip less
i can finally use my go pro. i downloaded the application like you said and dnxhd works great on my 2010mac. thank you again
Can MPEG Streamclip automatically correct jerky videos after downloading them from UA-cam?
Hi Ross, great tutorial - thanks.
If I have recorded on a GoPro Hero3 at 50fps when I export to UA-cam at say 23.97 frames per second, does that create an image quality problem at all?
