      Hi VidProMom, I loved your video and it was very informational, it was a video I have definitely been looking for. I do have a Hero6 that I record my kid's sports with but I don't have compatibility with my computer for H.265, and this is where my question comes in. I understand using the Handbrake conversion dropping from H.265 to H.264. Are you able to use that same video you recorded in H.265 down to H.264 with Handbrake, then say years down the road when you have the compatibility, to change it back to H.265 again? I hope this makes sense, thanks

    Thank you so much for this! I have just spent a few hours in hot rage over this... I cannot believe how many people recommend the Hero6 for shooting in 4K/60 but not one frickin' peep about the fact that in all likelihood none of your devices and operating systems and software will allow you to view or edit it!? Guess I'm still hot.
    My point is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this.

      This. I think most of us don’t find out til we shoot that first video in 4K 60fps and then try to edit or play it. Then ya start the frantic search as to WTF?!?

    • @JustWasted3HoursHere
      @JustWasted3HoursHere 5 років тому +1

      Another thing to keep in mind is that if you want to EDIT 4k60 footage, you'd better have a pretty powerful PC if you want to keep from pulling all of the your hair out... (If not, let your editing program make "proxy" or "shadow" files of your footage so that at least you can do the editing itself at a reasonable pace, then let the machine run over night when you do the final output.)

      I tried to avoid buying a GoPro because of their outrageous prices for the camera and accessories. But it was the only action camera I could find that allowed for an external mic. Changing to H265 for no apparent reason really pissed me off.

    I got my Hero 6 because I wanted to (among other things) be able to shoot things for slow motion effects, by importing the 240 fps 1080p file as a 30 fps file (making it play 8 times slower). It works quite good!

    • @Showmedamunny

    I am using a Mac and I believe there was an update to HandBrake and the default menu has a "Preset" scroll down tab, and the default is set 1080p60. If you're recording in 4k and want to view your videos in the highest definition possible, I recommend selecting the "Preset" scroll down tab, clicking on "Web", and choosing the "Vimeo UA-cam HQ 2160p 4K" option. Let me know if there's a better alternative. Thanks for your video!

  • @motorman857

    I saw a setting on the hero 7 that says h264. Won't this setting allow any computer to view Hero 7 footage? That'd be a lot easier than going with that handbrake nightmare.

    • @imagesinla8575
      @imagesinla8575 5 років тому

      Are you sure that setting doesn't say H.264 + HEVC? That's what mine has, and it doesn't allow normal playback on my machine. Though iMovie converts the files, I'm just not sure if Handbrake does a better job of converting because I haven't tried it.

    • @motorman857
      @motorman857 5 років тому +1

      @@imagesinla8575 You are right. It says H264 HEVC. I've found that if I save the footage from the Hero 7 to a folder, THEN, load it to Movavi, it will work. Why I can't download directly from the Hero 7 to Movavi, I still can't figure out. I have 2 SJCam's that lets me download to the computer then to Movavi, without first saving to a folder.

      Same here. I have to download to a folder first, then load it to iMovie, and that works. Hi Meredith, I'm using a Sandisk Extreme Plus but it seems like anything being filmed in HEVC won't do continuous capture beyond like 10-11 minutes, but 1080p can still go for hours. Granted the SD card is a little bit old, but is there something I need to do to make sure I get an SD card that's for sure going to continuously record 4k/60? I'm using a hero 8.

    My computer, windows 10 won’t play the video but will play sound from the video. So. What I personally do is, keep it clean. Transfer each video from the GoPro to the computer in a separate folder. Then I edit on shotcut, shotcut will play and allow me to edit the video. Then when I’m ready to export it from shotcut, i make it 1080p 60fps.
    I can’t believe they did this. Though. Making it so hard haha.

But if I attach my OLD phone to it via cable and try to play the files it plays at about 1 frame every 2 seconds.... hmm - got to throw in a note.. You are suggesting converting from one lossy format (byt this is what is used for recording, so nothing to do about the source) - to another lossy (quite a lot is lost when using h264)!! Not the best way to treat those good looking video files.. Rather convert from h265 to something lossless (requires A LOT of space on your drive), or to a low compress intermediate format like ProRes or DNxHR... It makes a world of difference!

    Hi Meredith. I have an H6 and angsting over the whole HEVC issue. Decided to bypass by limiting my shoot to 2.7K fps 60 per the chart, thank you. My next issue is determining what I ned to do to my macbook pro to get palyback that is not hesitant.
    Any thoughts?

      Install more RAM :) Playback is skippy for me too at that resolution and frame rate. I have 8 GB of RAM... 16 would be better. 32 would be amazing!

    My 2016 Macbook Pro with Mac OSX Mojave can’t find my Gopro 6. I open the Gopro Quik and it finds the camera but the storage isn’t there. Image Capture the same. The videos work on my phone and the camera, but can’t get it on my computer to edit.. just bought both the Macbook and the Gopro.. what a bummer.

    Still having trouble even with an updated computer and all the codecs you can think of. I captured my engagement on the gopro and it won't load. Everything is showing as a red x. Any other ideas?

    I got heaps of footage that needs to be converted. Is there a faster way I could convert all of these footage? It's taking forever to convert one 10 seconds footage. :(
    cheers for the video btw

    Why convert to H264 from Hero 6 when you are better off with the Hero 5? I bought the hero 6 for H265, doesn't make sense to convert.

    Thank you so much for the information. Quick question if I return the hero 6 and shoot 4k with the hero 5 black will I have the same problem with the lagging playback of the videos?? Just seems like a lot of work to always have to convert files when shooting 4k. Thanks

    • @meredithmarsh
      @meredithmarsh  6 років тому

      The lagging playback of videos may not be due to fact that it's HEVC footage, it might be your computer. So 4K from a Hero 5 might result in the same thing.
