I just learned who Alan Merrill was yesterday, when a friend of mine who was friends with him posted about his death from coronavirus. "Walk Away Renee" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and this cover is magnificent. I saw The Left Banke perform this live at Littlefield's in Brooklyn on July 21, 2011, right after my mom's funeral. It was the most comforting thing that could have happened for me. I read that Alan was born 4 days after me, on Feb. 19, 1951, and went to Taft HS where my father went to school. He must have lived near me. I grew up on Pelham Parkway and went to Bronx Science, but hung out on the Parkway with hundreds of other kids, so our paths might have crossed. What a loss and so sad. Never knew he wrote one of the greatest songs of all time.
I have known Alan's music growing up through a couple of my elder sisters and my godmother who have been big fans since the 70s (I was born in 1991, so I missed it all the first time around). He was always better known in Europe and Asia than his native US. He wrote and recorded so many beautiful songs with that unique voice. What a shame that his best known one is for Joan Jett's second-rate cover (thanks to differences with his band's record company at the time meaning that it didn't plug the original version to major radio stations so they didn't play it) and that it isn't even near the best of his songs. I agree, what a loss.
walk Away Renée" is a song written by Michael Brown, Bob Calilli, and Tony Sansone for the band the Left Banke, released as a single in July 1966. Steve Martin Caro is featured on lead vocals. It spent 13 weeks on the US charts, with a top spot of No. 5.[2] The song has been widely considered a quintessence of the baroque pop genre.[3] As musici wikipedia
As a teen growing up in New York City in the 60's, 13 in 1965, you really captured the look and feel of New York back then. I left NY in the late 70s and never came back- had no desire too but growing up in NY in the 60s was the best and most meaningful time of my life. You really captured the essence of that time and place in this amazing animation. Alan Merrill's performance here of "Walk Away Renee", one of my favorite songs of all-time, is great.
Alan Merrill auditioned for the Left Banke when he was 17 years old. He passed the audition but ultimately after about a month of deliberation the band didn't want to add a new guitar player deciding instead to go on as a three piece vocal group with studio musicians augmenting the band for the "Left Banke Too" LP. Alan soon left for Japan in 1968 after that audition experience. He had a great career in the Japanese scene and was the first male signing to Atlantic records there. Not one to waste an effort, he clearly learned the song "Walk Away Renee" long ago and his recent cover of it is terrific in my opinion!
This is a totally A+ Alan Merrill Version of "Walk Away Renee" By The Left Banke ., going to get a copy of - The limited edition CD Rive Gauche.;) Thank you Alan Merrill . Yours in music & peace . Bahama Kin
this is so great :) What a fun video. Having been into Second Life I know what a lot goes into creating all the exclusive scenes and moves for something like this
Although I'll always love The Left Banke's original version, as well as the Frankie Valli disco cover, I really like this version because the vocals are sung in a straightforward manner, hitting the melody line notes right on target, no slides or vocal acrobatics, and the melody line stands out strongly against the harmony and accompaniment. Very nice job.
Great video!!! You did the vid for "She May Call You Up Tonight," yes? That is awesome too! And hilarious. Have you done one for "Pretty Ballerina" or "Love Songs in the Night"? BTW, two of the best lyrics I've ever heard come from this incredible band: "Your name and mine inside a heart upon a wall..." (from this song) and "somewhere a mountain is moving, afraid it's moving without me" (from Pretty Ballerina). It don't get much better! Thanks for your awesome videos!

RIP Alan Merrill March 29, 2020 to COVID-19
Was he one of the Left Banke members?
No, he nearly was, he rehearsed with them for a short while but he left for Japan in 1968.
Why did they break up
Pretty cool......except...what did most of that....uhm..stuff...have to do with the song?
why is this in my recommended video?
Great song, but this video has nothing to do with the song.
Nice version of this favorite.
Lame video.
Not terrible
