  • I take the Whoosh Jet Bottle to a different level in this viewer request episode by burning Nitromethane, I have never seen Nitromethane burned in a whoosh bottle before ever, so I was very curious to see what will happen and it looked amazing.
    I figured since I'm working on so many see-through projects that have to do with nitromethane why not apply it to the whoosh bottle experiment or aka " beating heart " bottle trick.
    Program Guide:
    1st Bottle Burn 1 - 00:41
    1st bottle 2nd burn - 01:29

      Warped Perception yeah he drives a nostalgia F.C. (fuel coupe) in England and the fuel he uses is nitromethane. I’m going over to his house tomorrow so I’ll see if he has time to help me do this. However his car recently had an oil leak (I think) when he was at the quarter mile racetrack so I’m unsure if he’s going to be fixing that this weekend. I’ll see and if he has time I’ll get him to help me. Might post it on UA-cam as well idk 😉

    This is a rudimentary pulse jet. If you had a valve or injector system you could keep the reaction going eventually causing trust. In fact that is something you should try. Maybe even make one with a clear combustion chamber so you can see it all happening.

    • @MushVPeets
      @MushVPeets 6 років тому +1

      Pulse detonation rocket engine, perhaps? :P I've heard the specific impulse of nitromethane is actually not too bad in a traditional rocket engine, and pulse engines are supposed to have a somewhat higher specific impulse...

      Christopher Raff I came here to make that same comment. Maybe run a compressed air line into the fuel chamber to keep the fuel atomized and fresh air coming in. Could be sweet.

    Love how it tries to suck air back in but not quite enough to continue the burning process.
    Kids all around the neighbourhood with R/C Nitro cars will be queuing up asking for a top up to their fuel of the nitro methane, expensive stuff but makes the glow engines go faster.
    You got a new sub and bell ticked.

  • @groomlake51
    @groomlake51 5 років тому +1

    One thing I will add is, it looked like you had 50% nitro. Methanol drastically changes ignition characteristics of Nitromethane. Methanol greatly increases the burn rate of the fuel in a exponential manner. To properly show what I like to say is Nitros extreme resistance to ignition it’s got to be up over 80% some people say it burns slow but I was taught it’s just hard to ignite.

  • @AdamNair

    If I'm not mistaken, this is how a "Pulsejet Engine" works. The main difference between an actual Pulsejet and this is that in a pulsejet, there is a mechanism to feed in fresh air once the air in the bottle is burnt up.

    looks like the fuel is looking for oxygen to burn maybe placing a supply of oxygen via a pipe from outside the opening directly down to about 2 inch off the bottom of the bottle. fuel, heat, oxygen, take one of them away no fire. Your experiments touches on so many aspects of our lives from cooking our food to heating our homes etc. Thanx a bunch for taking a slice of your life to share these awesome moments.

    We used to use 151 in a 7.5 gallon carboy back in the '70's. If you make sure all the sides are well coated, just dump out the alcohol; the vapors will be maintained closer to the walls of the bottle. That way, you'll get a 'ring of fire' move slowly down to the bottom.

    Try again but make the bottle implode. This is more dangerous but will be a great finally.
    To do this put a check valve at the top and the flame will ignite as before but will create a large vacuum
    in the bottle, then will have a great implosion explosion. You will have to make the check value.

    • @WarpedYT
      @WarpedYT  6 років тому +1

      John C o I don't think it will implode, you can probably go full vacuum with this type of bottle IMO. It would need some sort of shunt or shock for it to implode under any degree of vacuum. This bottle is very heavy and very thick.

    I would suggest using water with a handful of calcium carbonate rocks, but that gives of acetylene gas so it might smash the glass on detonation, so don’t. As a kid I did it with a metal bucket with a piece of plywood that almost covered the top and then threw lit matches at the gap. A good one would fire the plywood 2 or 3 meters in the air. Great fun.

    Fire in any form is a fascination to me. I'm kind of a connoisseur, I suppose 😏. Woosh bottles are near and dear to my heart, to get their best performance, you don't want high performance. You want that bottle to do a slow burn, so it sits there and ROARS when you touch it off. You want vapor in there, not an aerosol, so pick that bad boy up and do some swirling action like you're dancing with your best girl. Then set her down and light 'er up! Watch out for your eyebrows, and cross your fingers the jug don't crack.

    Creating the cloud reminds me of Bill Nye creating a cloud from a little smoke and a large pressure change - inside another 5 gallon bottle. It's on UA-cam - was on an Almost Live New Years Eve special or something.

    Pretty kewl video. I wonder what would happen if you were able to supply a secondary stream of air to the large bottle. Would it continue to burn? Take a small tube and run it down into the bottle just above the surface of the alcohol (so that, if it works, the incoming air would stir up the alcohol as it rushes in).

    additions I'd like to see: introducing constant source variable pressure gas inject-possible just hold compressed air nozzle about a foot above the spout at burn time ; and a simultaneous mix of multiple fuels of different weights and viscosity:upshot: would we get a pousse cafe layered effect in simultaneous burn temps? keep on experimenting

    I have a suggestion for this video, if you put an air inlet near the bottom of the bottle right by the fuel or even submerged in the fuel, with a one way value on it so only air can go in, you should be able to to make the burn more consistent until all the fuel in the bottle has been burnt off, it should burnt in the same manor as a pulse jet. I would love to see you do this, I don't think the plastic bottle will be cut out for it though as it will get really hot really quickly.

    Pressurize the alcohol? You didnt pressurize anything. You stirred it around

      He put his hand over it and that pressurized it. When it went clear it was because the higher pressure can dissolve more alcohol.

    • @matman7546

      He actually depressurized it. The fast moving air produced a low pressure area, below the vapour pressure of the alcohol, forcing it to evaporate

      How about replacing the oxygen? Pressurized an open container, holding all that pressure in through an open hole

    I used to do this using a five gallon glass bottle back in the old days. We called it a "Crazy" Bottle back then. We didn't use anything except for alcohol.

    Very nice work, and especially the nice videography. Thumbs up for sure. Twenty years ago when we were doing this, we used nitromethane as well. It is interesting that none of your bottles resonated. We had a couple of brown glass bottles, maybe quart sized, and they would make a nice WHOOOOOOOOOO! We didn't blow in compressed air, so maybe the less perfect mixture made for a longer, slower burn? The best was the five gallon PLASTIC Sparkletts bottle. Since the bottom is flexible, it'll hop around for quite some time before it starts to melt and sag lol.

    You are putting waaay too much liquid in those. You seem to have a “more is better” mentality here which I totally understand lol but there is an optimum amount of everything involved here. Love the nitromethane!!

    Take a 1-quart pickle jar... remove the top, make a 1/2 inch (12mm) hole in the lid. Reassemble. Place on a plate with about 1/8 inch (3mm) of water. (Safety) Then put about a shot-glass full of denatured alcohol into it. Put in a little air... not quite as much as you were doing above... then light. If done properly, it will become a pulse-jet burning for over a minute... or at least until the jar cracks from overheating. You can also do it with a 1-quart paint can... which will become quite hot. The sound is great.

      askjerry Yes I've been meaning to do a pulse jet for a while now but just haven't gotten to it yet, also I thought the cold water on the plate was for cooling the lower portion of air in the bottle to draw in higher velocity of fresh air. Thanks !

    Supposedly, when you take the plastic water jars, they start oscillating, like the on the last jar you lit up.
    That oscillation is way cool!

    Try diluting the nitromethane with methanol or ethanol in a 90/10 ratio. Also instead of rubbing alcohol, try straight methanol or ethanol in smaller amounts and then vaporize it with compressed air. You'll get a better reaction that way. If you go the ethanol (grain alcohol) route, try anything that you can drink that's 100 proof or better being sure that you sample it beforehand, and do the same thing as the other types of alcohol. It works quite well. (not that I would know anything about that)

    I'm shocked the more flamable liquids dont just explode, i knew alchohol made a whoosh but the other ones would be too dangerous for me to dare try🙈 Cool stuff!👍

    • @jm-mi7kl
      @jm-mi7kl 6 років тому

      to explode they have to be confined in a sealed (or almost sealed) container. If there's a big enough vent (e.g. the mouth of the bottle) no bang.

    • @volvo245
      @volvo245 6 років тому

      big enough vent for the flue gasses created yes. Leaner mixes would create flue gasses faster=higher pressure and possible bomb time. Always make sure to have super saturated mix in a whoosh bottle so it wont become a boom bottle.
