- Several weeks ago we put out a tutorial on using MainStage as a vocoder and the response was strong - you guys are super into vocoding!
I wanted to follow up on that video with tips that will really help you dial in an awesome live vocoding sound using only MainStage's built-in plugins and a microphone.
Here's Part 1 in case you've missed it.

I find that turning up "resonance" to its maximum (which is labeled "high") and changing the "mode" to "blend" gives you a more human like and understandable sound if you're going for that (though not as much as adding a pitch corrected vocal channel). Also, I used a noise gate to prevent background sounds from entering the pitch corrected strip and taking away from the on/off digital feel. I love how big this makes the vocals feel especially when you're singing by yourself.
Well done!
Thanks, man!
A shiver just went down my back when I realised I don't need anything other than MainStage to sound cool. 😎 But seriously though, this is good stuff!👌🏻🙏🏻✌🏻
Thanks Jonathan! :)
Wow!!!!! That sounds Awesome!!!
Great vocals too.
Thanks! :)
I just came across your vid today. I’ve used the vocoder for effects only (Bulletproof Citizen Way-You’ve already won me). I never considered it for background vocals. Great idea! I’m gonna try it this Sunday!
Yooo give it a try! The youth will love it. The message is the same, the method is different. Is still part of praise and worship!
Amazing, amazing, amazing... How great... Excelent work! Thanks
Good stuff, man! This is awesome!
Thank you sooo much for this
Thank you very much
Brilliant as ever!! Thank you very very much for all the great and inspiring stuff you are providing over the years, Mr. Ex-Dpfaltsound 😉
Bon Iver worship :)

Sounds amazing! I don't imagine it sounding too jarring and unnatural in the context of a church service either.
So fun! You'll have to let us know if you try it out!
And now I want to race home to play with Mainstage... dang UA-cam making me practice when I want to take a night off.
It's so fun! :)
🔥
Excellent tutorial, you can do mainstage 3 tutorials in Spanish? Blessings from Dominican Republic
We aren't doing any in Spanish at this time, but perhaps in the future! Thank you :)
Sick!!!
Wow. !!!👍👍👍👍
That's so cool, one my song it sound like a choir or backing vocal just need a little more tweeting, are all those plugin are with mainstage or need logic pro ?
This is showing it done with MainStage so you can do it live, but MainStage and Logic share the same plugins.
What song are you using for the demo? This has me stunned!!!
Here As In Heaven by Elevation Worship.
wwowowwwww! this is so cool! thank you for this! I've never done a live performance with tech equipment. im guessing your MacBook is connected to an audio interface, and then you have a speak connected to the audio interface- correct? where is the mic output coming from? sorry for my ignorance!
You can connect instrument cables out the back of the interface to send to a mixer.
Hi, question, do I need an audio interface to been able to use a mic with mainstage? Right now im stuck un that part. Help!!!!
Yes, you do.
I'm using a USB Microphone and it works pretty well. But a regular mic will need an interface for sure.
THANKS .......
You're welcome!
