Why Katz’s Pastrami Is Still King of Sandwiches

- Опубліковано 8 гру 2015
- Professional carnivore Nick Solares looks back at three decades of eating pastrami at Katz Deli on Lower East Side. The neighborhood has changed significantly since he moved to Rivington Street back in the 1980’s but aside from the inevitable price hike, not much else has at Katz’s. Nick reminisces about his first visit and tells us why the pastrami is his favorite.

Its that time of my life again, bing watching Nick Solares content. its time.
Happy to be back
I didn't think he'd be able to work in Spinalis Dorsi in this episode but he did!
"I'm just going to hide it in my mouth" lmao, I died.
I feel old. I remember when a pastrami on rye from Katz was only 1.99$ with soup.
Frank Gee wow, you must be 100 years old, laugh good old days i remember when the detroit news and detroit free press cost 15 cent in the seventies
You are old and we the young are broke. It evens out.
At katz, my old job pastrami cost like 11dollars dollars today, taste super great right out the cooker
When was it 1.99, 1960s
You are old.
That pastrami sandwich from Katz is glorious!!! Love it!
There are many videos from many food bloggers on UA-cam, all talking about Katz. This one from Nick stands out for the fact that he eats this pastrami on rye like no tomorrow. And, of course Nick packed all the points nicely and keep them short. Good Job!
Los Angeles has the best pastrami. Hands down. Langer's, Wexler's, Canter's, Johnnie's. New York can only live off sentiment and former glory for so long.
+Oren Peleg But who the fuck wants to go to LA
+Oren Peleg
HA HA!, the only one you mentioned that has any right to be mentioned in same sentence as Katz's is Langers.
Some cuts are very chewy-had to spit out sadly. If you get good cuts it’s amazing with Dijon mustard.
The last time I went to Katz's I ordered a corned beef sandwich on rye bread. The waiter turned towards the counter and yelled out, " Vun corned beef, Vun". The he ran behind the counter and made it.
Man, I just want to say I love Jewish delicatessans. I have so much sentiment towards them, like hearing how my dad would go to Katz's 40 years ago when he first came to America in NYC, and it wasn't just him it was like that for everyone when coming to America as early as early 1900s; they're such an American staple that I hope doesn't go away.
I feel very fortunate enough to live in Houston, where we have Kenny & Ziggy's, which is the closest thing we'll ever get in Houston. And they definitely have great credentials, since NYC Jewish delicatessen is in the founders' blood.
+Penguin619 How old are you? Do you remember Alfred's? Amazing. Best corned beef I've ever had.
Penguin619 i
i love the lady who could not stop looking at what you were doing
here's the thing, when a lot of Europeans think of American food, they think of McDonalds and fast food chains, whereas real American food is such an amalgamation of so many different cultures, American cuisine is the pastrami sandwiches at Katz's it in the arguements over who has the best barbeque, St. Louis, Kansas City, or Texas! its things like that!
I'd recommend Harry & Ida's, it's literally around the corner. Love that place!
damn! I'm quite the sandwich aficionado...just finished gobbling down a pretty amazing turkey on a bagel, but the descriptions of the pastrami and the close up shots had my mouth watering and craving some!
I remember going to the Stage Delicatessen (RIP) on my first day in NYC and on my 2nd day, I went to Katz. 2 pastrami sandwiches on rye in 2 days.i went back to Katz 3 times that week. I had to get rolled into the plane going back home by the end of the week. But both the stage deli and Katz were very very good.
anyone remeber the stage deli? a great deli with huge pastrami samwhiches in nyc that recently closed :(
Always deliver a solid experience
awesome! the minutia of Katz's Pastrami!
I love the enthusiasm over the best deli. But even my grandma wouldn't compare herself to 2nd Ave Deli
Great history......way over priced food. The pickles were great as well as the egg cream soda. $27 for a freakin pastrami sandwich? Really?
yea, it is expensive. It has become a tourist thing. You do it with a partner on a visit to NYC. I doubt many New Yorkers go there at all or on a regular basis. I went there once, it was great, but I haven't been there in 3 years.
I have tried langers and the pastrami there is amazing, so i cant wait to try katz'd this summer during my trip to new york
How was it?
@@abc-oo5qb it was great. I really wanna go back. However langer had the superior bread, I liked how much more meat I get at Katz’s. Just two different styles of sandwich.
I could not even finish the video without my mouth watering and going nuts just wanting to be there! ARRGGGH! :D :D
I got a tattoo @ Daredevil on Houston street. I was all shaky/in literal shock from 4-5hr tattoo session so I needed to get something to eat. I walked into Katz not knowing anything about it or where I was. Great place
Hershel's in Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia has the best pastrami I've had and I've eaten at Katz's.
5 bucks 30yrs ago? damn its $23 something with tax now, just had one yesterday.
A buddy and I tried both the pastrami and corned beef and we were shocked at how bad they were. I guess we're spoiled in Montreal.
For 20.00 bucks, not me, this sandwich would not sell for more than 5.00 dollars in kentucky. They would go out of business here
Mlm
I can just buy all the material and make hat myself
I always go to Katz's whenever I'm in NY.
Just back from trip to NYC from UK. Both Katz and Carnegie were on the 'must do' list. I got the Pastrami Rueben at Katz and have never tasted anything like it. I'm not qualified to even try to describe or critique it, it was just off the scale.
Unable to face any more Pastrami, I got the Turkey club at the Carnegie the next day. It was very good too. The cheesecake at the Carnegie was incredible however.
Both visits were surprisingly expensive.
The pastrami Reuben at Katz stands along as a singular culinary experience which has to be tried to really understand. Just my opinion.
Langer’s Deli in LA has a better sandwich. The rye bread at Katz is not even close to Langers
I NEED to visit this place.
u will not be disappointed
whats with all the meat?? that's enough for at least 5 sandwiches for fucks sake...
Disgusting
Actually they're $20 a sandwich, and all that meat is sooo good! You don't have to eat it all in one sitting. But it is worth it.
Wait what? The last time I was in NYC they were 15 bucks plus tax.
Instant colon cancer
Man just stfu and buy the sandwich and make 5 sandwiches yourself. The meat is fucking awesome, and that's what you're there for. Actually when I was there last year most people around me were just buying the meat, bread and pickles, all separate, taking it home and preparing it for their families. I was only there for a day visiting my aunt, so I bought the sandwich, which gave me two good meals and a homeless dude one.
Just eat the god damn sandwich
+Ticklish Alpaca Then you'd just be watching a video of a man eating a sandwich...
+Sam Blackburn basically JOEYS SUPER COOL FOOD REVIEWS
It's foreplay.
He's here to explain the restaurant and the sandwich, not to satisfy you with food eating porn.
Ticklish Alpaca hahahahaha exactly what i wanted to say!!!!
Amazing 🤩
Katz's is the real deal...one of the few places that is touristy, yet locals still patronize. I'm in that area all the time, but I only go in every 6 months or so because it is a bit expensive ($17 for pastrami sandwich last time I was in). People are going to bitch and moan about the price, but this is NYC...everything here is expensive...and you can feed two people with one sandwich. Don't tell them you plan on sharing, though...they will charge you extra. Don't get table service (waiter service) at Katz's...and tip the slicers...they will hook you up with extra meat and samples too. Also, for the love of God...DON'T LOSE YOUR TICKET.
i love Katz but has anyone tried David's Hose of Brisket on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn? The pastrami sandwiches are delicious and about 2/3 the price of Katz. I love that Katz is open late but David's is right here in BK..... I would love to see a taste off!
Mimi really basket pastrami its thick like regular cornbeef
Under $5.00, even in whatever year that may have been in.... Unreal... I had one last week. $21.45. How? I can understand you want to take advantage of the situation, but that is completely and utterly insane... $21.45 doesn't even get you a side. It gets you a pastrami sandwich. The working class meal. I went to Minetta Tavern and had an amazing dry aged beef burger for $33. It came with a side of fries, how generous. In Montreal, I had a Schwartz's sandwich for about $8, which is still in my opinion, overpriced for what it is.
Don't get me wrong, Katz's or Schwartz's. You both have unreal, delicious products that will compete with new coming shops for decades (hopefully) to come. But please make it reasonable.
Yours truly,
Fatty Sandwich Lover
J its new york it world famous it depends if it nice looking inside too, ktz has homemade pastrami it dfifferent than buying from a wholesale company pastrami taste alot better when it comes out of the cooker or jusst prepared
J both Montreal and N.Y. are expensive cities you pay for it the cost os probaby the employees, pastrami sandwiches cost over ten dollars for six ounces of pastrami
Cavaet emptor: they treat you like shit in this place. Rude people, horrible wait people.
At Katz's deli, order the pastrami sandwich on rye bread with cole slaw and Russian dressing.
Heaven!
God I miss this sandwich :(
I just eat the pastrami by its self a piece at a time and take bites out of the bread love to do that
Does anyone know how they boil it and keep the rub from washing off ???
It is for me a honor to work at KATZ'S Deli
thank you for bringing the goodness of Katz's to this earth. It is hands down, the best deli in the world.
Ciabatta works even better to corral the pastrami in. Also, am I the only one to try pastrami with mayonnaise? Its so delicious. Best sandwich: pastrami, provolone/mozzarella, mayo on ciabatta
I went to Katz when I was about 13 or 14, can't say I was impressed by the grease pile they served me with some tasteless bread.
aethertech really pastrami is not the same without the good bread
"I was on the way to see a band" GG Alin
Lmao thank you for the laugh buddy
The problem with well known deli places such as this is that yeah the food might be great but don't go there expecting customer service of the highest level....you and hundreds of thousands of other people have seen this place as a recommendation by food experts of nyc...so its going to be hard for the people behind the counter to smile have a chat and ask you how you are whilst there are 15 people behind you waiting to order. If you new Yorkers love your deli meat sandwiches I'm sure you would know of places that serve them just as good elsewhere where many people don't know about its existence. Go support your local businesses who make great food...katz is for tourists now...
No one can bet the Katz pastrami sandwich in this world! You must go In and give a try!
Def gonna try this if i go to ny
love the shirt. NYHC
I never got that excited about my visit. Way overpriced for very ordinary food.
dmfub2348 if that sandwich is only 5 bucks like i think i heard him say thats definitely not overpriced, thst would be cheap 20 years ago let alone today, theres almost 3 inches of meat on that thing
It's 22 bucks for a sandwich
Walter Mut seriously? You could get a pretty decent ribeye, baked potato snd salad at a place i know for that
dmfub2348 pastrami is great food in my old deli they cool down meats with water it ta ke alot of taste of meat katz they pastrami is more scientific made
dmfub2348 its ny city world famous deli nice looking restaurant it hand cut pastrami
I told my wife we live in Delaware I said we need to go to New York and sightsee and go to Katz for one of them famous sandwiches
I went for the hype, but all I got was a 7/10 quality sandwich with a drink for $27 and a server that had a meltdown about my $14 tip. That was a little over 50%. What an egomaniac.
They were unhappy at a 50% tip? I don't understand.
If you want sth reasonably priced and delicious pastrami sandwiches go to the Amish Market on 45th, thought they were way better/nicer there
You gave a 50% tip for a sandwich that you considered only a 7/10? You are part of the problem with the culture of tipping entitlement.
IanElickMusic best pastrami ever is made in the Congo.
50% tip jesus christ... is this normal in America?
that looks delish
Here in Orlando we have Jason's Deli
+Enjoys Anal , We have that in Atlanta. It is a good approximation of what the sandwich should taste like.
Absolutely the best......,.,,
Tourist trap for all the out of towners.
Your a hipster arn't you
Wow delicious pastrami
@@stemcg1983 hipsters never care for the product itself, they just jump on anything that is new and unheard of... as soon as it becomes popular, no matter how good or bad it actually is, they flee...
ikr
been living in nyc since birth and you're wrong. All my friends and i go to katz on the daily. You're probably from Connecticut. Fake ass new yorker.
Say spinalis dorsi one more time mate...
Kemal Ertas lol
Was waiting for him to say "funky"
I've never been as sick to my stomach in my life as after I had a Katz's Deli pastrami sandwich on a trip to New York. I spent most of the rest of the trip in the hotel bathroom throwing up. I must've gotten a really bad batch of it.
Either that or more likely I got crap meat from an overrated tourist trap.
U know how some people get sick from eating the food in another country? U might have gone through that, body is not use to the microbes(atleast that's how some people explain it).
He just plays with his food like a kid
We live on the West Coast but my dad is from NY and when I was a kid we went to visit his family and went to Katz's. I got an egg salad sandwich despite my dad trying to reason with me. I apparently was a very confused young boy. But I vow to some day go back and eat a fuckin pastrami sandwich.
God dammit Nick, now I am craving this so bad. Looks so fucking good!
I'll have mine with a cardiac stent!
I'm seeing a lot of comments about US$20 for this sandwich. Is it worth it? That's a lot in my currency (NZ$30). Are there other places in NY that taste better?
That woman in the beige coat 2 tables down would not mind her own beeswax.
I honestly love Harry and ida's smoked pastrami more than KATZ, although they don't have rye bread which I love, the cucumber krout makes it up.
I don't hate Katz's, but it's just one of several great spots to enjoy Pastrami. Ben's, Juniors, Pastrami Queen, Fine & Schapiro all rate very high.
I guess the quantity of glutamate should be considered whenyou talk about which restaurant is the best
I love how this dude has an English accent and he’s a die hard New Yorker.
He was born in London
I thought it was good but I'm not a pastrami expert. Everyone is talking about Schwartz so I gotta check that out.
Togo's pastrami is the beast.
My hubby eats this with ONE jaw only! :D
I hate it when people say "Not unlike", why can you just say "Like"?
The UA-cam gods have recommended this video once again
The pastrami fries from Leo's are pretty good
They're related to the Katz Deli in Houston, right? Like the poster there says that Barry Katz is the Grandson of the Katz Deli in New York
+Jonathan Daniels I think you answered your own question lol
why are the plates so small?
Is the Murphy's on ur shirt from the Oklahoma one?
i had schwartz's smoked meat during the montreal GP in 2015 and 4 days later had a katz pastrami, and there's no comparison in look or taste. schwartz smoked meat looks and taste more like corned beef than pastrami and it wasn't as juicy as katz pastrami.
i still see people order a katz pastrami the wrong way, don't order a pastrami rueben or add kraut, its like adding steak sauce and mushrooms on a prime steak at peter lugers why would you ever.
order it juicy not fatty or lean. bypass the rye and get it on club bread. also no deli mustard because there's mustard on the tables where you can add as much or as little as you want. its the best sandwich on earth because of the flavor and how juicy a katz pastrami is.
I wanna go to New York soon, is this a good place to go eat Pastrami?
YES!!!!!!
It looks nice...
.Rudest employees + food was nothing special .Deli sandwich $16.95 + Tax
It's like $22 + tax now
23.50 now
vincent lu it's $359.95 now
Jim Wong i used to weork in a deli and my old deli used water to cool down meat that takes alot of the taste out of food
Jim Wong really their pastrami is homemade handcut etc in my old job the u cool down meats with water it take taste out of the meat
This is the guy who inspired me to make pastrami steaksauce steak pastramisteak steak steaksauce parmesan oregano fettucine origami wagyu parma ham beef wellington Gordon Ramsay Gordon Murray Jack Daniels chorizo iberico ham pastrami steaksauce steak
new yorkers rarely eat there. $20 a sandwich is why. tourists flock to Katz's, for good reason.. its is awesome, but i have lived in NYC for 20 years and i have probably been less than 20 times
Good call without the mustard. I know it’s crazy, but have you tried it with mayo? :)
Send me one over as that just looks so yummy
He should of said “ and also i paid 40$ for a sandwich and hotdog “ but they won’t do that this place a food scam 😂
This guys british/ny accent is fucking awesome
Great show, great host. Really enjoying. Subbed.
Schwartz's, the best hands down.
+Patrick Strong You know nothing, Jon Snow.
that is all you have in canada so go for it , but if you want the best jewish deli you go to Katz. no question
Really better than katz deli
Patrick Strong really they have their own pastrami handcut professional prepared
anyone else noticed the lady in the back turning round and staring at the camera?
Australia, the home of the meat pie and good food.
I feel hungry now
They are the best
Very well said, Nick! I'd been eating pastrami sandwiches at various jewish delis since I was a kid, but didn't make it to katz's until my late 20s. Without question the best pastrami sandwich out there, a cut above the rest.
Try Pomperdales in Ft Lauderdale.Way better and way better atmosphere:)
Ha! I'm gong there later today!
this guy has experience as a talking host. most youtube videographers are trying to sell their 'personalities'. this guy, story and subject matter...and then, he starts 'playing with his food'. let that be the key to liking the host...
it really came a long way.............
