    The English Riviera: my old stomping ground. Unfortunately lost all family property in the area and now I and my siblings will never be able to afford to live there. But I dream about it! And I can still hear the sound of the waves and the seagulls, the whistle of the steam train and cries of people on the beach while sunbathing in our back garden. Utter bliss.

    On the one hand, it's touching that Jeff grew up in a council house and is so grateful and thrilled by the possibility of living in a big, gracious home where he can house his entire family and host friends. Clearly, he dreams of being able to open a home that he's proud of and share it with people he loves. On the other hand, his inability - or fear? - when it comes to imagining making improvements shows you how a lack of possibilities in childhood can restrict a person in later life. Also, the sense that 'new' means 'good' - probably because of not having much new when he was growing up. He can imagine living 'how the other half lives,' but he can't imagine having the tools to create such a lifestyle (or inherit it), only to buy it ready-made, brand-new, out of the box - a sign that 'I can afford it'.

    Confused. Sam and Jamie sold Jamie's parents' house, but kept the land and want to be near that land. Why not keep the house and live in it (siblings' claim?) or simply build their own place on the land they kept?

      I’m not sure what happened, but if I were them I’d do the same. I’d sell the house and keep the land. Because they didn’t want to live in the house, and that would be lots of work to maintain it. They also need the cash to live by the sea.

      It sure makes sense to get a house with property that can also accommodate your horses. Traveling to them twice a day forever at a minimum gets old and what if they get sick and need around the clock care? Camp out in your field next to a house you already owned but no longer do?

    I wonder why the young couple didn't just keep the farm. Also, in the US, if you put in an offer, you need to put down some money that you can lose if you back out of the agreed upon deal. It's so weird to hear of all these people, buyers and sellers, who "have a change of heart" weeks and weeks later.

      You put down a deposit that you can back out of if the survey brings up problems, only after this, when the 'exchange' of contracts is done are you committed - it means either party can gazump the offer and it makes the whole 'chain' of purchasing in UK a total horror show.

    How are buyers allowed to just change their minds? Do they lose their deposit? Real estate in Canada is very different. Once you sign you’re on the hook. You can lose your deposit or get sued.

    • @Neji961
      @Neji961 Рік тому +4

      In the UK, anyone, anywhere in the property chain can change their mind at any time with no legal consequences - up until the point where you exchange contracts and you become legally obliged to complete the transaction. The gap between having an offer accepted and exchanging contracts can often be months, leaving a lot of time for people to change minds or things to go wrong! You might lose estate agent fees or solicitors fees, but no one can sue you for changing your mind before contracts are exchanged. If you change your mind after exchange, then yes, someone down the line is going to lose a lot of money 😂

      That happens here in the US as well, however you have 7 days or you lose your Ernest money. Or if the inspector finds major issues with the house you can back out. We do sign a contract when we place the offer so it goes into pending status. So the seller can’t take a offer for a higher price like I have seen on here which is heartbreaking to me
