SMT - When I received my Tyco set back in 1973, it had forms for mail ordering Tyco train items. It had 2 lists of sets; 1 list was for sets with a power pack, the other list was for sets without a power pack. Tyco did offer 2 or 3 different separate - sale power packs at the time; the set pack, a pack with 2 speed controls, & a higher wattage power pack with a single speed control. This allowed the modeler to choose a power pack best suited for his layout. It appears Atlas did subcontract their track to various manufacturers. I think the metal power packs that many manufacturers used in their sets were subcontracted by Model Rectifier Corporation.

Early to mid 60s Tyco set.
Almost identical to my first set 51 or so years ago with key differences being mine was PRR though I had the gondola (B&O) my box car was the Khans reefer car and my operating accessory car was the B&M dumping hopper car but outside of that identical.
Of course dad and gramps couldn't just let it go with a simple circle of track for their then 7 yo ferroequinologist and had a double oval ( no dead end sidings to tempt a junior Gomez Adams) and a complete town and such so I never actually saw how my set looked in the box.

At the time that set was marketed the push was on to take Lionels market so sets came without power pacs in order to entice sales of H.O. trains and take Lionels market. Early H.O.sets were of high quality and a good buy.The problem that arose was the difficulty for small hands put those trains on the track. In the end slot cars came along and the kids loved them and at that time they won.My kids had to have slot cars so Santa gave them slot cars.

Although this video is a couple years old I just have to comment. I recently set up my 60's era Tyco train set I had as a boy and decided to give model railroading a try again after 50 plus years (had to wait for electricity to get invented!). It still runs fine! The F7 could use some lube and the headlight was burnt out but otherwise it still runs like it did over 50 years ago. The two biggest problems I ran into was the brass Atlas track needed cleaning to remove oxidation and a couple of the lightbulbs on the engine and passenger cars needed replacing. Oh, and those old style couplers are a pain to de-couple and need to go.
Your videos have been my go to source for information during this reintroduction to railroading and serve as my inspiration. Keep up the good work!

Great video and brings back many memories! I remember growing up in the late 70s and these Tyco train sets and standalone accessories were really popular and abundant in hobby stores of the time. I used to buy lots, unfortunately we never had a big house so I was never able to set up a full board layout!

i found 3 tyco train sets in my basement a long time ago, there was many different pieces to it that were lost or missing, only one engine and 2 train cars that weren't hurt. i said i found it a long time ago, this was years ago, i just got it out again today to test it again, doesn't work too well. i'm hoping to get some stuff restored, i heard it was owned by a family member of mine many many years ago. i think it's pretty cool to see this stuff, also great video!

I have that Exact Track brass I love it verses the expensive nickel silver. And I had that controller on an old train set when I was like 3 to 4 years old. I remember the locomotive it was a gp . something and santafe locomotive red and silver. Wish I had luck finding stuff like this. Or even find people give away old stuff like this. Anything I see has a major price tag on them.

LOL, 1960s electricity was not invented yet. Most houses had electricity by the 1920s. Back in the late 1890s only the rich had electricity but it was there. Edison made the light bulb around 1880. It is more likely it did not come with a power pack because of costs and weight for shipping.
