- It’s the latest in our series of BMW M Sport drag races! During the past two weeks, we’ve seen the BMW M5 Competition take down the AMG E 63 S, while the E30 M3 was beaten by the Audi RS2. So can the E46 M3 CSL round it off with a win against the RS4 B5? The M3’s automatic with 365hp while the RS4 comes in manual with 381hp… but it does have Quattro all-wheel drive! There’s only one thing left to do… let’s race!

I had a b5 S4 and it was rated at 14 seconds in the quarter. An rs4 should be quite a bit quicker then 14.4 seconds.

I have a B5 S4 stage2+ on E85 and a E46 M3 SMG with CSL software and evolve tune. I think the B5 would beat it of the line.

I remember reading the E46 specs when new... carbon roof? On a bmw?! That was mega back in 04 and launch control was sick not to mention they shaved 100+Kg from a car that wasn’t even heavy. It was and still is incredible.

MM3 funny that as it’s still in the top 10 fastest shifting boxes of the past twenty years.... all you need to do is have the updates done at BMW and they’re rapid shifts and I have both the CSL and a MK7.5 Golf R with DSG which is equally fast

Even when launched properly the M3 would still be faster - M3 CSL 1/4 mile time is 13.0 and RS4 is 13.2 (both cars with good launch)

ferrarieustratios especially as it’s Quattro. It’s not like you have to delicately feather the throttle like you would with a powerful RWD car. Still, as someone else pointed out, the CSL is fractionally quicker anyway with both cars at maximum potential.

Amen to that, the E46 M3, E39 M5, E38 sport, all lovely cars with classic BMW lines and driving characteristics, they were the Ultimate Driving Machines that had everting you needed to make them a true drivers car without all the electronic gadgets and crap you get in the modern ones! BMWs best days are in it’s rear view mirror I’m afraid!

Audi S5 is slightly faster, due to less weight. But the price/performance ratio of the Stinger is much better

@BEARD GANG!! Yes, Kia is a heavy brick compared to the S5. Personally I think it's more of a competitor to the BMW 6 series and the Audi A7 as it also reaches a weight of around 1800-1900kg and about the same size.
@BEARD GANG!! S7... dude, I was talking about 640i or 3.0 TFSI. You can literally buy two Stingers for the price of an S7, and the interior of a Kia is really good for a brand that isn't "premium". The Koreans are on the way up, with the help of a German designer, 5-7 years of warranty and reliability that's equal to Toyotas and Hondas.

Agreed. I did a 14.2 in my stock s4 b5 and I'm a crap driver lol did a 13.6 after a simple stage 1 remap running 310bhp

A tuned b5 s4 is beating this time so the car wasn't running strong or the driver didn't do well.Maybe a mix of both but this isn't accurate.I love the m3 csl it's one of my favorites but nope.

I agree, the BMW e46 M3 CSL is my favourate too. I tuned the standard e46 M3 manual and just sharpened the throttle only, and it was a blast. Awesome car.

The e92 does a bit better on the 1/4 mile according to autobild, auto motor sport and other magazines. Still would be really interesting.
SamTheCar I’m talking about the standard E92. Not the GTS. That’s on better tyres, had shorter gear ratios, is lighter, has more power, is orange and is much louder.
Ben Mayall the e92 did a 12.4 at his best time on the 1/4 mile and most do a solid 12.8, 13.0 should be possible all day long, even with a manual. Of course the e92 will be faster (non gts)
check out nurburgring times the csl did it in 7:50. E92 M3 isn't even sub 8 minutes

Iv been lucky to have been in both rs4 and csl my mums friend made shelby cobra reps and he owned a csl back in 07 it was a beast so much power and my brother just got an rs4 and I can honestly say it forces you back in the seat so hard you struggle to move

I have owned E46, ordinary sedan with 2.0L engine and I have to admit it was a really nice car to drive. Sometimes when I see some E46 on the street I start to think about buying it again. Lovely car.

@Keli K. the b5 RS4 was made from 1999-2001 and the e46 BMW was made from 1997-2006. The BMW is actually an older design than the b5 Audi.

My M235i is 4.8 or 4.6 (auto) on a stat sheet and I tested it at 4.25 stock.

@@sixtimesfive8751 I'm going to sound like a blind fanboy I know. But at least for many new BMWs they underrated the bhp and 0-60 slightly. I'm not sure if it's to basically say 'this is the munimum' because no two cars are exactly the same.
But I've noticed this on many forum discussions.
For newer models thats correct. But older espacially rwd Bmw's always struggled delivering their 0-60 times
@@sixtimesfive8751 I said at least. I'm not saying old ones arent similarly misjudged. I'm making a point that often the paper rated specs magazines etc quoted were not necessarily what all the cars would put out. Then you factor in conditions and tyres.
RWD does struggle more with standing sprints of course but that's not going to give us anything to go on for older BMWs.
Mines is RWD. Doesn't tell us anything about what the actual times can be though as I know first hand.

E46 M3 any variant is an absolute classic, joy to see the CSL on a track, good luck trying to find one, prices for E46 M3s just keep going up and up... CSL is now collector money only.
