It was twofold. 1) Seig had absorbed Frankenstein's Galvanization earlier. 2) Seig, being a homonculus, meant he had a huge mana reserve. He would've lost against Karna regardless, but those 2 buffs gave him enough time to hold off Vasivi Shakti long enough for Astolfo to save the day

The reason he could keep up with Karna is because he had galvanization, which takes mana and other energies from the environment and converts them into prana. Which enables him to spam Balmung. Even someone like Richard was able to push Gilgamesh because he had a ton of prana. He is actually stronger than seigfried in this form since servant seigfried doesn't have a proper mana core like his alive self.
So… I actually decided to read into the lore a bit and uh… Believe it or not, actual Siegfried’s Balmung is not only more powerful than Sieg’s command spell and Galvanism combo, he can rapid fire it *even faster.* This is due to him having a Dragon Core. However as a Servant, the Dragon Core is heavily deteriorated. In other words, both Karna and Siegfried’s true powers get nerfed as Servants…

Nothing new, Servants are nerfed versions of the heroes usually. The fact that they get "narrowed down" to a single class, limiting them to what fits that class is enough of a tell.
For everyone that says "Sieg had plot armor", it was probably Alaya helping because that timeline would have gone kaput if Sieg didn't carry the Greater Holy Grail to the reverse side of the world. (at least that is my opinion, there are probably alternative explanations and honestly saying that he has plot armor is a valid explanation too)

Karna was a massive ass in the original myth, the whole generosity thing in Fate is playing off a single incident. Arjuna and his brothers were the heroes, while Karna was working with an outright villain.

In lore, to win in the final battle of the epic Mahabharata, in which the god of gods took part in humanly form, had to plan and plot to somehow get rid of karna's armor, so he sent a god which took the form of Sun God (Karna's father) who asked Karna to gift his armor. Yes Sieg has plot armor but if you compare to Shirou it's much more for Shirou's case. Also remember Siegfried recently deflected and endured a tametomo missile in Traum. Had it been the opposite case of Karna giving the heart and then fighting Siegfried instead, I believe Siegfried would get destroyed.

Guys like Herakles, Gilgamesh and Karna are certainly weaker as Servants due to the limitations of a Class container, but other Heroic Spirits are actually stronger as Servants, like Robin Hood and most Casters due to them not having the strength, speed, etc of a Servant in life.

However the amount of mana needed to summon and then sustain their bodies would kill basically all Mages except monstrously powerful ones like Zelretch or Aoko who have basically limitless prana, so we've never actually seen them at their strongest.

Last time I checked, Siegfried isn't a demigod, nor is Balmung a god-killing weapon. It is a Holy and Demonic sword yes, but not Anti-Divine.
