I love refurnished from manufacturer products. Even Apple products - and when I ship electronics on Amazon. Often, the warranty and return policies are the same as of the item was brand new. Also…if someone returns something after a day, it’s considered used - so they refurbish the, I have yet to receive an item refurbished from these companies that has ANY visible signs of wear.
Good arguments here. I also might add that by buying refurbished, you're helping with recycling a product so everyone wins in the transaction. If I get a refurbished R for this kind of money, I'd definitely go for it! A no brainer IMO.
The "shutter-like mechanism" in the Canon EOS R is the actual mechanical shutter, the same that the 5D Mark IV and all DSLRs have behind the mirror. Before the R, all mirrorless cameras kept their mechanical shutters open when turned off and the lens removed. It's such an obvious preventative of sensor dust in mirrorless cameras, I don't know why it took so long for someone to think of it. It's the Nikon Z9, which has no actual mechanical shutter, that contains a "shutter-like mechanism" to protect the sensor. Canon's optional CarePak Plus warranty program provides owners with replacement kit if a camera or lens damaged by a drop or water cannot be repaired. When my RF 24-105 F4L fell into the surf last year, Canon replaced it with a refurbished lens that looked and worked like new. Over a year later, no problems with it. And it came with the standard warranty and the option to add its own CarePak plan, which I did. So I'd have no qualms at this point with buying a refurbished body or lens from Canon if I need something.
It makes sense buying refurbished or used in the US but in the UK our grey market cameras often are much cheaper there is a company that actually offers 3 year warranties on the grey and has a good reputation. Our local camera shops selling second hand just can't even compete with grey. When it first came out the Canon R was a bit of a joke not even worth considering but they've improved the firmware so much it's worth buying if you want the RF lenses. The RF lenses are also just mind blowingly expensive in the UK. You mentioned the R1 I've given up thinking what it might be like considering how much they want for the R3. I'm looking to Nikon recently their pricing on the Z9 is superb without going grey actually better the Canon R3. Which just doesn't have the rez for wildlife.
Great information! Thanks! A few videos ago, you mentioned a battery that you find to be excellent. I can’t remember the name of it, it kinda looked like a double AA type battery. Are you gonna make a video about it? I seem to remember you said it has an extraordinary long life….
I think for my wish list as a frugal hobbyist the RP will meet my needs. I have been checking out the refurbs at canon but it’s been awhile since I browsed their website.
It's worthwhile to check the availability every so often if people are shopping for something specific because the inventory in the refurb store changes all the time. I bought an M50 a few years ago. It was in A1 condition.
I have been wanting to try this with my K mount 50mm! Its the lens I learned photography on along with a K1000 back in the 90's. Do you have an adapter that you suggest?
Nice, glad to see someone took advantage of the spring sale on the R. I have been alerting people to that price since it dropped (It is unfortunately over now). For 1300 bucks it's a lot of camera when compared to other offerings in that price range. I'd take it over a 6DmkII any day of the week for that price (though I have never liked the 6DmkII). I felt it was really overpriced at launch for what it could do, especially considering the A7III I think was out at the time, and was cheaper and was just a significantly better camera. But at the current price, with an adapter, I agree it has a ton of value, and that is why I kept suggesting it while the sale was on. I have bought many refurbished items. Never had one problem. To add to the value, they have the same 1 year warranty that comes with a new item, and the camera/lens has been inspected by a tech. If you hold out for or look for the sale times (spring, fall, end of year), you can get some crazy good deals. Best deal I ever got was an 80D, 10-18mm STM, 18-135mm USM, 70-300mm IS II USM, a tote bag, and a 32mb Sandisk V30 card, all for 1100 after tax. It was like, 2500 USD retail for all that stuff, and I only paid 1100. Not a common thing to see, but worth keeping an eye out for.
I have bought several refurb items from Canon, including the 5DSR, a 1.4x and 2.0x TC, and some lenses. Very pleased with all the refurb stuff I have. However, I do like a nice new toy every now and then. I like my main body to be new, but I don't need everything to be new. One thing I don't like about refurbs from Canon is that they send you a junk box. Seems like they could just make a brown cardbroad box for refurbs, I'd like that better than a rando box. They could even print Canon Refurb on the outside of the box, but they don't want to spend any extra money on the refurb box.
I am curious, since you are a far more experienced photographer than I, if you get more in focused shots with the R when using fast primes, verses same glass on a dslr? Especially using eye AF. The RF L glass has a nice coating that helps maintain contrast when shooting into the light. The 135 L does the opposite, both can be artistic.
I never tried an R, but I know on my R5 and R6 they both nail it at shallow DOF with the eye AF, even with third party lenses. But I think this also depends on the lens. Lenses like the EF 50mm F1.2 were notorious for having spotty focus wide open, and this could be the same on R cameras. We always just assumed the shallow DOF on a slow AF lens was to blame. Wouldn't mind having one to try.
@@kevindiaz3459 I agree with Kevin. Even old fast glass sigmas which had inconsistent AF with DSLRs are now have a huge percentage jump in keepers. I also have an R5 and it does have better AF and the EOSR but I heard after the last firmware update for the EOS R the AF was much better. I think for portraits I heard it was fantastic. For birds in flight not as good as the R5 but better than the 5d anything.
Unfortunately the sale ended. :( But the refurb price is still better than a new camera, but I would think about holding out and see if they offer it again for the fall sale. Go to cpricewatch.com to get updates on canon deals.
That clear filter is 130 USD for the Canon one. Just, BS. It should come with the clear filter. I actually got lucky on a price error on BnH and got the 299 CPL drop in adapter for 99 dollars, when they accidentally switched the price with the basic adapter. They honored it. I didn't even have an RF camera until over a year later LOL! It was just too good a price to pass up.
With the latest firmware AF for eye tracking is pretty good on this camera. Also you can buy Kase ND filters that slip into the the EF to RF adapter or you can buy them that slip over the sensor behind the adapter for $49 to $59 dollars. One filter will work with any lens. (EF-S lenses you want the filter that goes over the sensor) I have used them, the seem to work well. I would like to buy an R1 but I have an R5 and I don't think I am going to be upgrading.
The biggest issue with the EOS R is the single card slot. For studio work I suppose you could tether it. For remote pro work. I wouldn't trust it. Great camera other than that.
Looking to buy a Nikon D4 with low shutter count. An indestructible professional camera for sports action and wildlife. So cheap compared to when new. I can get i can get it refurbished and still be ahead. 400,000 design shutter count, 800,000 plus reported. It will outlive me. Just need to sell my D3 & D600. I convinced myself I’m saving the planet, LOL.
Example. The shutter mech does not work, they replace it and run diagnostics to see if there is anything else that needs servicing. Then clean / lube and call it good
Absolutely Canon R is extremely valuable, it is better than my Canon 6 D mark II because of AF also as more megapixel and for headshots is a really god camera and all additional feature that you have Face detection and eye detection and better video in 1080p. You did the right thing I may follow your lead before they are out totally. Regarding R5 I do own it and it is my favorite Canon camera period just a majestic camera i don't have any issues so far ( i don't do long video :) )
Joe you ARE DEAD ON value, value, value. At 67 years old and being semi-retired I need another career like I need marital problems, I'm NEVER going pro. So with that in mind (speaking Nikon) saving 40% on a refurbished, fully warranted D850 and a set of 3 lenses is a no brainer! I still professionally do tons of image editing but I will not take the bread of the table of a pro photographer by pretending to be one. So this is all for fun expense. VALUE. It's not like I'll ever wear a pro body like that out. Just FYI my area South Central PA, my son and his wife bought a home 18 months ago, yesterday it's been appraised 38% higher, WOW!
I'm a little surprised you did this, you always say you don't want to be a beta tester for manufacturers and the R was the first RF body. If you bought the R5 or R3 I would understand. I agree that control bar was a stupid idea and the control ring on the adaptor and on the RF lenses I never used, but I think it could be useful for some things. When I switched to Canon in 2017 I did a one on one CPS training class at Canons Melville NY. location and the instructor told me about the refurbish store. He said that all the lenses and bodies get inspected and tested by three separate techs before they are sold. I ended up buying a couple EF lenses from them and they all were great so I think he was telling the truth and not just BS me. I also bought my Pentax 645Z from Ricohs refurb store and that was also just as good. If i would've gotten it as a gift I never would've known it wasn't brand new.
I can tell you by experience is yes if coming directly from the manufacturer or well established reputablr company as doing it all the time and never buy any new equipement at full price 😏😏

I think the EOS R is great. It has a lot going for it, you just need to tweak some setting in the settings menu to make it work for you.
Great discussion J, this is the sort of stuff I like you talking about, down to earth and in the real world. Excellent.
Excellent Rob.. So glad you enjoyed it.
Good info JC, just the sort of thing we all need to know.

Absolutely. I’ve been very impressed by CPS myself.
@@jcristina if I ever get monetized on UA-cam or otherwise qualify as a "pro", CPS will definitely be the way to go.

You can also use Pentax k lenses with an adapter. Focus peaking works great.
Nice, James!!!!!
