Obviously Kenneth Branagh is among the very best who have ever performed the works of Shakespeare, but the entire delivery at 1:10 hammers home his range as an actor. It takes a lot of sincerity and honesty to deliver a line like *that* and it still gives me shivers. Sorry to sound melodramatic but my god man, what a great fucking actor.

Hamlet cannot tolerate the behavior of Laertes because Hamlet knows in his heart that he is the agent of Ophelia's destruction, and because of this Hamlet has an irresistible need to face Laertes down. There is an arrogance in Hamlet's behavior. One line associated with this scene is when Hamlet mentions Laertes "trying to outface me with jumping into her grave". Hamlet is in full denial. He sees the suffering his actions have caused, and he can't handle it. He has to outface Laertes because Laertes is the embodiment of the suffering Hamlet has caused. Hamlet's madness becomes much more genuine here, and it's denial of the catastrophe he has caused that is at its core. There are extreme contrasts in the way Hamlet treats Ophelia, and in the way he communicates with her. In the letters that Polonius makes Ophelia divulge he is expressing ardent love. He writes, "I have not the art to express my groans". Then, not too long after, he is telling her to go to a whorehouse. (i.e. "get thee to a nunnery"). Ophelia becomes Hamlet's punching bag in his frustration over his father's death. But there is another reason too for Hamlet's cruel treatment of his one time love, one not completely out in the open, but still very powerful. It is my belief that Hamlet has gotten Ophelia pregnant. There are many indications that this is the case, but I won't go into them here.

Back then the word "nunnery" was slang for "whorehouse", and no, I've never been to one. How about you?

Literally writing my essay on this, glad im not alone. He allows his emotions towards his fathers murder to get out of control, and because of it, the chaos spreads. “When you begin a journey of revenge, start by digging two graves”but in this case, he wouldve had to dig several 💀💀💀

In case you're wondering, crocodiles are DELICIOUS. It's like a three-way cross between fish, red meat and poultry, and makes spectacular jerky.

Because he had been promised Hamlet's death already.
He was raging yes, but he was also grieving, and some small scrap of him did not wish to shed blood over Olivia's grave.

Hamlet has just gotten an eyefull of the suffering his behavior has caused, and he has to deny his part in it, but he can't. He knows in his heart that he is the most responsible for Ophelia's death, and every claim he makes about it is exagerated, i.c. "I loved Ophelia, 40,000 brothers could not overtop my love for her, ... You talk of mountains, let them throw millions of acres on us. Hamlet is desperately trying to absolve himself of guilt for Ophelia's death.
