CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Hamlet (Mel Gibson) contemplates whether it is better to fight through the troubles of this life or drift into eternal sleep.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Franco Zeffirelli directs his third Shakespeare adaptation (after Romeo and Juliet and Otello) with this film version of the tragedy Hamlet. The titular prince of Denmark (Mel Gibson), returns home to his family's castle of Elsinore after years of attending school in Germany to find out his father has died and his uncle Claudius (Alan Bates) is the new king. To make matters worse, Claudius has married Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude (Glenn Close), whom he has unusually strong feelings for. Hamlet is visited by his father's ghost (Paul Scofield), who asks him to seek revenge for his murder. In order to find out who the real killer is, Hamlet stages a theatrical scene resembling his father's death. Claudius is upset by the production and leaves to arrange for Hamlet's murder. In the ensuing confusion, Hamlet accidentally kills Polonious (Ian Holm) instead of Claudius; Hamlet's lover, Ophelia (Helena Bonham Carter), goes mad and commits suicide; and eventually Hamlet and Claudius both meet their fate.

I don't know know why but I adore his performance as Hamlet. He seems so lost and yet he knows what he must do. His eyes and voice give me chills. Wonderful interpretation.
He did his Hamlet. Good. As Ian Holm mentioned. Every actor has to find Hamlet.
Hands down best Hamlet. He helped me understand the story perfectly.
Brother an Indian movie haider is the best interpretation of Hamlet I feel
No doubt. This may be the single greatest monologue ever written in western fiction.
@@RustinChole And Shakespeare was the greatest playwright & observer of the complicated thing we call "the human condition" of the Western world. 500 years later, his words resonate in ways no one can match. Whether grief, jealousy, passion, betrayal, revenge, love, lust, joy, ambition, light-heartedness, mischief, Shakespeare wrote about it all - and to this day he has no equal. I feel fortunate to have seen wonderful actors interpret and bring his words to life - a heartfelt "thank you" to ALL of them !!!
@@beebee9803 there’s a line from Octave Mirbeau’s “the torture garden” that comes damn close for me, (from 1899):
“what else do you do except to lie, to lie to your self, and to others, and to lie to everything which in the depths of your heart you know to be the truth?
You are obliged to feign an outward respect for persons and institutions that you find absurd. You remain timidly attached to moral or social conventions, which you despise and condemn, and which you know have no justification at all.
It’s the permanent contradiction between your ideas, your desires, and all the dead forms and vain pretenses of your civilization which makes you sad troubled and imbalanced.
In this unbearable conflict you lose all your joy of life and feeling of personality, because at every minute the free play of your instincts is being constricted, impeded, and stopped.
This is the poisonous deadly scourge of the civilized world.”
It's impossible to understand Hamlet, u can just love it, without understanding
He does a great job at making each word feel like he just thought of it
Damn I've seen so many Hamlets...I never thought Mel Gibson of all people would deliver one of, if not my most, favorite(s). He's deep, he's angry, he's confused, he's scared...as someone who used to be suicidal I relate the most to his. I also love the set the up here, contemplating suicide in the tomb of his ancestors, wishing to be among them. It's brilliant to me. This version of Hamlet is what made me start to appreciate Shakespeare.
Tbh my favorite is from black butler (an anime). It’s not the full soliloquy but it’s still really good
Amen! I'm putting together a video about suicide, and dedicating it to my best friend and his Son who killed themselves. I decided to start the video with me performing Hamlet, in an old cemetery on the graves of my ancestors. Wish me luck... I'm going to need it.
I'll take Mel's performance over Lawrence Olivier's any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Yeah, I was also suicidal for a long time, and came very, very close to shooting my head clean off with my father's shotgun when I was 18 and withdrawing from painkillers and heroin for the first time(well, the first time it was _really_ bad at least.) That, and the fact that I had no money, no job, my mom had gotten off the Dilaudid, fentanyl, and levorphanol that she was on for so long, and where my addiction began, I had just spent the entire summer in my room getting high instead of going out with friends every night like I'd normally do, and lastly, I'd just left my first semester of college on medical leave(due to depression, though the main problem was my addiction), as I had completely stopped going to classes.
I still have this page bookmarked in my copy of Hamlet(I went through a big Shakespeare phase after either the second or third time I got clean, and just started devouring books now that my head was clear and I could concentrate, and also because when you come off heroin, which numbs your emotions, those emotions come back like a freight train, allowing you to get emotionally invested in every book you read, or movie you watch, etc. I kid you not I was crying at kids shows and Disney movies.)
My original high school year book quote was, "...and thus does conscience make cowards of us all," until my ninth grade teacher was going through the quotes before they were sent in, and of course recognized it. He checked on me, and said that it would be inappropriate to use that quote. So my quote got changed to the much less significant, "We're all mad here" by the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland.
Okay, I'm rambling. Lol. I'm done now.
He was good as Hamlet. He brought his own unique energy to it, which is what it's all about.
Yeah, he was pretty good. My only beef is that he's way too old(or at least looks way too old) to be playing Hamlet(who I think was (possibly) 16 years old, though some argue he was thirty years old based on one line, thought that brings up significant problems, and in my opinion doesn't really make sense.)
Yeah, back in 1990 I was one of those affected snobs who reacted to the release of this "Hamlet" with, "Mel GIBSON?? What next, Stallone as Julius Caesar? ("Yo, Brutus!") Well, color me humbled, because Gibson is very credible as the Bard's unbalanced prince. Whether you're a fan of his or not, there's no doubt the guy has talent. Teaming with Franco Zeffirelli-who made ‘Romeo and Juliet’ so relatable for us hormonal teens in 1968- was the icing on the cake.
He very much out performed (in my opinion) Branagh in every fashion, and although it's a personal preference, the more casual less formal nature of his acting makes this Hamlet feel more human and more aching and relateable in his pain than that of Olivier.
I won't claim to be a snob, but I was horrified, too - the guy from Lethal Weapon (which I loved), as *Hamlet*??? No flippin' way - they're miscasting him because of his popularity, and it'll suck.
And then I saw it - to date, the most genuine, realistic Hamlet I've ever seen. Gibson doesn't intone those phrases - he bleeds them out of his heart. I was wrong, before I saw it - and I doubt that anyone will ever see it bettered.
emdoub Well said, emdoub. Without real talent-as well as a brilliant director in Franco Zeffirelli-this wouldn’t have worked.
I hear what he really wants to do is direct.
They gave it a try. Pretty good
He made this performance more humane rather than theatrical. I love Mel in this.
The best version of William Shakespeare' s Hamlet's soliloquy of 'to be or not to be"... Profound performance... remarkable !!
Totally got behind it, spontaneous.
Idk about best. Mel put it to us.
He is amazingly good in this role.
Just the look in his eyes.... He looks so lost. I got goosebumps watching it.
His passion and devotion to avenge his father's death, hamlet is truly an emotionally role and mel gibson did a phenomenal role.
I think this is actually Mel's best acting job. You can hear his Aussie accent coming through in a few words, but no matter.
The scene where he contemplated suicide in Leathal Weapon got him this role. Only a person with some serious personal demons would understand what this character is going through. That pretty well defines Mel.
I wanna say this the role that land him Brave Hart as well .
My God what a performance.
Was quiet impressed by Gibson's portrayal, saw it in the theater when it came out. He brings an energy and franticness which lies just under the surface.
I saw this when it came out and was so impressed with Mel's Hamlet. I just watched it again and he is fantastic, clear, moving.
That is likely the best that anyone will ever see those lines delivered almost as though to the very Spirit of every word.
I have watched every version I can find, because this is where my head has been for most of my adult life. I have watched Richard Burton, Sir Laurence Olivier, David Tennant and many others. Yeah, who would have thought, Mel Gibson would be the best version, in my opinion!!!
Though I don't wander into the darkness of this story often...it is always THIS interpretation that I am drawn to. Though I have seen this story told by many different actors...it is this version that satiates my soul. Granted...there are other actors that delivered these same lines in much more dramatic manor...but few, if any, have delivered said lines with as much passion and conviction. Nor had anyone previous accomplished making The Bard's story so relatable...so...touch-able.
Though Mr. Gibson might not be the greatest actor we have ever seen...though he's had his moments...he seems here to have completely embodied the essence of this particular character. Does he seem crazy? Oh, without a doubt (a tribute to his skill as an actor). Does he seem driven toward greater aspirations? You tell me.... At the same time...does he OVER-play the role? No. He genuinely FEELS like he IS Hamlet. For that, I must give him Kudos.
Actors take note- this is how you perform Shakespeare. Quiet and understated. I love this.
I admit, I haven't seen classics with Barrymore, etc. But, Mel Gibson delivers those DIFFICULT lines in a conversational manner so the words have meaning. Even obscure words we no longer use make sense because of his impeccable delivery. Unlike Branagh who performs in his lofty-more-british-than-you-dumb-american style.Yeah, I'm American, so slow it down and INTERPRET the lines like a real actor. Mel's had some problems personally, but this is the finest performance of his career.
As a teen I was quite a snob, and Branagh was my favourite actor. Luckily I grew up, I became wiser and acquired a lot of knowledge. And so I realized that Branagh is full of himself, and he isn't even half as talented as I thought.
@@msinvincible2000, I've never thought of a comparison of cinematic talent between Gibson and Branagh.
My choice is Gibson.
Even after Mel Gibson's making those offensive societal behaviors, my decision is not prejudiced.
I still like watching movies that Mel Gibson has made.
Branagh? I won't throw 'shade' on Kevin's movies. I just prefer watching Gibson's movies.
@@msinvincible2000i literally could take highschoolers with decent memory and make a way better hamlet than Branagh’s. He delivers the lines so unnaturally and fast, and the setting isnt even right. Such a glib take on hamlet imo. Mel’s is the best to date!
@@Quintessenceofdust7 Come on, you are harsh. Brannagh does a very good job with Hamlet. It's another style, but by no means bad.
Probably the best version of this classic
Wow. I was sick for a few days, and I was out of school and my sister comes home and tells me to watch this. And wow.
My essay is on this speech tomorrow. Must watch this over and over!
His performance as HAMLET got me into Shakespeare. 20 years ago. First time I understood the beauty of Shakespeare. American, I keep discovering new truths on my retired treadmill. This began it all.
My English literature teacher assigned me to play Hamlet when we read it in class this coming spring... I had no idea what I was getting into.
I’ve always loved this rendition of Hamlet by Mel
Gibson.
"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players"
Made me cry. Such profound interpretation!
Classically extraordinary basing on how Hamlet once the prince of Denmark who had suffered an impoverished life had the capacity of declaring possession of the soul in his own heart.
Best version of Hamlet ever filmed.
To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them. To die-to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to: 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep, perchance to dream-ay, there's the rub:
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause-there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
Th'oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of dispriz'd love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovere'd country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience doth make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action.
This is the ONLY version of Hamlet’s monologue I like. I’ve seen/heard all the others...Olivier, Burton, Branaugh, Tennant, Scott, Cumberbatch, McKellan and a few more...this is the only one that feels real to me. I can totally see a lost & confused person who suicidal go to their family grave and think about life and death, wanting to sleep with them but figuring out the will is not there. It happens in real life. This is the only Hamlet to me.
I am completely agree with you Taylor Melton. MEL GIBSON is the only one actor that really LIVES the character. I have watched so many versions of Hamlet in theatre and cinema since more that 50 years ago, (I am a no professional actor in Spain), Hamlet is my favorite play and the most important in the World Literature Drama. Sir Lawrence Olivier is also very good, but not as good as Mel Gibson. Greetings from the Eternal Spain.
Agreed. Masterful performance.
RIP maestro Zefirelli. The BEST
This was shown in tandem with high school when it came out. We got a behind the scenes video and free passes. I LOVE THIS MOVIE
What a great delivery! Beautiful.
easily the best hamlet
I wish Hamlet would just make up his mind.
So does Hamlet. ;)
It's sublime. Such a good job.
The 1& only definitive rendition of Hamlet ever caught on film...
This quote is way overused, but if you've ever contemplated suicide you understand hamlet's struggle here really deeply.
I like how he played it with sorrow and subtlety rather than being over the top. Probably the best performance of the character I’ve seen.
thank you for the Croatian subtitles, very helpful
Mel nails it
Gibson has never been regarded as a profound actor. But, I think he nailed this scene.
I really loved this video. I would recommend it 10/10 stars
Grandios. Ich ich habe 14 (oder 15) Hamlet-Versionen auf DVD und auch auf VHS. Diese ist eine der besten. Das ist jetzt kein Scherz!
Was reading Hamlet for Exams and got Obsessed with the character , I watched all 4 actors playing Hamlet and Mel's performance was the best. Baranagh looked like a cartoon 😂 oh and Cumberbatch did an amazing job as Hamlet😍
I have never known Mel Gibson for good acting. This, however, is the best rendition of "To Be or Not To Be" soliloquy on camera. He nails it with his eyes.
I think you might be right. His eyes were great. That speech is nearly impossible, if you're trying to sound natural, but he did okay.
shexmus Mel Gibson has always been known for his good acting; one of the best actors. You noticed hs beautiful baby blue eyes in this movie only?
I prefer Schwarzeneggers version.....
"To be or not to be"
(Huge explosion in the background)
"Not to be"
+la dodgers 4 life Hahahah 😎😎😎😎
I prefer Mel Brooks
I cant say that 1990 was very memorable I was still in highschool
This is really good
I'm going to say something scandalous: Taken as a whole Mel Gibson's performance as Hamlet is better than the film performances of Olivier, Branagh and Jacobi. Scandalous but true. Olivier, Branagh and Jacobi are/were better actors than Gibson in general, but Gibson got to the core of Hamlet in a way they never managed too. Wish we had a filmed record of Scofield as Hamlet...
David Hemingway agreed
Agree
Agreed. Olivier's or Branagh's are not natural.
a different type of acting. all are valid.
YES SCOFIELD is the ONE
I can't believe I still find this Hamlet the most believable one haha. I've rechecked Kenneth Brannagh's, Lawrence Olivier's and I still find this, at least, the most accurate of the way I pictured him the first time I read the play.

Be all my sins remember'd.
he did nail it, I think so!
Katerina Pagonidou than you im search, im nota speak inglish
Ty
Katerina Pagonidou
yo really wrote down the whole part of
hamlet
Bravo!!!
Wow, I've listened to several interpretations today. Mel is really, really good.
No offense to Olivier, Branagh, Tennant, or the rest, but Gibson is THE BEST Hamlet. He really gets this character. And he plays this scene exactly as I hear Hamlet when I read this soliloquy in the play. Gorgeous performance.
Shakespeare, John Milton, William Blake👏👏 They made us human.
A noble effort overall
I've never seen this before. I'm surprised this is really good. I'm off to find the movie.
say what you want about Mel, but he is a singular talent.
His hamlet was fantastic and different..
This is arguably the most human rendition of the soliloquy. You don't watch the actor playing the role, you watch the prince himself..
"...And lose the name of action.- Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia!- Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins rememb'red."
Nooo just missed out the last part, but this rendition is excellent, he understands the words, I still don't hehe!
I was more impressed in 1990, as opposed to the critics. Now, though, I can see him acting here.
Это просто великолепное исполнение, лучшее из того, что я когда-либо слышала.
Leathal Weapon to this is called "range"! Was blown away back in the day! Strangely enough, it was his contemplating suicide scene in Leathal Weapon that got him considered for this role in the first place.
He is broke my heart becuse he was very hearted
Brave-hearted
I think that Hamlet in this monologue wanted to communicate all of his pain towards life, which can be seen very well through his gestures, expressions ecc... . But the most important action is when he collapsed on one of the graves, a sign of approaching non-been, therefore to death. Mel Gibson has interpreted this very well, so congratulations!!!!
BEST HAMLET MEL GIBSON
i literally just watched this because my english teacher assigned it😃 and now i have to do an essay about this movie clip COMMONN😀
I submitted subtitles for this clip, hopefully they'll be approved soon, so people can enjoy it more!
Croatian ?
Who else here is watching this movie in English class just to not use any of what we learned in this movie later in our lives?
Great
Doing this for school
Destiny is always written, we can run away from it, but it is up for us to keep the fire burning, to wake up another day what dreams may come. To fulfill our roles given to us by a mysterious force. We maybe pawns, we maybe kings. It is for us to take the courage of playing the game of life. In the end, we all have choice, choice to fight and take courage to confront death, who is like a thief in the night not knowing when they'll come. To live and live, not to live and die.
No need to compare.
This is deep
This got me into Shakespeare
Can someone describe the location where this part of the movie takes place? Is it a palace? Is it a museum? What kind of place is it? I am taking a digital media class for my college spring semester and my classmates and I are going to be learning how to perform and record digital media.
Is it Gibson? Don't believe my eyes! Great!
Asmr at the start haha
Wow! Mr. Gibson brought the soliloquy To Be.
Hamlet, only you understand...
They may make us not to be, but they'll never make me not be me!
Had to, i was writing an essay contrasting Branagh, Tennant and Gibson. Needed to create a flame war to get some ideas.
This performance is better than Olivier and Branagh.
I agree.
Have to disagree. Branagh is far better than Gibson.
When I saw this version of Hamlet, did I realize how underrated of an actor be Mel Gibson.
I have to admit, in 1989 or 90, I laughed when I heard that Mel Gibson was doing Hamlet, but damn if he didn’t pull it off
And it’s also the dilemma. Because the impossibility of certainty in one’s decision makes taking action to be difficult for some people.
i prefer this speech
MEL GIBSON IS THE BEST ACTOR TO PLAY HAMLET
Mel Gibson, you were great in this. However, Mel Brooks was hilarious in that skit scene in "To Be Or Not To Be", the movie. That classic WWII comedy film!!
This movie made me learn Shakespeare
Mel Gibson can act.
you give a good actor bad material results BLA!, you give a bad actor good material results BLA!
BUT you give a very good actor very very good material and it's a masterpiece!!!
Mel is very talented
0:00-0:38
so fanzesco
Find many people make it, speak with them self
It is the voice of Shakespeare himself.
Mel is so good.
