  • Here are some tips about traveling with vinyl records, especially air travel. I also share two bags that I think are great options for carrying/transporting your valuable records
MY #1 PICK: Tucker & Bloom North to South Messenger Bag:
    www.tucker-bloom.com/collecti...
I chose T&B because it looks great, they make their bags here in the states, and they come with a lifetime warranty. The owner of the company is a DJ/vinyl fan himself and they make a ton of great bags that help solve for the problem of "how do I safely transport my records"

Buy a cheap drone bag. It should have good padding all the way around and cardboard sheets will protect them even more. Mine can fit about 30 single LPs

I just use a 12x12" scrapbook case that you can find for $5-10 at any art supply store. If the hard plastic shell can prevent scrap paper from being damaged in transit, it can definitely protect those precious records. Mine has enough room for about 20 LPs, with a bit of wiggle room around the edges to stuff a layer of newspaper or something for some quick and easy padding. Toss that in any carry-on bag and you're ready to fly those records home.

@@TooManyRecords omg this is saving me, I have a single vinyl I picked up out of state, because I was supposed to be able to leave it in an apartment. Plans changed.
I should just bubble wrap all the remaining negative space right?

To be honest, a way to travel with vinyl is to put the in a hard trolley, the one can go in the cabin, and put some bubble paper around the vinyl and keep them on the hard side of the luggage. On the other side just put some soft clothes. I do this since 2014 on a regular basis every three months, and I am super fine, no warps or other issues. Super secure.

Nice video as always Matt! I think there’s great info here for all the travelers in the vinyl community; sadly I almost never travel so I have nothing to add to the conversation besides keep up the good work, my friend!

Just a quick note on Matt's recommendations. The problem with them is that while they are definitely convenient to travel with they aren't good for your back. Take it from someone who has a Trapped Nerve due to poor Posture you don't want to using bags with a shoulder strap. Unfortunately, this isn't something the companies think about when they are designing these bags and my guess is that most people don't either. But if I could go back in time I would definitely only use bags with 2 straps or carry things in containers I can carry in my arms. Hopefully postural health is something companies will take into consideration in the future. Thanks

Hi Mat, you reminded me I had a domestic flight canceled and put on another flight seat 1A great you say it was the worst seat on the plane and yes I had about 8 records I bought on my trip and the flight attendant put them in the overhead and yes a late passengers hard case was shoved in against my vinyl 🙀 luckily they survived, they don’t understand our passion

Traveling with records is always stressful. I bring leftover mailorder bubble wrap whenever I fly now, so I can at least wrap them up nicely as one unit, whatever I choose to put them in.

I bought a drone bag with padding and a strap inside that I can slide cardboard sheets between to make it more stiff. It's funny how I realized it was a perfect option for me because it was so cheap. It was on clearance at "Toys R us". I bought it when the store was closing for I think $15.
I use it often when I buy/trade in records at shops and when I bring them over to friends houses.

I like vintage record carrying cases.. Can usually get them fairly cheap and they offer a lot more protection than any of the newer soft cases. To each his own though. 👍

My backpack I use every day fits about 10-15 records. I've flown with it with about as many from The Netherlands and I also take it with me to record fairs where I sell records. It has no padding or anything, but it's either on my back or if I'm on a plane, under the seat in front of me, so damage is highly unlikely. I also put the records in a tote before putting them in the backpack. I haven't had any issues so far. I bought the bag at Marks & Spencer for half off (I think it was about 25-30 USD-ish) years and years ago.

I love the idea of those bags for the rarer records. Most record stores are really cool about shipping them for you if you ask and will let you pack them how you want. I have even shipped less rare records from a store and they have also given me a smaller box that holds like 5 records or so to take with me which nicely fits in a tote bag if that is what you have.

If I shop local to home, I make sure it is my last stop or if I have to stop elsewhere they come inside with me! If I have traveled on a plane and shop local record shops at my destination, I save myself the grief and have them ship for me or take it to the post office myself and ship it. The struggle is real! 😜

I'm about to move into a new city and first thing I did was to buy 4 sturdy and professional looking record cases for around 80 bucks each. quite expensive for me, but I think it'll be worth it since I'm planning to get a moving company to handle everything. The website said each case can hold up to 80 records, so yeah, quite a lot.

I'm going to Australia and New Zealand (and Fiji) in the fall 2022 and plan on doing some digging. If I find any must haves I'm probably just going to suck it up and pay for them to be extra safely boxed up and shipped back home. Lugging records across 3 countries and on multiple long haul flights is a logistical nightmare in my mind.

    • @TooManyRecords

I once traveled with records in the overhead. They were fine, but my mum's shoulder...not so much. She was sitting in the aisle seat and when someone opened the compartment, they'd obviously slid around a bit and thus fell out, hitting her shoulder on the way down.

It is not a trend in bags (the orange), it is one of the smartest designs as it keeps the inside of the bags bright to help you not lose things deep inside. All black or dark brown bag liners are terrible and help you to lose things.
