The vast bulk of the cost of a super yacht goes into paychecks. Not just at the shipyard, but into the paychecks of workers and managers at the suppliers of all kinds of finished goods and raw materials that are used. The number of jobs (and actually "good" jobs) created by the construction, and then the actual use of a super yacht is enormous.

eSysman: Your Dad was only 16yrs old?! Now THAT's a salty dog and good countryman. My Dad was 17 when he enlisted in the US Navy just after Pearl Harbor and deployed after training, to Whidbey Island, Washington state, USA, as an airman in a PBY flying boat. He was a cryptological tech and radioman and 30 cal. nose gunner. They don't make them like that anymore. Folks like your Dad (and mine) and many others like them are why we aren't speaking German, as they say. God bless all of them. As always, thanks for another great post with top-shelf content, production and presentation. Cheers.

Octopus was always scheduled to do 2 charters in Antarctica this winter, that statement was in the Boat International article published in early 2022. Michael Lee Chin is also known as a Jamaican & Canadian businessman, part of his fortune that he made was from a Canadian based mutual fund company he owned that he sold in 2009.

My Dad was in a convoy across the North Sea to the US and they were chased by U-boats most of the way. In his diary he says the U-boats would wait until their escorts went to the other side of the convoy and then they would surface and fire torpedoes into a ship. They weren’t allowed to stop to pick anyone up. Nice to see ships from that time still sailing.

When speaking of Motoryacht "Christina"(now "Christina O"). It should be remembered that for decades from the 1950's-70's, she was not only the largest privately owned yacht in the world, but also the most opulent, complete with fireplace lined with Lapis Lazuli, mosaic swimming pool and whaleskin bar stools.
She was "The" yacht "anyone who was anyone" was seen on board. Their Serene Highnesses, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Winston Churchill, The "Taylor-Burtons" Jackie Kennedy(who would later marry Onassis) and her sister, Princess Lee Radziwill etc., and of course Onassis' long term, on-off mistress, Opera Diva Maria Callas, just to mention a few. Yet for all her legendary glamour, "Christina" being an ex-warship had been built for sea-worthiness rather than comfort of those on board. Despite Onassis lavishing millions on her, she always had the tendency to roll, pitch and yaw, severely in anything more than a 3 foot swell, this was before the days of the latest technological advances, so at the firstsign of bad weather, "Christina" would turn and scurry off to the safety of the nearest port, frequently grimilly commercial, rather than glamorous.. Very few these days can match that sort of glamour though..!

2 Helicopters onboard is a legal requirement if you want to helilift (for example to go skiiing) in polar regions. Obviously you don't want to have your $10m helicopters left out on deck in such conditions, so a hanger is sort of required too. Not many vessels afloat can meet these requirements, good Ol' Octopus !

My dad's 95 and still going strong by the way - very lucky he didn't come in at the beginning of the war, when the U-boats were sinking them at a prodigious rate. Last year, the United States Congress got around to thanking the Merchant Mariners of WWII with a proclamation and a medallion they could BUY. Can you imagine? He guys, thanks for saving us all from the Nazis. You wanna buy a medal? Jeezus H. Peezus.

It's as if the money just disappears into a black hole somewhere and nobody benefits from its existence. It seems these people learn the amount paid for something by a wealthy person and immediately begin to roll out disparaging remarks about a complete stranger and presume to have the authority to direct said stranger how to spend their money. Is it conceivable that a boat that is 20 years old may have used much heavier materials than larger, newer yachts, that use materials that lighter weight? It seems like gross tonnage might not be the most accurate way to measure the size of a yacht? Maybe length, width and square footage (deck space)? When a yacht is built look at the tens of thousands of hours of hours spent in wages in just building. Then the hours of mining, steel making, transportation. Then the jobs supported in interior finishing. The jobs that are paid for in crews, maintenance , marina fees and workers. They in turn spend the wages supporting thousands of other workers. One yacht being built keeps thousands of other from becoming homeless.

I do not think anyone outside of the UK knows who Lewis Hamilton is but I suspect anyone who has ever seen the winter Olympics knows who Shaun White is.

Why would you order a yacht, wait years for it to complete, and then sell it after a year? 🤔

Maybe because his country was invaded by Russia, leaving him with uncertainty about his future financial security. Maybe he thinks having funds to finance his country's defense is more important than owning a super yacht.

Great Video. I can see why you are 'jealous' of the trips with MY Octopus. Who knows, eSysman, your personal story could evolve as Michael Lee-Chin's and you could commission a vessel similar to MY Octopus, or whatever else your heart desires. I would be thrilled for you and am sure you would use your resources to do good in the world. Really nice story on Christina O as well. I do remember seeing some of her story, must have been on this channel since I get all my super yacht and any yacht information here. A story about Mr Lee-Chin would be fascinating, and no doubt positive. Ahpo is gorgeous, the man has good taste in my opinion. A welcome switch up from lives of corrupt selfish oligarchs and the likes of Bezos.

Concerning the "charity" comments - my gosh! if somebody has enough money to buy a yacht & send it wherever they choose to sail (er, yacht), you should really be concerned about its carbon footprint. Many hands go into building that boat, operating it and maintaining it - that in it self is giving back to many communities around the world. That is far better than charity. To each their own.

Carbon footprint is a different conversation, unrelated to the charity comments. Also the idea and term 'carbon footprint' was created by a marketing team for BP (an oil company).

Let's go EVEN FURTHER! About "APHO" yacht. When you build a yacht just who does that? Aren't there hundreds if not thousands of people in all kinds of businesses that get paid for their expertise? Why the hell is that NEVER mentioned as a good thing? They aren't just sitting around thinking someone OWES them something! They are collectively getting off their ASSES and going to work. So, all the nay sayers? Bite me! And yes, I'm a skilled craftsman in my job.
