As you're aware, high value assets, like yachts, are often owned through very complex financial structures (LLC's, trusts, various type of corporations). These are often "nested" into the financial equivalent of a matroshka doll. Multiple financial entities, often across multiple countries, in layers. While the supposed owner of this yacht may not be on sanctions list, I imagine that if he can't convince HMG that he is the true beneficial owner of the asset, HMG can impound it until such time as he can. Crescent Beach Yachts in Canada builds some pretty nice yachts in British Columbia. Since there;s so much "Howe Street Hooker" money in Vancouver it's got to go someplace. Jimmy Pattisons' yacht looks like a pair of wrap around sunglasses. Jimmys' a "ginger" and doesn't see too much sun, so not much of a need for deck!! Nice looking unique boat often near the Bayshore Inn in Vancouver Harbour. Lots of caribbean flag state boats in BC. oh, "Howe Street" is where the penny stock Vancouver Stock Exchange is located, hence the name.
I knew they were SUPER yachts, but seriously, it's TRAPPED London. I'm impressed. :-) Running 400+ Volts a couple of feet above the water looks a little bit sporty. Have the insulation cut somewhere and the line drop a few feet, and I wouldn't want to be swimming right beside it, not that I ever would be. Yeah, I've watched some of the barge home videos, not for me I don't think, but kind of interesting. A few of them were actually quite nice inside, but they are pretty seriously cramped. Space wise, it would definitely qualify as a tiny home, I would guess. Also, you can change your address fairly easily, IIRC, as you said after I wrote this. Just pay a berth somewhere else. That's pretty cool. I'm not convinced ANYBODY has much influence over Vlad POOTler, but if they are part of the govt mechanism they probably should be sanctioned. It's not like Svetlana secretary is going to own one of these. You can be fairly well certain that a lot of embezzlement has paid for those things. And Putin is the master of that, in the Russian sphere. It's pretty funny when you think about it, shooting himself in his own pointed head. He seems to be a master of that, too.
High voltage shore connections usually have a ground fault interruption guard. A bigger danger is ‘stray current leakages’ where there is a polarity difference in the grounding. It happens most often in cheap or poorly maintained Marinas.
Seems like if the owner really wanted to leave he could bring a court case to be heard by a judge to force the government to show evidence why his boat is "detained". There has to be some reason why this hasn't been done.
not if the government is braking the law because they decided they can ! UK/USA and most of the west is turning into USSR/CCP this is how they used to take other peoples stuff and gift them to them self or people they know !
No, for the simple reason the since 1st March 2022 the government has the power to impound any vessels or aircraft that are in any way connected to Russia.
Hah I was wondering about Phi recently, this answers that one! I suspect they're holding it because it's valuable, it's in UK waters, and it's easier to detain it than it is to let it go and try to get it back later. There was *probably* some suspicion against the owner but as you say either they are having difficulty proving it, it's taking significant time to 'get all their ducks in a row' to have a watertight case *or* they don't have proper cause and are trying to find one. I suppose the last and least likely option is that they have identified the owner as a threat or risk in a way they do not wish to make public because it has some security implication if it is known. Regardless it is an odd one, and it does seem a little unfair that, as far as we know, the vessel is being detained without a true cause and due process. It does seem most likely that they arrested it as a reactionary measure and are now looking to 'save face' and retroactively justify it since it would perhaps be embarrassing to admit there was no initial cause. I always find it unfortunate when governments or agencies do things that way arround, since in my view there is nothing wrong with acting first when they have the opportunity and then apologising later if it was uncalled for and unjustified, particularly where there will be no lasting harm after the fact. If it turns out Phi's owner really is 'clean' then it is a shame they did not just arrest the yacht, realise the mistake and then say "sorry we got this one wrong but we were acting out of an abundance of caution" that's a far better look in my eyes. I'll wait until the situation is resolve to pass final judgement though, there are still quite a lot of unknowns so it's hard to take a strong position other than "I hope they do what's right and fair"
I believe that the British government has intelligence information justifying the seizure of the Phi. Presumably the owner could contest the seizure in a British court but doesn't because the British government has threatened to make the intelligence information public if he does so. So the yacht remains seized and the owner is complicit in the current situation. He values his public reputation more than temporary use of his boat.
I would guess the owner may have breached some currency regulations (e.g., unauthorized transfers) which they don’t want to disclose publicly (they don’t want to have to show how they got this information at this time) but which the owner can’t contest.
@@pagejackson1207 The way I look at it is for whatever reason, HMG has sanctioned it, even if the owner hasn't been placed on US or EU sanctions lists. Why that might be is a bit of a mystery, and one of the problems with the sanctions process. Like how lawful it really is to deny someone their property without a reasonable chance to appeal against the seizure. Not allowing this just seems to go against basic rights to a fair trial or justice. I think it's made more complicated if sanctioned individuals can't get legal representation because lawyers can't do business with sanctioned individuals. I have no idea who the owner is, but this must be racking up a lot of costs and potential compensation.
@@brolohalflemming7042 No doubt about the costs incurred but if the owner is a billionaire I assume that the costs are incidental. I would be surprised if English law didn't encompass some due process protections against unlawful seizures. Also, in the U.S. attorneys are ethically required to take a certain number of "pro bono" cases - that is cases without pay. I would be very surprised if an barrister wouldn't take this as a "pro bono" case just for the publicity. In this instance the most logical reason for the owner's failure to seek relief in the British courts is because he doesn't want certain information to become public.
Yet again, another great video. Well composed and with lovely aerial shots. I'm surprised that the news channels don't use more of your media. How about asking the owner of Phi if he would like to give you a tour and an interview? I'd like to hear his point of view and it might help his case. His lawyers might be able to put you in contact with him.
If the owner of Phi, does indeed have Putins "ear", then he should be sanctioned, and his assets seized- Just like the son of an ex KGB agent, that Johnson made a life peer after his illegal trip to italy! (do your own research!)
Great video thanks, I used to belong to the docklands fishing association, some of the yachts that used to moor up were simply mindblowing, how the other half live.
Interesting Vid, I think MY Phi is one of the nicest yachts you have featured. Love the colour, so much blanket white in the yacht world. Stay safe and enjoy your time in Blighty.
The white is a temperature control to help keep the yachts cooler in the summers. I agree there is a lot of it used but it does actually serve a purpose other than aesthetics.
Superb production values on this one. And, to be fair, the values have been increasing over time - well done ! Maybe, one day, we will learning the reason for the "arrest"/"detained". Personally, I suspect some civil service lackey (or low level minister) was over-eager and now the powers that be cannot back down. Alternatively, they could be investigating money laundering etc. Well done on this video and all the others you do.
If you live in the UK you will know and understand the dreaded Council Tax. Except, if you live aboard a floating Barge and/or Narrowboat, your local council does not have any legal authority to levy council tax. Hence there is none, but there are mooring fees and meters for water and electricity. Drives local governments insane. And this channel missed a celebrity owned and lived-in barge boat. Idris Elba, Actor and Golden Globe winner, lives aboard his barge boat in Canary Wharf when in London. No Council Tax for him 😅
Thanks for some more great content. My question is are you back in your home country for holiday or do you have to update your Passports / Seamanship paperwork? in any case hope you are well and have a great home visit. Thanks again for all your great content, my wife often listens to the Hi welcome back to the channel. intro, she knows I am quite at my leisure and tries hard not to interrupts me when she hears that. Lol. (:
Great to hear from the northern command center, and the latest storms snow packs, The San Luis reservoir near Los Bano’s ca. is near full, it was at its lowest level in several years prior to this year’s rainy season, I never seen that reservoir so low, but once again I’m happy that it’s near the overflow reservoir with lots more rain on the way, SoCal is seeing snow in places unheard of and the normal places are getting their fair share of snow.
Are you sure you’re on the right channel? This is about super yachts and sanctions and your’e talking about the weather in one of the 3 countries on Earth that still uses imperial measurement. Lol.
To answer your question... I wholeheartedly think Phi should be released, given that there are no sanctions against the owner. I'm sure some government entity has been looking for some reason to sanction the owner and justify their unreasonable behavior. They've hadvalmost a year now, and nothing. Wasn't Phi there originally to receive some award or some kind of honor? If I'm not confused... I can go back and check, but if that is the case it just makes it seem all the more wrong. The rest of the video was absolutely wonderful. The barges with their flower pots and obvious personalized touches are so interesting. I had no idea you could live on a barge almost like in an apartment. I also am a true fan of your walking around explaining things and showing yacht and marina scenery. Keep on doing what you do, and enjoy everything as much as you can, right to the maximum.
Good video! I think the UK government wanted to look like they were doing something and acted to soon in arresting PHI. Now they don't know how to get out of the situation. The yacht's owner is going to have plenty of grounds to sue. He might just get a new boat out of it.
@@firstlast-ml8di The British Government has no such protections. So any and all of the 'Shell' companies can sue the Crown and any government agencies involved.
I don’t see how anyone can pass judgement on the arrest of Fie without knowing the facts about the reason for the arrest. Even though the owner has not been placed on any sanction list, it’s possible that while investigating the owner that some other illegality was discovered. Of course it’s possible that the UK found some lame excuse to arrest the vessel and used it just because the owner is Russian. The bottom line is that we don’t know.
"just because the owner is Russian" this is the truth and from what i have seen Brits hate Russians ! they hate people soon as they find out that someone is Russian (have experience in hotel side)
@@TheCashman007 what you say may very well be true. The Brits are no more immune to ethnic hatred than any other country. But without the absolute facts of the issue, we cannot say for sure. I have mo doubt that there is a great deal of blatant prejudice towards all things Russian in the hospitality industry. There would be few countries that do not exhibit this behavior at this point. Still, we don’t have all the facts here.
@@katiedotson704 Yes, i agree with you ! but this thing is getting somewhat creepy when they are now doing it in a Gov level also from what i can find out all the rich people who are not from the west are puling money out of west /SWIFT a lot of businesses from the yachting side may go down with it ! all do to this "9 year old" anger !
@@TheCashman007 While I have little concern for the yacht owners as individuals, I do understand that it is upon their shoulders that the yachting rides. When businesses falter the entire employee base suffers. Most of the employees are specialized to some degree or another and finding employment outside the industry they have dedicated their education and dedication to is making it so difficult for thousands of people we will never hear about. You are 100% correct that this entire mess can be traced back to a little man with the emotional IQ of a 9 year old. But the entire Russian population needs to accept their part as they have chosen to listen to this Mad Man. I have listened to a number of Russian POWs being interviewed by some Ukrainian journalists. The initial questions were very basic, name, home region, military history, etc. Followed by when and where they entered Ukraine and how they were captured. Then they were asked about their opinion of the war, if it was justified, was it a special operation or a war. Opinions varied and many had been told that the Ukrainian people would welcome them. But the real eye opener were the majority that said they do not vote as they know nothing of politics. Several just shrugged and said Putin is their leader so what can they do? Over and over I heard them say, “I just want to go home and live my life.” It appears that they people of Russia just want someone to look after the country, make all the decisions, and not involve the citizens. These people are too damn lazy to think and participate in what is happening in their own country. They have exactly what they deserve. Unfortunately the mess they have helped to create has been foisted upon the rest of the world.
It strikes me there must be something else going on here. As an influential man, he could quite easily have challenged the arrest in court, but the only action he's apparently tried to bring is against Grant Shapps for calling him an oligarch! That was last August and I can't find anything (after a quick look only) about the actual court case, if it's happened yet of course. It implies there may be reasons we're not aware of, which may come out if he issues a legal challenge. If so, he may actually get himself added to the sanctions lists, so keeping it as quiet as possible may well be in his interests?
If the sanctions are lawful then the application of those sanctions need to be lawfully enforced. If Phi and her owner are not on any list, then she should not be held. Simple! I do hope the English government is paying all costs associated with the impound - mooring, crew, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, utilities, servicing and compensation to the owner for the illegal arrest.
Is the blue paint faded in places or is that how it is supposed to look? Love your videos. Never miss one. Thank you for sharing a part of the world I’ll never see.
That is one of those questions that makes you say that the UK government should not hold it. Only because most of us (ME) conservative distrust any liberal Government. But then the UK government must have a valid reason that we are not privileged to.
Regarding Phi, it's always possible the vessel was omitted from the sanctions list in error and since the owner is Russian, it's likely he and Phi should have been on it. I think the gov't in the UK is being cautious for that reason. Better to keep her there than be unable to secure her later after she escapes. Smart. You're the best, E. Great admiration and love from the United States to you.
I'm happy I got to tour this vessel before it left the warf and also happy that it was delivered to the customer before all the actions against the russians because that would really have sucked for the warf. Anyway: I hope it gets to move soon, just sad to see it just gathering dust there.
living on a boathouse in London is EXPENSIVE. Mooring fees are £10k+/year in most central locations. Add to it the fact that you have to pay to get your sewage removed as well, regular maintenance, a premium on electricity and no option for gas heating... In many cases it works out cheaper and more comfortable to get an apartment.
Im not sure why this was recommended to me as I was not only born and raised in the desert but still live in the desert, haha! But it was very interesting so I'm here to stay I guess! Subbed.
At this time, I wouldn’t cut Russians any slack. If there is the remotest chance that the owner of this yacht could influence Putin or his cronies, the only way to pressure him is to seize assets. Sell the boat and rebuild an apartment block in Kherson.
Phi is one of the prettiest yachts- color is impressive and so is the design

And Putin is the master of that, in the Russian sphere. It's pretty funny when you think about it, shooting himself in his own pointed head. He seems to be a master of that, too.
High voltage shore connections usually have a ground fault interruption guard. A bigger danger is ‘stray current leakages’ where there is a polarity difference in the grounding. It happens most often in cheap or poorly maintained Marinas.
Barge living looks intriguing!
I think David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) has a 'house barge/floating recording studio' in those parts. Now that would be a tour for the channel.
Abso-bloody-lutly
I love the Narrow Boats that cruise the Cuts in the UK. Would love to have one and live in the UK.
first video I’ve seen of yours here, belter, nice to hear a fellow scouser on YT!! Keep the bits up lad is right
Seems like if the owner really wanted to leave he could bring a court case to be heard by a judge to force the government to show evidence why his boat is "detained". There has to be some reason why this hasn't been done.
I believe esysman has stated in earlier videos that there is s court case but the govt is slowing it down.
not if the government is braking the law because they decided they can !
It’s been a year, I know efficient government is an oxymoron
nice walk
Phi is a beautiful boat. Truly amazing.
That’s a lot of boat for 50 mil. Looks at least 3 times that.
Nice vid
Superb production values on this one. And, to be fair, the values have been increasing over time - well done ! Maybe, one day, we will learning the reason for the "arrest"/"detained". Personally, I suspect some civil service lackey (or low level minister) was over-eager and now the powers that be cannot back down. Alternatively, they could be investigating money laundering etc. Well done on this video and all the others you do.
liked yhis one alot , thought the barges looked pretty nice
If you live in the UK you will know and understand the dreaded Council Tax.
Except, if you live aboard a floating Barge and/or Narrowboat, your local council does not have any legal authority to levy council tax. Hence there is none, but there are mooring fees and meters for water and electricity. Drives local governments insane.
And this channel missed a celebrity owned and lived-in barge boat. Idris Elba, Actor and Golden Globe winner, lives aboard his barge boat in Canary Wharf when in London. No Council Tax for him 😅
Council tax pays for things like sewage and water infrastructure. Boats don’t pay it but the boathouse/ marina on land sure do.
Never thought I’d see a local connection on this channel; Crown and Dicke’s Ohio home are about 15 minutes down the road from where I work.
Thank you for this great video!
my goodness what a gorgeous yacht
The boat is really lovely looking and looks like she's moving or in movement styling
Great channel
There may be bigger or more expensive but for me Royal Huisman is a nice as it gets. This is my favorite motor powered yacht in the world.
Good video! I think the UK government wanted to look like they were doing something and acted to soon in arresting PHI. Now they don't know how to get out of the situation. The yacht's owner is going to have plenty of grounds to sue. He might just get a new boat out of it.
its registered in Caribbean to host of shell companies, but flies a Maltese flag.
@@firstlast-ml8di The British Government has no such protections. So any and all of the 'Shell' companies can sue the Crown and any government agencies involved.
How bizzare. I was on the same dock on Saturday. We must have just missed you.
beautiful area -
Phi is beautifuloe eye candy. And maybe that is enough reason. Really like the barge houses.
Great way of having your house in different cities.
Stumbles across this yacht a couple weeks ago by pure accident. It’s a beauty. Don’t know how I’ve somehow stumbled across a video on it as well now
me too!
PHI is beautiful
@@katiedotson704 Yes, i agree with you !
but this thing is getting somewhat creepy when they are now doing it in a Gov level
also from what i can find out all the rich people who are not from the west are puling money out of west /SWIFT
a lot of businesses from the yachting side may go down with it !
all do to this "9 year old" anger !
Over and over I heard them say, “I just want to go home and live my life.”
It appears that they people of Russia just want someone to look after the country, make all the decisions, and not involve the citizens.
You do get around cool video
Nice footage, would they have to pay to berth there and if so how would they do it
If the sanctions are lawful then the application of those sanctions need to be lawfully enforced. If Phi and her owner are not on any list, then she should not be held. Simple! I do hope the English government is paying all costs associated with the impound - mooring, crew, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, utilities, servicing and compensation to the owner for the illegal arrest.
Reef chief has been in Canary Wharf for a few months. I messaged you when it first appeared. Keep up the good reports.
Is the blue paint faded in places or is that how it is supposed to look? Love your videos. Never miss one. Thank you for sharing a part of the world I’ll never see.
Because London is a great city 🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️
That is one of those questions that makes you say that the UK government should not hold it. Only because most of us (ME) conservative distrust any liberal Government.
But then the UK government must have a valid reason that we are not privileged to.
It is a conservative that are in power in the UK. Liberal government = Conservatives in the U.K
Phi is one of the sexiest yachts ever.
It is absolutely not smart if the seizure of the boat is not lawful.
Given the volatile situation with Russia I think Phi is in a really safe place at the moment.
Subbed.
Suddenly I want to know all about downtown London barge living👍.
Phi is a beautiful boat, but I don't feel bad that it has been seized.
I remember when Your favourite yacht Octopus was there in 2012 for the London Olympic . I went down there and took a few photon of her
I think they were hiding from you. My office overlooks those yachts and I see people on deck all the time on both.
At this time, I wouldn’t cut Russians any slack. If there is the remotest chance that the owner of this yacht could influence Putin or his cronies, the only way to pressure him is to seize assets. Sell the boat and rebuild an apartment block in Kherson.
I thought this was going to be a Jago Hazard cross over at the beginning! 😂
I'm saying the pontoon is just an excuse. Like a football players grabbing their self after being brushed crying for a red card.
Great !
Great channel 👏 👍 👌 🙌
