When her father, Captain Crewe, goes off to fight in the Boer War, young Sara Crewe is placed into the care of Amanda Minchin, the head of an exclusive private school for girls. Sara lives a wonderful life of a privileged child and is quite happy in her surroundings. When her father is listed as missing in action however, her life goes from one of plenty to that of a poor house maid. Mrs. Minchin agrees to keep her on at the school, but in the absence of her tuition payments, she has to work for her keep.

I remember watching this when I was a little girl and it would make me cry every time because my dad was in the army for pretty much all of my childhood. I'm only 20 now! So if you oldsters think that people my age don't absolutely love these old movies, then you'd be wrong because this will never get old for me. 😊❤️❤️
My late father watched every Shirley Temple movie made. I believe it was because they shared the same birthday- April 23, 1928.😊
She indeed was the greatest Hollywood child actress and won the hearts of everyone during the Great Depression era of the 1930s.Her popularity as a child actress surpassed even that of the King Clark Gable and Gary Cooper.
She was also the first Hollywood child star🙂

you know, in the 1995 movie version of a little princess becky (Vanessa Chester) and Sara (Liesel Matthews) poured ashes on black dirty soot on Miss Minchin (Eleanor Bron) and that was funnier then the original 1939 movie version of the little princess where Sara (Shirley Temple) put ashes and black dirty soot on Lavinia (Marcia Mae Jones).
One of my favorite Shirley films...she was a gift to the people living in her time and now in ours.
When Sarah gave little Becky those gifts. I started crying. Lawd..

When I was a kid, I never watched this all the way through, Shirley Temple movies would just pop up on TV so I never planned for it. But what I did remember about this movie was when that dear man leaves all those gifts.
I remember watching this as a kid in the 90s as my parents were both fans of Sherly Temple only now I appreciate her movies as an older person
Gen-X here, ditto in the 1970s (on WDRB-41 in Louisville). I remember the ash dumping and Queen Victoria scenes (which is why I'm here).
I can't count how many times I've watched this.
Watched it for my own entertainment, and also while introducing old movies to my students.
Considered that those movies are pushing a hundred years, they are exceptionally ahead of their time. Especially when you think of what ST did in the years after her movie career.
Lot of Hollywood people go into politics
Movie tech has come a long way since 1939, but they had full color (I guess 3-strip Technicolor was around 9 years old) and sound (10 years, ish) by then. By those two metrics, we could call The Little Princess a fully modern film, tech-wise. People think of Technicolor in terms of The Wizard of Oz and its garish, pushed color, but the point was you could select your dyes and get any color onscreen that you wanted, at the expense of pouring hundreds of candlepower of light onto the actors, enough to melt makeup and make your actors nearly faint.
First time watching this movie…my parents always told me I reminded them of Shirley and I see it now…I wish I grew up to be the actress I had always wanted to be…this movie is so sad but is giving me motivation

This is one of the first movies I remember seeing. I'd watch it whenever it was on our new, fancy, TV and I watched it again tonight. I always loved the part where she woke up and her dingy room has been all fancied up and she and her friend had the beautiful robes and delicious food. But of course, nothing could beat finding her father or when he finally realized.... it's SARA!
Watching in 2024, age 55, remembering seeing it on WDRB-41 in Louisville in the 70s when I was about the same age ST was in the film, Miss Minchin appears, and I'm like, "Yeah, I remember that beyotch." Here for the ash dumping scene and "Queen Victoria". I guess, between this, Tom Brown's School Days, and The Tomorrow People, and Children of the Stones, this was my first impression of what England must be like. I've since been there, and I was more or less right.

I really didn't find this version of Minchin to be so cruel and cold hearted as the other adaptations. Strict yes, but not as cruel and vain.

The movie is very good but I wish there was something more added to the ending of this movie. ✌️☺️ But sadly it will never happen. Anyhow, I just have to be content and happy to see Shirley Temple in this legacy she left behind.

I know Lavinia seems like she’s unfairly rude and mean to Sara. But if you actually analyze it it’s not really all her fault. In a way they kind of provoked her. Like for example when her and Jessie were giggling at 7:34 when the girls first met Sara and they said “how do you do” to her and Sara replied “I’m very well Thankyou”, honestly it didn’t seem like they were giggling trying to make fun of her. It seemed like they were giggling in kind of a friendly matter. But miss Menchin misinterpreted and got mad at them telling them “that will do”. Then at 7:56 the comment that the little blonde girl made. Then at breakfast miss menchin just took Lavinias seat away for Sara to sit there. So in a way the others they provoked lavania against Sara
