    In this video Daniel and Mick explore some basic concepts around getting a better solo tone.
    What is a better solo tone? Obviously it’s an extremely subjective topic once you bring personal likes/dislikes into play, but the one thing on which we can all surely agree is that as a very basic start point, a good solo tone begins with ‘one that can be heard’.
    By contrast a ‘bad’ solo tone is one that can’t be heard, and there are many of us who have been in that situation where you step on the next pedal to make your tone soar… only to find that it just crashes! That is where we begin.
    Throughout the video we touch on the areas of gain, EQ and relative wetness of your effects in the context of being heard for that all important solo.
    Interesting points of go-to bits

    20:55 - the greatest lesson I have ever learned on TPS. The fact that you can have a glorious sound in a vacuum of a single instrument / rig. But when in the presence of the dynamic of a band that sound is lost. That was an amazing revelation. When the instrument /rig is using nearly the entire audio spectrum in a bedroom sound, you can't cut through the mix of those other frequencies in a live band setting. ( search - Interactive Frequency Chart). Thank you TPS. This is a Master Class!

      I'd say the SM57 is a "regular people" mic. It's £85, that's not a lot of money for an industry standard microphone.

    Interesting observation I've made over the last 34 years of playing in bands.
    The mid boosting, in my opinion, is more effective in bigger bands with a rhythm guitar player and a keyboard.
    However, in a trio setup, (bass, drums, and guitar), the mid boosting didn't give me such favorable results. It made the whole band sound weak and thin during the solos. I always found it necessary to slightly boost the mids, but I also had to boost the lows too. Otherwise I would get lost in the mix.
    Am I alone with this opinion?
    What do you guys think? The difference between playing in a trio as opposed to being in a bigger band.

    • @joequintana5546
      @joequintana5546 5 років тому

      By the way, most of the time I play without effects.
      On very special occasions I'll add a wah and an analog delay which I'll only activate for solos. And I set it to where you barely hear it.

      What settings do you use? I have a Fulldrive 3 too and thought it would make a great solo boost. Do you use the main over drive and kick the boost in for solos? Or set up both to use as 2 different sounding boosts for solos?

    • @zaqintosh
      @zaqintosh 8 років тому

      I've got one too and can get some decent sounds out of it. Can I ask how you set it and use it for rhythm versus lead? Do you use the 90s mode toggle or the asym wide mode?

    • @GavinMcLeod
      @GavinMcLeod 8 років тому +1

      +pjlenny22 for solos I'll kick in the boost side set to about 9 o'clock. It's got a ton of headroom and I find if you use it with another od pedal you can get some great tones. The left side I use in the wide mode for some squishy rhythm tones and I'll use comp cut for a more crunchy boost. Hopefully this helps!

    • @GavinMcLeod
      @GavinMcLeod 8 років тому +1

I was really hoping to hear the Cali76 as a boost after the carpe diam or angry charlie. Just a suggestion I think it would sound awesome as a lead tone. I use my Barber Tone Press for this purpose after my Small Fry I have a suspicion that the 76 after the Carpe or Charlie would be fantastic. So curious.

    I never really dissect things into bits and pieces. I just trying to digest by ear, what possible steps my favorite musician has gone through. One of many that struck my ears was our dearest Andy Timmons. I noticed how his dirty solo tones are different than his rhythm or clean section. I noticed, midrange, reverb, echo (delay), and sustain were there. Sustain, be it with compressor pedal, some OD pedal, I wasn't too picky (eventually I used dirty channel of the amp, OD pedal or BOSS Compressor). I managed to create my own liking and use it through several shows. BUT THIS VIDEO YOU GUYS DID, quite explain and clearly give me something more to think about. Thanks a lot.

    One of the best videos you guys have done, congrats. I always find myself opening up a vid, intending to watch for just a short period, skipping around, but often get sucked in and watch the whole video. If it isn't beating a dead horse yet, and you guys are wanting to do more gain staging focused, I'd love to see ones about compressor/od/boost placement (comp pre or post od?, how boost interact with comps, doubling up comps, etc.), or good use for speaker attenuators and comparison of popular/quality models (even though they are not really pedals). Thanks for the time, energy, and compassion you guys put into this, it's much appreciated.

    I recently tried a mini tube screamer set to the extreme with volume all the way, tone around 2 o clock, and drive set to lowest, going into the angry charlie, with bass at 3 o clock to bring back some lows, mid turn down to 9 o clock because of the tube screamer, high around 1 o clock, gain at 9 o clock and level at 2/3 o clock to push the amp. I find this is a great sound that can be fully adjusted depending on the guitar/amp.

I may not have the exact same set up you guys, but I try my best to apply what you show to my rig with what I have and I have noticed a considerable improvement...even my band mates have noticed. It may have taken me me a while but like Dan said "it's the one moment where you can stand up and be counted and be heard" and all the little things you talked about have worked for me! That Pedal Show During a NAMM video with the Andertons channel Dan mentioned with the Captain that you would be doing a show on how the "old" amps and pedals worked with each other...kind of a total vintage recreation if you will. Amps with two master knobs and a footswitch that switches between the two are amazing for when you want a dynamic solo that the crowd can hear. One click of a button can turn a balanced rhythm sound into a solo tone that stands over the rest of the band.

    In regard to gain. I am a big muff fanatic. I assumed the best thing to do was set the sustain at 100%. I tried that for a while. It was ... fine. The real game changer was adding overdrives before and also after the big muff and rolling the sustain (“gain knob”) way down actually - suddenly this whole spectrum of upper and lower mids just blew up the big muff in the best possible way. Rhythm, solos, doesn’t matter. Learning the importance of mids was like getting a new instrument.

  • @Grant_Ferstat

    Great stuff as always guys..
    Even broader than solo tones...tones within a musical setting. The main thing I aim for in life is to be what I call
    'tonally appropriate'.
    In my case, I'm not playing against another electric guitarist but a singer who uses alt tuned DI's acoustic. His parts formed the basis of the creation of those songs so I have to be aware not to eat up too much of his sonic space. Over the years I've been playing with him I've evolved a tone which is rich and organic enough to please me without treading on his toes. Seems these days I hear a LOT of bands where people are competing in the same sonic spaces.

    After watching once again, the tip from Daniel regarding the tone is amazing. Therefore in order to properly boost for solos I may be searching for a compressor that I may change the tone, just as Daniel said, reducing the low end and focusing on mids and a little treble for solos. Amazing how the beautiful rhythm tone sounded muddy and obscure when only boosted on volume. But after changing the tone it really combined and pronounced better the lead guitar without a need to increase the volume too much. I liked that. Great tips guys. GREAT tips. Keep it up!! Cheers from Brazil

    Love the show - you cover all sorts, including a reminder of the fundamentals that can get forgotten when experimenting!
    With our shared love of pedals comes a common problem - the pre and post solo step dance to turn effects on and off.
    I would love to see a shoot out or even just explanation in the pro's and con's of pedal switchers/ loopers and the best way to go about setting them up, using them live, budget vs. top wallop, patch cable quality etc.
    Keep on rocking Mick and Dan! ✌️

    I never thought to put an over-drive AFTER a higher gain pedal because I had always thought of high gain pedals as amp-in-a-box effects and ODs go in front of the amp. But it's brilliant. Especially since I like lower gain, slightly scooped rhythm sounds. Now i can get my mid boost, extra gain, and volume for solos with my Tube Screamer after the distortion or fuzz. Excellent!

  • @MrJoeyBoombotz
    @MrJoeyBoombotz 8 років тому +2

    That is the best modern electric guitar lesson ever!! Kudos, gentlemen. The scooped sound just doesn't work in every context. It works in very few. Knowing intuitively how to get the right amounts of mids and compression is key.
