  • The Shadow and Integrating our Spiritual and Psychological Work
    David Richo, Ph.D., M.F.T.
The Analytical Psychology Club of San Francisco
We all contain creative qualities and powers that we have kept hidden out of fear and self-doubt. Our Shadow includes all that we abhor about ourselves and all the wonderful attributes that we have disavowed or denied. We project the negativities onto others as strong dislike. We project our own positive potential onto others as awe and admiration. We do not have to keep projecting our own powers onto others but can reclaim them and use them mindfully and imaginatively. Then foes become allies; dark angles become archways of light. We learn to hold ourselves with loving-kindness. We learn to act lovingly toward others whose dark sides may be disturbing us. We learn to work through fears and projections.
David Richo, Ph.D., M.F.T., is psychotherapist, writer, and workshop leader. He teaches at a variety of places including Esalen and Spirit Rock Buddhist Center. He shares his time between Santa Barbara and San Francisco, California. Dave combines psychological and spiritual perspectives in his work. His book is Shadow Dance (Shambhala, 1999). I value David Richo's thoughtful and deep wisdom. I believe his work and insights on the ego will be teaching us for centuries to come. His writings/thoughts always contain for me a beautifully seamless synthesis of mind~heart~spirit. An almost aesthetic balance of the psychological, intellectual, and spiritual.

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR SCHOLARSHIP!!!
IF SOCIETY WOULD UTILIZE THIS SPIRITUAL PSYCHOLOGY TO HELP US HEAL DURING THESE TUMULTUOUS TIMES, WE MIGHT SPARE OURSELVES DAMNATION OF OUR SPECIES.
FEW OF US ONLY WANT TO TAKE MORE TIME TO JUDGE AND LESS TIME TO THINK (OR EMPATHIZE) THAT WE ARE ALL EACH OTHER IN SOME OTHER SPACE, PLACE, AND TIME.
THANKS, AGAIN, DR!!! I LOOK FORWARD TO "ATTENDING YOUR CLASS" MORE!!!

Hi everyone, we recently interviewed Dr. Richo on our podcast, called Angel Empire. We interviewed him about his book How to Be an Adult in Relationships and finding love in a late-capitalist society. We cover the mindfulness trend, Eastern vs. Western approaches to finding happiness, phases of relationships, when to get married, our 'shadow side', ego, and more.
(Angel Empire is a comedic commentary on life under late-stage capitalism that examines culture, politics, tech, work, and leisure. Listen anywhere you get your podcasts. Warning: explicit content.)

Thank you for your insights which I greatly value. I just wanted to say though that I remembered when he was saying that God doesn't punish people for their sins, that I heard another spiritual teacher explain the simple truth, that we all suffer by our sins, or acting on our dark impulses. Also, I think reconciliation is a good thing, but it should be applied to all transgressions, rather than only in that one particular instance, forgiving Nazis in South Africa, as, forgiving psychopaths but punishing the rest of the population for lesser crimes, makes it a very uneven playing field, and therefore an injustice.

listening to this valuable talk by the speaker in June 2021 - I can appreciate the Covid-induced zoom talks more because of the audience noises such as coughing sneezing etc. that distracts from what the talk is talking about -- the zoom talks allow more concentration on the speaker and what the speaker is saying that is important to be said and heard and listened to - absent the audience's

When evil doesn't know limits, at the end, enablers will have to face the consequences too. Dark secrets are secrets for a while, but then they become visible. At the end, things come out to light. So do enablers.
