  • Eurasian Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) are the largest hawks in Europe. Until recently the bird was known under the name Northern Goshawk, but since 2023 this “superspecies” was split into American Goshawk (Accipiter atricapillis) for birds found roughly in the USA, Canada and Mexico vs. Eurasian Goshawk, roughly found in Europe and Asia.
The Eurasian Goshawk is slightly larger than American Goshawk and is a fierce and powerful bird that can kill prey larger than itself.
The bird in this video in a young bird (easily identified by the dark streakings on its chest and belly), that came to a puddle of water for a drink before it quickly disappeared to hunt the nearby feral pigeons again.

Eurasian Goshawk is the largest true hawk in the world, but to avoid a semantic discussion, I used "largest in Europe". Half the world also calls buteos hawks and then you probably end up with Ferruginous Hawk as the largest.
