  • Roger Waters - Newport Folk Festival July 24, 2015. Filmed in HD 1080p, in the rain, whilst trying to protect my camera from the deluge so forgive the shaky stuff!

    I love that Roger is doing his solo stuff again. It's so underrated.
    I'd love him to do a tour with no Floyd at all.

      Kevin Canavan I saw K.A.O.S. On the Road on Sept. 17, 1987, in Phoenix, AZ.
      It was a powerful piece of theatre! The available videos don't do it justice. Roger did some Pink Floyd songs, but they were all wrapped up in the _Radio K.A.O.S._ concept. Jim Ladd (the DJ) and "Billy" (the synthesized speech) handled the narrative aspect of the show, so Roger didn't have to do any acting. The show worked so much better than the album!
      It sounds like the Pros and Cons tour (1984-85) was the great lost conceptual show that nobody captured on video. He gave the audience an all-Floyd set first, then did the whole _Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking_ album in the second set. Based on photos and descriptions I've seen, it sounds like the Pros and Cons performance was a complete package, with great visual and sound effects, including a new puppet designed by the legendary Gerald Scarfe.

      +Caredve I would gladly watch a tribute band try to recreate Pros and Cons, if they based the visual presentation on what Roger originally did.
      It's incredibly difficult to sing, though. Songs like "Running Shoes", "Go Fishing", and the bridge to "Every Stranger's Eyes". I think he was using pre-recorded vocal tracks for those high parts, based on the bootlegs I've heard. A lot of those songs were pitched at the very top of his range.

      It's true. Sometimes people tend to forget how hard are Waters' vocal parts. If you see Run like hell live 1980 you'll see Roger kicking Gilmours' ass at the vocals. However I'm not pretty sure if there were supporting vocal tracks back in 84-85 tours. Actually you can hear some little mistakes specially on Go fishing (Sweedish Neurotica bootleg)

      +Caredve "Go Fishing" is one I _know_ used pre-recorded vocals, because I heard a bootleg called "Thanks for the Ride", and in the ending sequence of the song ("And so leaving all our hopes / And dreams / To the wind / And the rain ..."), the backup girls are singing it, but Roger's vocal is so much out of sync, it would be impossible to sing that way. It's just a total mess.
      Those parts go as high as one octave above middle-C. Most male singers would have to go falsetto to hit that, but Roger had this eerie (and unhealthy, but mostly eerie) way of straining up there, and shouting through his nose melodically. Really, if a classical voice teacher had trained a young Roger Waters, we would _not_ have all the Pink Floyd songs the way they are today, because his technique was _very_ unhealthy for his vocal cords. I think it was that tour specifically that burned him out. Unlike all his future tours, Roger tried to sing just about every song himself at first.

    Roger lost his timing but GE Smith got him back on track. That's live music. Wonderful.

    I have watched other recordings of this performance and just now noticed Roger missed his mark to come back in with the line that starts, "Hey bartender...". He comes in early and immediately G.E. Smith signals for the sound guys to check Roger's ear piece monitor. My Morning Jacket keep chugging along and before you know it, Roger has made a recovery! True professionals!

      darkstarflashes That's a problem when you're playing to a click track or a sequencer -- once you get onto the wrong beats, you can get stuck, whereas if you're just playing as a band, you can get back to where you once belonged.

      I am quite sure there's no click track here. Why would there be? It's a pretty stripped-down performance - no video, no backing track, no sound effects, no light show

  • @danielmahoney3237
    @danielmahoney3237 8 років тому +8

    Genius. And I think GE was motioning to the rhythm section to get back on track after Roger's early entry. Was motioning to his ear to tell them to listen to where Roger was - nothing to do with playing to a click as Ben contends.

      If you're referring to me, I don't think _this_ performance was synced to a click track. But his major solo tours were, and had to be, to fit the various visual effects.

    Hah, I am pretty sure that is me saying "I think this is the Bravery of Being out of Range" and "yes... yes!" in the beginning of the video. And it was! Such a great song...
