Prawns Balchao | Camarao Balchao by Chef Rego from Goa

- Goas famous and ever so popular prawn balchao. I have broken down this legendary recipe to make it easy for everyone at home. A prawn dish that has evolved over the ages from being a pickled form to an everyday preparation. Prawn Balchao basically means prawns cooked in spice. Do check it out and try it.
Ingredients
White Prawns (Deshelled & Deveined) - 300 grams
Onions Chopped - 2 nos
Turmeric Powder - Half tea spoon
Chopped garlic - 4 to 5 flakes
Chopped ginger - Half inch in size
Red chillies dry - 4 to 5 nos
Pepper corns - Half tea spoon
Cumin seeds - Half tea spoon
Cinnamon sticks - Half inch
Cloves - 5 to 6 nos
Green cardamom - 4 to 5 nos
Toddy vinegar - 4 to 5 table spoons
Curry leaves - 1 table spoon
Sugar - 1 table spoon
Dry shrimp powder - 2 table spoons
Salt to taste
Oil to fry

Quintessential goan balchao! I recently saw a program on Epic, where chef Rego cooked a great soup( the name escapes my memory), a prawn dish and my fave chicken cafreal. Chef Ranveer Brar was the host anchor. I could gauge how much chef Rego is held in high esteem. Even at this advanced age, chef Rego hasn't lost his magical touch.

Ah ha! So there is a link between Goan Balchao and Malaysian Belacan!! I suspected there might be but I couldn't find much info about it. There must have been a lot of ships going back and forth between Goa and Malaka during the Portuguese occupation of both regions. I'm sure lots of food travelled back and forth as well.
