You my dear are a LIFE SAVER! Not knowing the amount of servings has "haunted" me for a while. This was such a helpful video and I feel more empowered knowing what to charge per serving and the amount of cake being served. Thank you so so much! This video is going in my playlist. 😄
omg...thank you. I can't express how much you have helped me the past month alone. this video is a homerun. now I can stop hurting my arm muscles rolling out fondant for a 12" cake. NO MORE 12" CAKES FOR ME...If I can avoid it. it would also make pricing easier. As Arnie would say, ain't nobody got time for that. lol
Thank you so much for sharing this information. oh my gosh... how many times have I sat here trying to figure this out.... Great video. and I am not a novice cake decorator... I have been stressed for years on this subject... soo Thank you! Love all your videos I have watched a lot of them to get the how to's. You are so precise and right on with your information and the way you present.
You're very welcome Maryann! I'm glad you found it helpful. I used to struggle with this a lot. Thank you for the great feedback on our tutorials. That means a lot. God bless you. :)
This is AMAZING! Thank you!! I have just started making cakes for friends and family and I have been trying to figure out what size of cake to make to fit their needs. I have been searching the web to try to figure this out and all the resources on cake cutting I have come across do not mention how many layers the cake has! To a cake "newbie" not mentioning how many layers is very confusing because as you mentioned in your video the number of layers decreases the serving size! So thank you!!! Now I can choose cake sizes with confidence!!
Laura no sabes cuanto nos ayudas con todos tus video, fotos, tutorials, ect! Eres muy especial, muchisimas gracias por compartir con nosotros todos tus conocimientos, que Dios los Bendiga siempre!!
24!!!... the cameraman says...I love that he had your back and he was paying attention...this was extremely helpful... years ago I saw a video of you making the edges sharp on cakes...I was still an amateur and now to run into another video of yours....I have advanced...no classes..just 15 years of practice from my teens years and kept going...thank you...will definitely take this information and apply to my future Baking /Event business.. ( fingers crossed ). :) :)
I just started making cakes and was going crazy with all the charts available.Thank you so much for sharing! My next youtube video watching adventure is your Cake Biz videos. You guys are amazing!!! God bless you and your family! :-)
Very useful! I've always went for baking generous cakes and giving more portions just in case it wasn't enough, but it was always a rough idea. Now I could still be generous, but I'll have a definite idea of how many portions the cakes will yield. Thanks a million!
This video is helpful, thanks for sharing. I think a lot of ppl only know how to cut cakes the traditional triangle slices. How would they know how to cut a big cake differently?
You're very welcome Ruby! I'm not sure. That's a great question! LOL. I've only ever sliced a cake in triangles. That I believe is the customary way, especially for the typical type of birthday cakes I make. Thank you for watching! :)
😘👍❤ Thank you very much Krazy Kool Cakes and Designs for this cake serving Size made it much way easier for me to understand the servings for each size of cake. Thanks a Bunch for the BiG Help👍🤗😘🤗😘❤❤❤
Thanks for this great tutorial Laura!! I make my own cutting diagram as well to give to friends if I'm not able to stay and cut the cakes I make for them. It use to kill me when I showed them how to cut it and the next time they butcher the servings.. Lol. The diagram was a better aid! Every designated cake cutter at a party should have this tool!
Hi Marianne! Glad you thought so! If a customer is requesting 20-25 servings then I'll tell them it will need to be a two tiered cake consisting of an 8" and a 6" cake tier. I'll tell them that that will give them a "minimum of 25 servings" and I charge for the full 25 servings. I hope that helps and thanks for watching! :)
Very helpful, thank you. May I ask how much do you charge per serving? I realize it may vary from area to area and also by how involved the design may be....I'm just looking for a rough guide.
Love you Laura, glad to have you in my cake making life lol i pretty much just eyeballed it and scared to death. I know what my next project will be. Thank you
This is so helpful! I'm not used to thinking of wedding cakes being cut this way. It seems like most of the time they are cut in rectangular pieces. I had been confused because it seemed that the number of servings in a regular 8" 2 layer birthday cake, for example, would be totally different than the number of servings in an 8" tier of a wedding cake.; But your method seems to be the same for any type of cake, correct? This really seems to simplify the process. You are a wonderful teacher! Your tips make so much sense!
Hi Laura, Im loving your tutorials!! thank you so much. If you were to deliver this cake to a venue, how do you know what cake serving size does the kitchen staff use to cut and serve the cake? Do you give t them your serving guide? what about the size? for wedding there is like a standar size as well as for party size which is larger. How do you handle that with the venue? thanks
Thank you so much! So glad you're enjoying them! Our servings are pretty generous and our clients know exactly how many servings they can get out of our cakes. We've never been asked for a serving guide nor have we ever been asked by the venues we've delivered to how to slice up the cake. I guess we've been pretty blessed to not have any issues in that department. Our slices are usually 2" thick and roughly 5" to 5.5" in height. Our servings are the same for weddings and your typical celebration cakes. It's easier for us not to have different servings depending on what type of event it is. Makes life easier. I hope that helps and thank you for watching our videos! :)
So funny I saw this video today. I was just in the midst of researching serving sizes and became so overwhelmed. I too make my cakes pretty tall and was stuck trying to figure this out. So helpful!
Thank you for a very useful tutorial. How about if I need to get full wedges from a 9”x2”” round cake as I will be selling cakes to a coffee shop and as you know, in coffee shops, they always serve full wedges. I will be selling them carrot cakes with cheese frosting which is a double layered cake and sticky date cake with caramel sauce which will be of a single layer. What would be an acceptable size of each wedge in that case please? Thank you!
You're very welcome Laleh! Glad you found it useful. I think your best bet would be for you to provide them cake slice sizes that you yourself would be happy with. I hope that helps. :)
gracias laura yo vivo en san bernardino California pero soy de Argentina y les he recomendado tu canal me encanta tu dinámica ojala pronto lo puedas hacer traducido. muchas bendiciones.
laurapoopie Sorry, I think I worded my question incorrectly. How tall are your individual cake layers that you put together to make one tier that is 5" to 6" in height? Would you say about 1 1/2 inches for each layer and then you have your filling and dam between each layer to make each tier 5" to 6" in height?
You're welcome! Yes M'am, if they want that many servings I would make either just an 8" tier OR if they like the look of the tiered cake, I would make a small two tier cake consisting of a 6" and a 4". If the cake sizes are a bit bigger than what they what, I still charge them for all the servings. If they ONLY need say 14 and my 8" serves 16, I still charge them for all 16 servings. Know what I mean? Hope that helps. :)
hi honey. if fondant is used and decorations do u charge extra for designs separate from what the cake would come out if it was a simple icing cake? I always find myself struggling with this and in the past have not really charged what my work was worth
+jennifer wright Hi Jennifer! Yes, most definitely. I always suggest to come up with the cost of the cake alone with no decoration at all, and then figure out what you would charge individually for all the cake decorations then add those amounts together. That's the TRUE worth and value of your cake. Always charge what your work is worth and more importantly, your time. :)
Hi Laura, thank you for your tutorial this really helps! I was wondering if you can help me. I have to do a ball cake for 25 people and have no idea what size I should use. A 10 inch bowl? Thanks
Hi Laura! I just watched this video today! Great tutorial! I'm just wondering how you tell your clients how to cut the cakes to get the number of servings that you've based them on. Or, don't you worry about that?
Hello! I am loving your videos & would like to know if you price this 10" inch cake based on 24 0r 40 servings if I will be making the cake 5" tall? or do you ever make 4" tall & then charge only for 24 servings.
HI Elizabeth! I apologize for JUST NOW seeing this comment. I say a 10" cake with 3 full layers of cake provides a minimum of 35 servings. That's how I slice it myself. My cakes are typically 5.5" - 6" in height. I hope that helps and thank you for watching. :)
Hey Laura how r u. I wanted to ask u, how do u know when to do a 2 layered cake or a 3 layered cake. Do u ask the customer if they want a 2 or 3 layered cake? The reason why I'm asking is because I never know whether to make a 2 or 3 layered cake. I have a hard time deciding which one to do. I am starting to make cakes and I don't know when to do either or.....thank u in advance.
Hi, I usually do 2 layer cakes but I always use the 3 inch tall cake pan, so I always have 2 high cakes and perfeclty tall for decoration, if you are using 2 inch tall cake pann then I'll suggest do a 3 layered cake. Hope this helps.
What an awesome & helpful video Laura (& Arnie)!!! Thank you for sharing such wonderful information in such an easy way to understand sweetie ; ) My visitors are leaving this weekend so will contact you in the next couple of days about our collab!!
Yes I have FB page for my UA-cam stuff! - link here: facebook.com/pages/Mackandnorm/331645753596168 I also just created a personal page so that I could join the Tastemade Community today. I'll contact you there soon sweetie. Like I've said I still get lost on social media (except UA-cam - if they don't change things around...lol..)so bear with me ; )
Hi! If you're doing 4 layers of 2" thick cakes then you would only need 6" cake pans. If you do 3 layers of cake then you would use 8" cake pans. You're very welcome! God bless! :)
normal it's per slice hun. but really it's up to you how u want to do it. the best way would be to charge per slice this way you are not charging to little or to much. now the prices per slice is really up to you. allot of home Bakers ove know start at $4 and up per slice.
+Daisey Ruiz HI Daisey! We charge per serving, but, the price per serving completely depends on the intricacy of the design. The simpler the cake, the less expensive per serving. The more intricate the design, the more per serving. You need to always make sure you are being compensated for your time. As a cake artist, when we feel short-changed it's because we don't charge enough compared to the amount of time one spends on a cake. :) How much you charge depends on what you feel your time and work are worth. I often hold webinars where I teach cake artists how to charge for their work. Please visit my FB page when time permits and "like" so that you can receive info on my next webinar when it's made available. :)
Laura thank you so much, I already did mine like yours, on a 14" I did 58 servings. Are the slices too small? I don't charge per serving I charge by the way It looks. My husband always tells me that I'm working for free lol. Can I send you and email of one of my cakes? So you can tell if I work for free.
That's awesome Blanca! That actually sounds about right. I can tell you that your husband is right, even without looking at your work. I offer cakers FaceTime consultations to learn how to charge for their cakes. If you're interested please email me to krazykoolcakes@gmail.com Thanks! :)
hello this was really helpful. I'm only starting out and I'm so confused... i want to make a 2 tier cake for 60 people 2 layers in them. could you please help me??
Hi Diana! Thank you! Always keep in mind that a cake tier containing only 2 layers of cake will provide less servings. Which 2 cake boards when you drew the lines on them gave you close to 60 servings?
i havent drew them up just yet.. was at the hospital. i was thinking a 14" and a 10" this is just for a birthday party. Thank you so much for replying.
Hi, I have found your pricing and portioning tutorials very helpful, Thank you. My question is, how would you work out the amount of servings from a 3D cake ? Sue
Hi Sue! Thank you for watching our tutorials! You would need to figure out what size cakes you need to bake in order to be able to achieve the shape you are going for. This is something we discuss in our latest Cake Biz Video on charging per serving. Feel free to check it out as I feel it will really clarify this topic. :)
I get struggle every time with the servers.. you ,,save" my life 😀 Thank you so much! For 30 people 9"inch 3 layers you think is okay? And 7 " inch 3 layers is okay for 20 people? Thank you in advance!💖
That's so great to hear Teodora! So glad you found this tutorial and it helped you. You're VERY welcome! I would say the 9" should give you about 22-24 servings and the 7" about 16-17 servings. If it's 3 layers each about 1.5" - 2" in height. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! :)
Thank you for watching Lety! This tutorial is meant to help you be able to do any size on your own. All you need is to use cardboard cake boards in the 12" and 16" sizes you need and draw the lines yourself with a ruler. It will work out just fine, guaranteed. I hope that helps. :)
The number of servings is the amount of cake. Now, if you're asking if I charge by the "weight" of the cake, definitely not. Some cakes might be heavier than others just simply due to what ingredients they're made of or what filling they have. You always charge by servings with specific cake tier sizes. Hope that helps and makes sense. Thank you for watching! :)
great tips, but how would the customer know to cut the cake the way you say it should be cut? Do you tell them ahead of time? I'm mainly asking about the 10" cake. Also, how did you come up with your prices. Is it something you came up with yourself or did you learn it somewhere? When I give people my prices they always think its too expensive? The thing is that people don't understand the labor and the cost it takes to make a specialty cakes. Please help. You don't have to say how much you charge but, just an idea of how the prices came to be, so that I can feel confident when I give my prices. Pleaseee!
I agree with all you've said Twinky. I've learned from years of experience what to charge and how to charge for my work. I want to let you know that I offer 2 hr. Face Time consults to cakers to learn all of these things. Let me know if you're interested. If so, please email me to krazykoolcakes@gmail.com:)
Yes, what my subscriber said down below. I've never had anyone ask me how to cut it. I just expect them to know I guess... But, if you feel your clients will have trouble knowing how to slice a cake, provide them a diagram. :)
Im late at asking this NOW. but for future ill stil ask. I jist finished making a 3 layer 10" size. Which is supposed to serve 30-35. Thats the calculations looking at other charts previously. Was i correct? Or no? It is only my 2nd Order from a customer. Im in Texas. Tell me did i ROB myself charging only $55 for this cake? Simoly buttercream and candy toppers. Truly even if i was charging $85 for it. Im feeling a little bad tonight because it took a lot of my last 3 days and i have little ones. I feel bad all that time i spending not giving full attention to kids to only charge $55. And please if you must lecture me. Go ahead, im all hwre FOR LEARNING! AND I REALLY DONT WANT TO RIP MYSELF OFF, WITH KNOWING AND NOT HAVING THE ONFIDNECE TO GIVING MY QUOTES. BECAUSE I DOTN KNOW BETTER. TIA!! LOVING YOUR VIDEOS! I GOT HOOKED WITH THE LEARNIGN TO USE THE TAPPITS! I ALMSOT THREW THOSE THINGS AWAY! YOU SAVED THEM FROM THE TRASH,AND SAVED ME A HEADACHE 😄
Hi Aurelia, Thank you for your question. I'm happy to help. First off I'd like to invite you to check out our playlist called Cake Biz Video Series. We go into great detail as far as how to know what to charge and how to value your time. I know how disheartening it can be when you know you didn't charge enough. But, it's experiences like the one you just went through that will teach you exactly what not to do and how to value your time. Definitely you severely undercharged for your cake. The number of servings for the 10" sounds about right. I highly recommend you make your own cake serving chart like I show in this tutorial. When you watch the Cake Biz video series you'll find the video where we specifically teach how to know what to charge per serving. If you do this, you'll never shortchange yourself again. I"m so glad you enjoy our videos Aurelia! It means the world! God bless you and thank you for watching. :)
@@krazykoolcakes thanks for responding, I’m donating cakes for thanksgiving dinner n they serve 200 people. I didn’t know until I signed up. 😵💫 I want to make sure I have enough but also not overwhelm me since I’m still practicing. I was thinking of making cupcakes Incase I get overwhelm
I do something similar, only with wax paper. I outlined the actual pan, cut it out, and I fold it as small as I can.(have to save my cake boards.lol) That's how I show or predict how many slices a client can get.. I'm kind of bad when it comes to a ruler. Lol
I make 2 layer cakes. I did the math based on this tutorial and the difference between mine and yours is $212 (mine at $4.25/serving) $240 (yours at $6/serving.). I have always calculated at Wilton Wedding cake cut. So for an 8 and 10", it totals 50 servings at $4.25=$212. With this serving count (more realistic) the cost can be changed to $6/serving and the same cake will start at $240. My question is this... My cost is without fondant. Do you charge the same price whether you are using fondant or not? I have never heard you say there was a difference in price. If I was to do this with fondant, my cost would increase by $1.25/serving.
HI Bonni! We charge the same whether the client wants fondant or not. Whether someone charges for fondant or not is a personal choice. We don't charge simply because most people "expect" the price to be less if there is no fondant. Usually clients ask for no fondant AFTER they've received a quote with fondant and they think that by requesting no fondant, it's going to lower the price. We eliminate this loophole by not charging extra for fondant, or less without. I would like to invite you to watch our Cake Biz Video Series where we discuss the servings of a cake and how to charge correctly for one's work. :)
The best serving chart on UA-cam
Thank you so much! I appreciate it! :)

I always suggest to come up with the cost of the cake alone with no decoration at all, and then figure out what you would charge individually for all the cake decorations then add those amounts together. That's the TRUE worth and value of your cake. Always charge what your work is worth and more importantly, your time. :)
+laurapoopie thank you so much honey. BTW I think your tutorials are great.
+jennifer wright Thank you so much Jennifer! :)
Hi Laura, thank you for your tutorial this really helps! I was wondering if you can help me. I have to do a ball cake for 25 people and have no idea what size I should use. A 10 inch bowl? Thanks
You're very welcome! I've only made one ball cake and that was years ago so not sure I can be of help. :)
Thanks! This is sooo helpful! How about rectangular or other shapes cake?
You're very welcome Mela! I recommend you do the same for those shapes as well. Draw the slices yourself. :)
thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! It was soooo helpful!
That's great Lauren! You're welcome! :)
Hi Laura! I just watched this video today! Great tutorial! I'm just wondering how you tell your clients how to cut the cakes to get the number of servings that you've based them on. Or, don't you worry about that?
Hi Judy! We don't worry about it at all. Plus, no one has ever asked. Most people can figure it out on their own. :)
Great! Thanks!
I had no idea how to cut a 10" cake, that was so interesting to learn. Thank you for sharing!
You're very welcome! :)
That's a great question. I've never made a 2 layer cake for a client only because I like tall cakes. Not sure... Hmmm....
Hi, I usually do 2 layer cakes but I always use the 3 inch tall cake pan, so I always have 2 high cakes and perfeclty tall for decoration, if you are using 2 inch tall cake pann then I'll suggest do a 3 layered cake. Hope this helps.

Thank you!!! Where’d you get the cardboard circles? Did you make them? Lol
You're very welcome Chanel! You can purchase cardboard cake boards at your local cake supply store. :)
Great Tutorial! 😊
Cakes by Markee Thank you! :)
Great tutorial and great channel where are you guys located?
Thank you Alex! We are in El Paso, Texas. :)
I'm all the way in Miami, FL so we are almost neighbors ^_^
nursevsfood Haha! Wow! You're pretty far Alex! My brother just moved from Miami to Hollywood. :)
hi if I wanted to make a 4layered cake like 4 cakes and 3 fillings I need to serve 20 people what kind of cake tin works with this thank you
Hi! If you're doing 4 layers of 2" thick cakes then you would only need 6" cake pans. If you do 3 layers of cake then you would use 8" cake pans. You're very welcome! God bless! :)
Laura ,how many servings for a 12" round cake from your serving chart, thanks
HI Sandra, I don't have my cake slices in front of me right now... LOL. Laying in bed. Have you tried drawing it out yourself?
Do you charge per slice or per cake?
How much do you charge per slice if you do?
normal it's per slice hun. but really it's up to you how u want to do it. the best way would be to charge per slice this way you are not charging to little or to much. now the prices per slice is really up to you. allot of home Bakers ove know start at $4 and up per slice.
Great idea!
Thank you! :)
Hi laura how day know how to approximately work out prices for cakes, what would you have to take into consideration please could u advise me :)
From experience I suppose Cheryl. The more work, the more I charge. I basically charge for my time. :)
I loved the video sooo gonna use this drom now on.. also I would hear u better if you lowered the background music just a bit.
And how many servings did you get total for both cake boards?
i havent drew them up just yet.. was at the hospital. i was thinking a 14" and a 10" this is just for a birthday party. Thank you so much for replying.
??
Let me know what you get when you draw them up. :)
When you have a square cake .how many slices of cake you can get from a square cake
It depends on the size of the square.
But if I’m slicing a cake myself, a 6 inch is 2 servings 😂😂 Maybe one if it’s Shark Week lol
Haha! I hadn't seen a comment start with "But..." in a long time. LOL. If it's shark week probably just ONE serving. LOL!
Hello can you show us a video for sizes 12inch to 16inch please
Thank you for watching Lety! This tutorial is meant to help you be able to do any size on your own. All you need is to use cardboard cake boards in the 12" and 16" sizes you need and draw the lines yourself with a ruler. It will work out just fine, guaranteed. I hope that helps. :)
You charge by the number of servings, rather than the amount of cake?
The number of servings is the amount of cake. Now, if you're asking if I charge by the "weight" of the cake, definitely not. Some cakes might be heavier than others just simply due to what ingredients they're made of or what filling they have. You always charge by servings with specific cake tier sizes. Hope that helps and makes sense. Thank you for watching! :)
I use to bake 2 layers cakes..but with 3 layers I can bake a smaller cake but taller..more.slices and clients are satisfied
:)
great tips, but how would the customer know to cut the cake the way you say it should be cut? Do you tell them ahead of time? I'm mainly asking about the 10" cake. Also, how did you come up with your prices. Is it something you came up with yourself or did you learn it somewhere? When I give people my prices they always think its too expensive? The thing is that people don't understand the labor and the cost it takes to make a specialty cakes. Please help. You don't have to say how much you charge but, just an idea of how the prices came to be, so that I can feel confident when I give my prices. Pleaseee!
I give a diagram with the cake . =)
How do you explain to customers how to slice cakes to get the full amount of servings they need to feed guest?
I print out a diagram . =)
Thank you, xxlocalroyaltyxx
no prob
Yes, what my subscriber said down below. I've never had anyone ask me how to cut it. I just expect them to know I guess... But, if you feel your clients will have trouble knowing how to slice a cake, provide them a diagram. :)
Yeah, here in maine we eat cake like its the last one on earth. Big fat ol' slice lol. Thanks for the tip
Shouldn’t that 8 inch if you’re going to have three layers serve 16 instead of 12
If an 8" cake has 3 layers of cake it should have a minimum of 16 servings and up to 20.
hi laura are speak spanish ? because i love your channel but my friend they does not speak english. thank you . i love your channel
Hi Jorgelina! I'm so happy you like my channel! Thank you! :) Yes I do speak Spanish.
What about cakes for a shelter for 200 people? 8” 3 layers how many cakes do I need 😅. I’m learning
Hi! Thank you for your question. :) Would you be kind enough to clarify what you mean by "shelter"? Look forward to helping you. Thank you! :)
@@krazykoolcakes thanks for responding, I’m donating cakes for thanksgiving dinner n they serve 200 people. I didn’t know until I signed up. 😵💫 I want to make sure I have enough but also not overwhelm me since I’m still practicing. I was thinking of making cupcakes Incase I get overwhelm
great
Thank you!
@@krazykoolcakes are u guys back.
Thank you
You are VERY welcome! :)
I do something similar, only with wax paper. I outlined the actual pan, cut it out, and I fold it as small as I can.(have to save my cake boards.lol) That's how I show or predict how many slices a client can get.. I'm kind of bad when it comes to a ruler. Lol
That's sounds like a good idea as well. :)
Now... If only i can find a video showing HOW to cut the cake using the cake knife and serving thing set.
LOL. That actually is VERY simple. It's just slicing a cake with a knife. Are you serious about needing a tutorial for that? :)
Bonni Phelps Perfect! I'm going to do that as well. I prefer covering with fondant.
Well I wish I'd seen this I did 10" and yup large slices lol
LOL. :)
Amazing video, thank you!
So glad you liked it Antonia! Thank you for watching. :)
Thank you laura! This makes so much sense!....awesome!
You're very welcome! :)
How do you determine whether to do two layers or three layers?
