The Tonight Show Band was the last of the Swing Bands. Was watching that night as usual. As a tenor sax player in jr high and high school, Tommy Newsom blew me away.
Took the NBC tour when I was in Burbank...when you got to the "Tonight Show: set, one man was setting up his spot. Tommy Newsom. "Hardest working man in show biz" I shouted. Tommy nodded and smiled, then went back to his business. That tour was fantastic!
Very VERY classy tribute to one of the truly great wits and entertainers of all time. He was, by almost any standard: THE BEST. Tommy and Doc played their heart out on this one.
Truly one of the most moving renditions of this song. I wish they would have put this out on a CD. Doc, Tommy and Ed along with a wonderful string ensemble. I cry every time I hear it. It is so beautiful. A very touching tribute to Johnny!!! God Bless all of them.
A wonderful piece of music to begin with and probably one of the most moving arrangements I have ever heard. Such wonderful musicians that we were entertained by, courtesy of Johnny Carson, a comedian clearly in a league of his own.
Tommy Newsom looking at Doc doing a solo at around 2:52 is everything. This was a happy memorial, this show. I recorded this somewhere. The creamy sound of all the the strings are great, but Tommy and Doc sound like an entire brass section from a big band, their heritage. Wonderful tribute to Johnny...and a tribute to their talents along with Ed Shannessy (spel?) and kudos to Dave.
A class act that David letterman had Johnny’s musicians on to play probably for the last time Johnnys favorite song “ Here’s that Rainy day” such a great man that made millions laugh to have such a sad song , his favorite. Thank you mr Letterman.
Boy , this was a lush night on the Letterman Show , strings and all , a classic salute to an era that doesn't seem to be there any more with the end of the Carson Show. Thanks for sharing .
Simply magnificent..........an absolutely stunningly beautiful tribute to a man we all felt we knew well.........a man many of us grew up with.................watched this every day until it was taken off months ago. Thanks so much for posting it. I`ll hope it never gets removed.............hard to believe Johnny`s been gone over 4 years and off TV for almost 17................sad that Tommy has also passed on since this. This truly marked the end of an era we all wished would never end .
Wow what a song-and 2 of the best musicians. I actually shook hands with Doc in Aug 1975 after a Tonight Show (guest host Joey Bishop) in L.A.-luckily I did see Johnny, in Chicago doing a full stand-up show. All the same, RIP Tommy, and long live Doc. Hear this song again and just say "See ya down the road where we'll all meet again"
Saw this live. Letterman's not my favorite comedian. As a matter of fact, he doesn't break my top ten list. But, to his credit, he's never forgotten Johnny, who gave him his first big break, and supported him over the years, as evidenced by this very moving tribute....
Hope this tribute to Johnny is never removed come back to it from time to time ….,. When I’m missing Johnny and doc Tommy … funny , miss them like family ❤️thank you utube for posting it again thank you !!!!!!!! My parents adored the johnny Carson show they never missed it , their gone now but boy they, both mom and dad loved Johnny carson❤️
That Rainy Day & I'll be seeing You!!! Johnny's 2 Favorite songs... What feeling, tells a lot about the Man. You will all be missed... Heres.....Johnny!!!!
This performance on LETTERMAN and CBS, not NBC, … tells you ever you need to know about what a Troll Leno was as remains. He just won’t go away. Carson wanted Letterman, …and the planets were aligned for Conan. I wonder what we lost in the process?
Johnny Carson: a sad and astounding life. enormous talent and nerves of steel. ... he saved just about everything for going before the cameras for a couple hours "to make it all work". we all miss his class act. very VERY few people ever *really* knew him. no one could ever really take his place.
checked over 35 versions of this song,,Tommy Newsom stuck to the melody, clean and smooth,,what a seasoned musician,His opening verse is just hammer on awesome,
I am from italy and of course i don't complain about the musical heritage of my country , but we never had this kind of musicians regarding popular music. This is precious
Bene. I’m from NJ, USA, and every single night I went to bed, after The Johnny Carson show. I wonder what he’s thinking about the craziness in America & all parts of the world as he peeks down from heaven. I miss him.✨
Did Jay Leno PERSONALLY come on here and dislike this? Who dislikes DOC and DAVE'S BAND playing a song for not only a deceased man, but a GRAT man, the Once and Future and Forever King of Late Night! RIP Johnny!
Come on their used to be a much better video and sound of this song I cannot for the life of me understand why it was took down had much better video and sound of this. I cannot for the life of me understand why it was top down
I had it bokmarked, too, played it a hundred times. I read somewhere that the copyright was owned by Fancypants or Candypants Productions, one of Letterman's companies, and he didn't want it available to the public.
@@ChrisPBacon-vk7sj Thats sad what the heck are they waiting for all of the people like us that would enjoy it so much to die I don't get it. I listen to it so many times it was one of my favorites beautiful song and brought back great memories oh Johnny and the band. Thank you for your response.Tom
These times will never be seen again. I loved every second

Sadly Tommy passed without this type of remembering. Just sad
I was 6 years old just months before Powerline and I both turned 7!
I return to listen to this often. One of the most glorious performances ever.
Every note they play is gold, covered with hundred year old wine....and tears
Very well said. Do you write professionally?
@@MuzixMaker Thank you! No, I don't. That came from the heart.
Do you notice how even after all these years later, Doc & Tommy take a step back when the other solos? Class like this is virtually gone from society.
Very Classy, Indeed!!

Tommy and Doc played their heart out on this one.
Amen
Just think how hard this must have been for those guys...
...Playing their recently departed best friend's favorite song as a tribute...
...Wow.
Two men that had Johnny's back and loved him so much! It came from their hearts is why it sounded so good and so right! GOODBYE JOHNNY!
Doc is still alive and living in a modest farmhouse in the same county of Tennessee that I do.
Truly one of the most moving renditions of this song. I wish they would have put this out on a CD. Doc, Tommy and Ed along with a wonderful string ensemble. I cry every time I hear it. It is so beautiful. A very touching tribute to Johnny!!! God Bless all of them.
All I can say is AMEN to all of these beautiful comments. There are tears in my eyes.
A wonderful piece of music to begin with and probably one of the most moving arrangements I have ever heard. Such wonderful musicians that we were entertained by, courtesy of Johnny Carson, a comedian clearly in a league of his own.
"Here's That Rainy Day" is the song. Even the title is a proper tribute after losing our sunshine. I'm just happy he was with us for a while.
Sweetest version ever. Knowing why it was played makes it all the more lovely and blue.

Wow -
Moving tribute to an American icon. Doc and Tommy's horn and the strings are hypnotizing. A stunning performance. RIP Johnny and Tommy.
great audio - video looks like it was taped under water.

Just like Johnny. Doc is a class act. The passing of an era. Beautiful.

I watch this all the time. Sensational
If this doesn't bring a tear to your eye, nothing will. :(
I have been watching this clip for years. It is still as emotional as the first viewing.
I still can’t watch this without shedding a tear
I remember seeing this as it aired, I only wish they had made a recording of the performance. wonderful tribute.
Gorgeous & perfect.
2:05 run was phenomenal. What a great arrangement of one of the all-time "musicians tunes". They stretched that ending for 17 seconds!

nothing, really. because it all ended when Johnny retired.
Nobody could replace Johnny Carson,
so you can't even try.
You know that.
I cry every time I play this, its so soulful and meaningful to Doc n Tommy, the Tonight show with Johnny and Ed was like family so many yrs.
Johnny Carson: a sad and astounding life. enormous talent and nerves of steel. ... he saved just about everything for going before the cameras for a couple hours "to make it all work".

Johnny also had another favorite song, one with which he closed out his final show: I'll Be Seeing You, perhaps the greatest ballad ever written.
Nagyon szép, romantikus dal, álmodozásra való Köszönöm !
Bravo! Simply magnificent...Doc can make a trumpet sing so sweet.
An amazing tribute to an amazing man....
If anyone received a classier tribute than this I don't believe it. What a magnificent send off to a true giant of the entertainment business.
man oh man TY makes me Cry ,,best I can say Bueatiful !!!!!!!

I remember that Carson did not have a funeral service, per his wishes. Had there been one, no doubt this song would have been played.
Outstanding tribute to Johnny!Marvelous arrangement!
Only in Hollywood!! Great Musicians. The very best! Great arrangement of a great song in tribute to a legend by Tommy Newsome on Sax.
This was in NYC.
My absolute favorite piece of music.
I must have missed this episode of Letterman, but I'm so happy it's available. Beautiful song, and so well performed. Bravo!

...Ed Shhaunessy is gone, and so is Tommy Newsom...I think that only Doc is the last member of the old Tonight Show band that is still living.
Just turned 97
Heres That Rainy Day...
