I bought a Multi/Poly and then returned it and bought a TEO 5. The Multi/Poly sounded huge, but I hated working on it. Loving the TEO - yeah, I’d love the extra voices but the workflow is a lot of why I buy hardware to begin with, and the TEO’s UX is SO much better than the Multi/Poly’s. I’m sure I’ve commented this before, lol, but, you know - it’s super important to me.
Yeah the 5 voices for 1,500K is a no go for me even with better workflow. The Korg also has an incredible software editor librarian for free. You have to pay for the privilege with the TEO5. I'll be getting the Multipoly.
Don't forget there is a wide price difference, and the Multi allows for a lot more variety with all the different synth emulations. I think the Muti is a killer synth for the money. It also has a far wider choice in the oscillator department.
Thank you for this epic comparison! Now that you compared how similar they are I would love a comparison of their individual strengths VS each other. Right now (If I didn't already have a TEO) I would be inclined to get the Mono/Poly. But what can the TEO do that the M/Pol cant and visa-versa? "Let them fight!"
Any difference people may hear is psychoacoustic. If you wouldn’t see what is on the screen you couldn’t tell which is which. Analog fans of course will never agree. Everything is VST, even the D-50 and the DX-7 were VSTs of the 80s.
I began to suspect differences in the key tracking of the envelope and filter curves. There were times when the curves very nearly matched lower on the keyboard but not higher up. However, it could be the fixed differences being more audible higher up.
Interesting comparison, but as good as the Korg is, it's essentially a VST in a controller box, I believe the VCO's have more punch to the sound dynamics compared with the MODWAVE I had, which, in the end, I returned it to get the Take 5, the function per knob makes the workflow way more immediate compared to the step learning curb and menu diving of the Korg MODWAVE/MULTIPOLY. ..Just buy the VST!
Nice job. Another comparison that I might do sometime soon is the Korg multi/poly vs Sequential Pro 2 (which has both Dave-style Prophet and Tom-style SEM filters in it). Of course Pro 2 is monosynth but whatevs.
Keybed is not very good on the multi poly but they announced the module version. Also I don’t consider the peak or summit a Va synth, I consider them hybrid synths. I actually like the peak and summit slightly more since the filter and drive architecture is unique and the oscillators are generated very differently giving a very unique sounding waveform.
It’s not as light feeling but it doesn’t feel that much better. It has more spring and more feedback on terms of you pushing down. So I assume it’s the same keybed that they added stiffer springs to or maybe stiffened rubber cups. I would wait for the module if you are concerned.
The SEM style filter matches doubtlessly. Quite interesting to know were if Osc Sync also matches when using similar settings. OB-series synths have a certain sound when syncing that's quite unique. I guess some would agree.
Great comparison and the M/P filter does sound convincing. I think the TEO has the edge especially with the square/pulse wave. On the retriggering, the M/P seems to use the Prophet 5 style where it reuses the same voice for the same note, while the TEO always round robins. Maybe there’s a menu setting to change that, or if you turn down the release that should make the retrigger less apparent. Another thing I discovered about the TEO is it has a LOT of low end, more so than the Take 5. Bass goes deep.
Very interesting comparison for someone who owns the TEO-5 and is looking at the Multi-Poly. I wonder how the Multi-Poly compares to the Roland System8 ACB emulation, as you stated its the best hardware VA you've played?
Never had a system 8 but had a few acb synths like the Juno and Jupiter boutiques and I feel the multipoly is still a bit better, not only that but you don’t have the polyphony limits.
Now that a module version is announced the Korg is a particularly great addition to something like a Hydrasynth. If you are on any kind of a budget limitation or just lean to bang for buck it seems the clear winner. In the end both great designs IMHO.
Perhaps it would also be a special treat beside comparing their hardsync to compare TEO's Thru Zero FM with that of the Multi/Poly. I'd die of curiosity. 💜
I don’t hear enough differenence. I would buy the MultiPoly 100 times over the TEO, because the sequencer, the wavefolding, the wavetables and the 4 parts. I think you should try a song for the next comparison rather than playing loose notes, because it would be really interesting to see if the tiny tiny difference that is there will hold up in musical context. My guess is it will totally not matter.
Thanks for the comparison ...I dont think you were having issues with 're-triggering'. I think one of your envelopes were being modulated by velocity (check both synths for that being within the default Init.). Let me know if that was the case?
The magic fizz is gone, for one, and the more movement there is, the more apparent it becomes. The extremes are also pretty self-evident. The Korg Multipoly sounds like a VST. I won't be surprised if it becomes one. I guess for some people close enough is good enough. Good on them. For me, it's like being on the other side of the world. And just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that Yuki says they're the same. Anyways, thumbs up. Thanks.
@ I know, even the synth „phoenix“ in Korg gadget uses it, as to not use the name. Also I don’t say it’s ugly. Still it is distracting. I prefer the Oberheim SEM or TVS-Pro colours 😉
@hermask815 Yeah, can't say the stripes do too much for me. Would look too much like a take 5. I think I'm still turned off by anything Korg after I received the wavesstate og a few years back. I felt like crying when I witnessed the build quality. Although this does sound decent
You made them sound very similar . But ive watched heaps of videos of both and the quality of sound is just better on the Teo 5 in my opinion . If the korg had the same sound quality , id buy it in a flash .
Great video. Thanks Yuki. I bought a Nord Lead A1 nine years ago and it remains my favorite VA multi-timbral synth. It’s gorgeous on its own and with Strymon effects it’s next level.
Damn! You weren't kidding. Thanks for the comparison, Yuki!
Loved the video. I am really itching to get the Multi poly. What i heard so far really impressed me

To be fair the multi poly has several other filters as well

Ultimately it’s the interface and the teo 5 is stellar I own a teo 5 so I am very bias
So agree. Had the Multi/Poly, hated the UX, returned it and bought a TEO 5 - inch already had a Take 5 I loved, and the TEO did not disappoint.
Thanks for this, Yuki. ❤️

IMO the best stress test on a digital filter is high resonance with a fast, plucky envelope and some drive. Acid.
Exellent video as usual ... can you comment on the keyboard quality and ya said best VA ya tried , even Peak ? ( i know you loved it )

Hey, how does the keybed feel on the korg? I just got the opsix and the keybed is pretty bad and cheap feeling, do you know if this is the same?

Wonderful comparisons! Please do more!
I always thought G-Force had a great SEM model. I compared Korg's 2600 vst (the sem in that) against the G-force filter and they were pretty close.

I will have to check next time I play with the multipoly. That might be init behavior.
I'm no expert on what analog is supposed to sound like, so I'll just say that I'd be happy with either synth.
If you like that filter, you should try the electribe 2 or KingKorg, they have way more options
@SlaserX the king Korg is way more limited as a synth.
