  • If you need to go from a 5 Way Lever Switch to a 3 Way Lever Switch here is an explanation on how to do it! If you have a different way that you've done it then by all means let me know in the comments or you can even make your own video!

Thank you very much for this video!!! I have a used EMG 81 and 85 loaded Strat pickguard I got from eBay or Reverb (don’t remember which one right now) that was having bad noise problems. When i took the pickguard off to try to find out what the problems were, I saw a loose wire that was coming from the ground terminal on the buss. I looked everywhere online to see where to resolder the ground wire to the 3-way selector switch, but absolutely no info. So when I saw your video I soldered the ground wire to the side of the selector switch and ¡Voilá!, no more noise!!!
So thank you very much again for this much-needed video re EMG pickups and standard 3-way Strat Selector Switches 👍👍👍

Very useful video, thanks! For the switch wiring, where you connect the 4 tags, you can use a G string (From a guitar preferably!) to connect the tags, cut to the right length & it works like a charm.

I just bought an EMG 66/57 set that I am putting in a Ibanez RG (minus the single coil) and thank you, sir.. this was a big help. The instructions only have the diagram for the Gibson style toggle. Cheers!!

Ahh, and the instructions said that actives don't need a ground... I thought that was strange but I'll probably ground the switch at the least

Weird... I am renovating my old ibanez RG using the 66/57 set also without the single coil (just bought a chrome single pick up cover and wire wooled it to make it look like the set , and that's why I am here 😂😂 cause I just bought the solderless kit
Are you me ? In a parallel universe or something haha 👌🏻

this video has been rather helpful to me so thanks very much, I've just bought the jim root set and it has the same wiring diagram for using a 3 way blade switch and I wasn't sure what to do with that ground wire.
the way I'm thinking about doing it is crimping a lug connector and using a small screw to attach it to the switch body ( i haven't done it yet but if I'm successful I'm more than willing to share exactly what i did)

As far as grounding the switch goes you do not really need to ground it with a separate wire if you have your pick guard covered with copper shielding tape and>>>You have at least one of your pots grounded to the jack. Works for me, but I always check to make sure there is continuity. If you are not going to use any type of shielding then of course you do. I always like to shield my pickguard with copper tape and the cavity with conductive paint just cause I do not like the 60 cycle hum. Hope this helps.

The instructions I received with my kit had a ground cable included to go from the tone pot to the bridge. Is this as effective as the jack?

i have the strat 3 way selector and can't be certain how to wire with two independent volumes and one tone that is only for the bridge pup. I know i send from the efx/tone send to the bridge tone control but how to output to the jack plug. the diagram shows going from a volume to it but i have two volumes

Excellent video... cheers from Toronto....I have an Epiphone Dot 3 with a 3 way Toggle switch. In the Middle position, before, I THINK Both the Bridge and Neck were turned on and I could adjust Both Volumes.
Now, in the Center position, the Neck one stays Off, until I slightly open the Bridge Volume!
Is this the norm??? Please advise. Thanks.

I soldered up a very similar switch, but I didn't use a ground, and everything works fine. EMGs dont really need a ground from my understanding, I could be wrong though.

The actives don’t require a ground typically, however, their passives do. Cheers -Ryan

why didn't you just buy a EMG quick connect 3 way tele selector switch? it has the buss already in it ...I'm also gutting an old Ibanez custom, of it's passive pick ups(and getting rid of the middle single coil)and replacing it with a Het set. \m/

Availability in my area... at the time the EMG Solderless Switches were out of stock and I bought 2 because I was installing Fishmans in a 7 string as well. Het Set sounds pretty good! I just installed a set in an Explorer. Cheers -Ryan

Does the EMG selector come with a cable? Or do the EMG pickups have one for the selector?

All of EMG’s accessories come with the applicable cables, thankfully. Cheers -Ryan

    Question:
Is it possible to replace a 3-way toggle with a pot in order to dial in the different levels of the bridge/neck pickup? If so, then what issues would I face?
In other words, I want 3 pots and no pickup selector instead of 2 pots and a pickup selector.

you'll need a so called "blend knob" for that, very typical in basses, guitar not so much, so you'll probably have to do some research regarding the wiring, but definitely possible

I installed a complete solderless kit in my King V, now the bridge pick up sounds muffled and unclear. Dunno if it’s the pot or the switch but some fuckery is amidst in this plug & play set up.

Hey Ryan, I am installing new pickups in my HH telecaster: EMG 85 in the Neck(Active) & an Seymour Duncan Invader(Passive) in the bridge. If I just bypass the active connectors for the Invader. Do you know if this will still work using the included EMG pots and hardware? Thanks

I've never done that myself. I have seen Active and Passive in the same guitar before. Your best bet would be to contact EMG. Their Customer Service is top notch! Usually less than 24 hour response time! Cheers -Ryan

TriCrow Studios Yeah I figured the next best step would be to contact them or just simply go both passive or both EMG. Anyway, thanks for the response and useful videos 👍

I'm replacing the stock EMG's with Dimarzio's and the existing switch wiring is way different then what the Dimarzio's call for. I am confused but I guess I'll just try to wire it to the Dimarzio diagram.

did you have to solder the pickups to the switch? or how did you do that
