This one always creeped me out !! I had all three of these book collections as a child. The "new mother" with the glass eyes and wooden thumping tail reminds me of Coraline's "other mother"; maybe the author was inspired by this tale.
Me too!! If you think of it, this is about abandonment of a mother for her two daughters!!! I know it well because I was removed from my biological mother's care after the let me be abused physically & sexually and my brother and I were extremely malnourished!!! This story scared the crap out of me as a child!!!
This was one of my favorites out of the whole series! It fucked me up lol. And I swear to god when I first saw the trailer for coraline this story is what I thought of
I think the New Mother was a caretaker, nursemaid, or nanny that was blind or had glass eyes and her wooden tail was a stick she used to discipline children. The girl's mother hired this woman to take care of the house and care for/discipline her daughters while her and Arthur went away because of the stress and pain caused by the sisters was too much for the mother and the baby. Or the New Mother was a witch or monster that was connected to the Gypsy Girl somehow, who knows? The ambiguous ending just adds to the creepiness of this scary story.
I never thought of it that way. That's pretty interesting. But I do remember hearing that the author originally was going to make the gypsy girl be the devil in disguise.
@@Paladin_Green Maybe? I do not know if Baba Yaga is a gypsy legend because I know her as a witch or creature from Russian folklore. Maybe she is or maybe she is not. Either way, if I was still a kid, I would not want to be raised by a woman described like this.
Nahh, it's canon that the girls ran out of the house when the new mother tried to break in. They were on the run for the rest of their lives living off of berries in the woods and looking for their family. I think this was mentioned in the original publication of this story back in the Victorian times.
Fun fact: In another version of the story, Blue-Eyes & Turkey are the names of the 2 girls (whereas here, they’re named Sandra & Dolores). Also, in another version, the gypsy girl actually placed a curse on their mother & granted them their “new mother.” Side note: Sandra & Dolores were easily tempted. They pretty much gave in to the Devil, since the gypsy girl never really followed up on her promise to give the drum to them. And now, their mother’s gone because they chose not to let it go & behave themselves.

I told this story to my two daughters, about the same age as those in the story, who themselves had a baby brother. They were terrified and cried and couldn't sleep. Probably wasn't very nice of me tell them the story.
@@kenhollis6197 Yeah, it takes two to tango, or three as the case may be. Nobody twisted those girls' arms to make them misbehave like that, they did it of their own volition.
@@thenoneone1027 They were not tricked. It was their selfish want for the drum that made them act up. They could have just walked away and not done anything bad. Additionally, they saw how upset their mom was and still acted up.
I created a version of the tale where they prevent their mother and baby brother from leaving them by killing them with a gun, and they forcefully take the drum from the gypsy girl and throw her in the river to drown, only for them to take it home and for the drum to not work, and for the stick creature to arrive in order to punish them.
See, I always thought the "new stepmother" was a demon. I've been around one or two women in my life, but not of them had tails, let alone wooden ones.
It's open to interpretation. You could think one of two things, in my opinion. But of course, there are many possibilities. 1. The mother is dressed up as this creature to scare her kids into behaving from now on. 2. Their mom actually left and the new mother is a boogeyman type entity who takes bad children.

This story was an inspiration for Coraline. Bravo. 🙂 If you look up Lucy Clifford "The New Mother" you find out all about it. 😁👍

As a kid, I never saw this as scary. I saw it as cruel and sad because the lady made those girls run out their mother. I hated that

The question remains: Did the father ever return home?
There’s something about this story that I like
The step-mother that their mother threatened to leave them with.
It kills me that the origin of the glass eye/wooden tail mother is lost forever.
I believe that this is part of the reason why so many people are so bad today. That and bad parenting or no parenting at all.

What was that creature at the end with the thumping tail?
