2018-2020 Subaru Crosstrek Rear Differential Fluid Change

- You can perform a rear differential fluid change on a 2018 to 2023 Subaru Crosstrek with the right tools and know-how! Doing this job on the Crosstrek is about as straightforward as a differential fluid change gets, but it's good to see how the job's done. This appears to be the first video on UA-cam showing how to do this specifically for the second generation (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023) Subaru Crosstrek XV.
TOOLS:
Torque Wrench: amzn.to/3T2qyza * (Be sure to select the right drive for your tools!)
3/8" Drive Socket Extensions: amzn.to/3TaRCMJ *
3/8" Drive Hex Head Socket Set: amzn.to/3t3Qobm *
3/8" Drive 10mm Hex Socket: amzn.to/3fyHdgf * (Just the one you need here.)
Oil Drain Pan: amzn.to/3FNGpyt *
Shop Towels: amzn.to/3zOejPQ *
OPTIONAL TOOLS:
3/8" Drive Breaker Bar: amzn.to/3hiLswY *
3/8" Drive Long Hex Head Sockets: amzn.to/3UxmQyR * (Might eliminate the need for extensions?)
Better Oil Drain Pan: amzn.to/3hf0TWQ *
PARTS:
Differential Drain Plug or Fill Plug Gasket: amzn.to/3Kr0hIU * (Both plugs are different, but use this same gasket, so get two.)
Gear Oil: amzn.to/3UcyyPu * (If you are only doing the rear differential.)
Gear Oil x4: amzn.to/3Uq167Q * (Enough for the front and rear on CVT models.

Just bought a 2019 with 40k on it, gonna be changing my diff fluid this week. Thanks for posting this
Why aren't all service videos this straightforward? Anyways, thanks for the help!! Any chance you plan on doing a Crosstrek CVT front differential video sometime soon?
Thanks! I don't know how I missed this comment before, but I actually performed (and recorded) that service a while back but I wasn't happy with the result (over a month of gear oil smell afterwards and a noisy wheel bearing that I had to diagnose at the same time had me worried I messed up somehow) so I put the edit on hold. I'm debating doing the job again to see if anything can be done to avoid that month plus of odor. There's a chance a design quirk can lead to overfilling (and that may lead to the smell) in certain situations and I'd like to save people that trouble if I can confirm an issue and show how to avoid it.
Nice and helpful video,
Do u have front diffential and cvt oil change?❤
"I could not find the tool when I made this video"
I know that pain, bro
I love it. Simple short video. Sub for sure
Awesome .. can you do a video for the front differential or is it the same ?
While the general idea is the same, the locations for drain and fill are less obvious, and there is an extra step. I performed the drain and fill on camera, but afterwards there was a month or two of gear oil smell in the cabin, so I'm going to try to perform it again and see if I can avoid that issue, then pass that knowledge along in the video.
@@CarsSimplified thank you. Why do you think there was a smell?
I currently suspect that there was build-up around the fill level port that led to me over-filling it a bit, and the excess gradually made its way out through the vent somehow until it got to an acceptable level. I'm not sure about that, but I'll look for that and other possibilities.
@@CarsSimplified I see. Did you use about a quart of oil per differential?
Got a 2021, with a completely different diff. Can’t find a pic or video with one like mine anywhere.
thanks very helpful
This the same way to replace fluid in a 2021 crosstrek cvt 2.5l?
I used an entire 1L bottle of gear oil and my diff still isn’t full. Is there another problem with my vehicle? Upon completely draining the bottle the oil was not dripping out of the top. The manual only calls for 0.8L of fluid.
I imagine a leak would be noticeable, so unless a high capacity differential cover is installed or that particular bottle was underfilled, I'd say check to make sure the car is level. Because of the shape of the differential, the front of the car pointing down can add some extra perceived capacity. Anything else tilting the front of the differential housing down can do that, too. A different final drive gear could take up less space in the oil capacity area, too, but that's not a common modification, so I'd imagine you would know if that was changed.
Frankly, if I was in that situation, I would be so puzzled by this that I would drain the new stuff back out into something to measure it. Let me know if you come up with a conclusion. I feel like I ended up putting in 0.9L in mine before it started dripping out, so it may be pretty close to a full bottle on some vehicles.
@@CarsSimplifiedhello there. Just did my diff Fluid change and I used about 0.9 as well.
What size are the crush washers on the rear and front drain plugs
What about the frount diff
Do you have a recommendation for the crush washers?
Get them from the dealers parts desk
please buy a 2013 Volvo XC70 with 3.2 non turbo and start those videos next :)
if its really this simple.... why is my dealership trying to charge FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS to replace the the fluid in both front and back on my 2021???
Stealership*
Cause they are ripping you off duh
I had them do both diffs and the CVT for $450. You're getting ripped
It really is this easy. Just did it on my 2015 forester.
How can the dealer charge $150 dollars for this? This has to be one of the easiest maintenance jobs you can do yourself.
How many miles should the Front & Rear Differential fluids be changed at? (Note: A dealership said every 120K, and that it only needs to be checked every 30K/60K)
Gear oil lasts a very very long time. The dealer is probably right. 120k would probably be for a lot of highway miles. If you don't drive that much. I think every 5 years is all you need.
Read the maintenance schedule, gear oil is cheaper than repairs. changing it is like brushing your teeth, you don't have too...
Be careful with the front diff, if you strip the threads, you're screwed.
My 2015 Crosstrek says 90k. It’s better to be proactive I think with these things
@@hnd2893 no pun intended!
