I think initially it's harder to get jacked. Partially because like Mike said, it's harder to gauge progress in size vs strength. Gaining 10lbs of muscle is a lot and may take you 12 months as a noob, whereas in 12 months with the right program you could add a lot more weight to the bar which is much more noticeable. Also, strength is a much more objective measurement. We have strength standards and you can look at what other lifters are doing to see where you stack up. Bodybuilding is way more subjective. Someone could have bigger arms than you but a smaller chest and back, which one is better? There's no objective answer.
But overall, I think you also have to look at natural vs enhanced guys for both bodybuilding and powerlifting. If you go to a natural bodybuilding show and then go to an enhanced show, there's no comparison. The natural guys look like twigs compared to enhanced guys. But in powerlifting, a lot of the strongest lifters are drug tested and (I believe) natural. It's a much more comparable groupset.

I dunno, i compete naturally in bodybuilding, and I've never gotten depressed from prep. I actually enjoy prep more than off-season bulk. I feel lazy when I'm eating so much more and i have less step requirements i don't do as much hiking and sightseeing when I'm bulking. I've also had my hormones checked after my season and into my bulk my hormones come back really quick. Im 40 and my T levels are 842 ng/dl and the year before i was 982 ng/dl.

Why is Mike on 1600 calories? That seems a tad restrictive
