    I keep coming back to this video because the look you got out of this lens is very impressive, this lens is extremely underrated for portraits, I think they way it renders in these portraits has a very magazine looking vibe

    So many lens reviews are tech-first and experience-second. Your style is the reverse, and it’s way more helpful in understanding how the lens will work on a real shoot. Thanks!

    I bought this as my first FF lens and got it because I had a trip coming up. I later planned to replace it with a 24-70/70-200 combo, but I haven't done that yet. This lens is excellent. I've been a little tempted to go with the 35-150 though.

    The Tamron 28-200 lens would have to be the most generally useful lens ever made. The focal lengths in this zoom ( or similar from any other manufacturer) will enable you to do about 95% of your photography as a general shoot photographer. Of course specialised portrait lenses are going to do better portrait but are going to cost about three to four times as much. Back in the film daze I had a Tamron 28-200 and it was permanently fixed to one of my cameras. Just as an aside, I still have it attached to a film camera that I keep for nostalgic purposes. As an all purpose general lens it really can’t be beat and would make a super travel camera for a family that want much better images than smart phone photography could ever give. Also great for photos of the guys pumping iron down at the gym too for single or group shots (just saying).

    Charlotte was an amazing model!! I loved her movements and how creative she was! The photos were beautiful!! I think all of my favorites were on the 28mm end! After watching a lot of your zoom lens videos, I’m learning that I really love distortion as opposed to the “flatter” look at the telephoto range. Awesome video and awesome team!!

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  4 роки тому

      Yesss I agree, it was SO much fun to shoot with her! And thank you, I think my favs were the 28mm ones too and a couple of the 200s as well. I'm the same as you, I always lean more towards having a bit more distortion and environment in my shots hence my fav prime is 35 :D

    Couldn't believe my eyes how good these "super" zooms can be today. Even the bokeh style was mostly nice, and w/o green bokeh fringing. Actually no color fringing anywhere else neither. The contrast and flare robustness against bright light is also a surprise. If Sony only knew, what Tamron are doing for Sony currently :) Canon may become as good as they want with their newest cameras, but 3rd party lens support becomes more and more decisive, esp. when attracting new people photographers (who are usually on some kind of a budget) towards a mirrorless system.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  4 роки тому +3

      I agree! I was genuinely impressed with the quality and sharpness of these shots considering how wide the range is and also how tiny this lens is - so so good!

    • @LockeLeon

      Another crazy thing about this lens is a 1:3.1 magnification at 28mm.

    • @tubularificationed
      @tubularificationed 4 роки тому

      @@LockeLeon By now I saw a UA-cam review which rules this lens out for now (for people/portrait) due to bad AF reliability. And no, this is not the "rare" isolated issue for AF-S which Sigma attempted to fix with firmware recently.

    The lens is a no brainer for travel photography. The sharpness is quite amazing for an all-in-one and the aperture is quite acceptable at all ends. 28mm is limiting but not a deal breaker for me. I'm definitely getting this lens but I wouldn't use it for serious shoots. For that, I still go to my 16-35 GM, 55 and 85 GM.

    I have a 28-200mm f/3.8 to f/5.6 Tamron that I especially like to use as a replacement for my 28-70mm f/2.8 and my 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor lenses when I need to obtain tight face shots to full-body shots on the beach around sand and salt water.
    Not only does my Tamron allow me to shoot quickly but it also saves me from having to change lenses on the beach and expose my more expensive lenses to sand, salt water, and high winds.
    Plus, for some reason, my clients seem to prefer the portraits produced from my Tamron over the ones produced from my Nikkors.
    When I shoot backlit portraits, I like to use fill-flash. For me, the variable aperture makes calculating the correct fill-flash ratio a nightmare.

    I just ordered Sony a7C silver with the tamron 17-28 f2.8 and need now a cover of 28 to 200 or 300mm range. i hesitate with the combo sony 24-105 constant f4 + tamron 70-300 4.5-6.3 or the tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 alone. the camera today are ok up to 6400 ISO, i don't see the problem of pushing the ISO. I don't think than the eyes can distinguish between 100 and 320 ISO with a sony a7c. i have compared the photo at multiple iso files from a labs and have them side by side on a 32 inch 4K UHD screen and there are no difference. there are not too much difference between your photo with the 35mm and this one. the photo are darker but there is not a huge difference honestly. a post edit can probably reduce the difference massively.

      Tamron has a 28-75 and 75-200 at a constant f/2.8. I believe they have a 16-28 too, so pretty much the whole range at a constant f/2.8. Might look into those.

    This lens isn't just for beginners btw, it's also for professionals. The idea that a professional must use 2.8 lenses is just marketing. Jay Maisel for example always uses "amateur" zoom lenses, like the nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6. His work isn't much about shallow depth of field, so why would he carry that much more weight anyway? It's just about your specific needs and photography style.

    I came on here to have a look at this lens to go with my new Sony A7iv, here in the UK. Although I have the new FE 20-70 f4 and FE 70-200 f4, I want to buy an all-in-one light travel or walk-around-lens, and one that is versatile and light enough to shoot portraits like this, with wider apertures. It seems to be very impressive. I also use the Sony 85mm f/1.8 and Sony 50mm f/1.8 for model photography. May I just say that your model Charlotte is really pretty. Gorgeous girl.

    I bought this lens but was disappointed it did not come with a tack sharp model. *shrug* But mine is getting used for hiking and travel. It's very sharp on the corners for the price. It's pretty much the best budget lens to come out for the e-mount that you can do almost any kind of photography.

    Hey Julia, i think this lens produced the best results around 49/50mm ( just my opinion ) definitely seems like a good all in one type of range lens. I'm completely surprised that you tested out this lens for portraits! Somehow you made magic with it. I honestly think if you attached a potato to your A7iii that somehow you would still capture something magical. To me, this video demonstrates that the photographer, subject, lighting, and post-processing are much, much, more important than the difference between lenses. The Tamron 28-200 is such a versatile lens and I can't wait to have it for travel and hiking photography. I think I'll stick with my Sony 85 1.8 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 for portraits though.

    Most interesting in the bokeh comparison is not the bokeh, but the compression of facial features. From big nose, small head to small nose and big head and quite perfect around 50 to 100mm :-) I will use this slide to decide on the focal length in the future for portraits!

      I was given a Sony A7R ( first iteration) as am historically a Canon and Olympus shooter, didn't have any Sony native ( very expensive) or non-OE glass. Purchased mint 2nd hand Sony Zeiss 35 2.8- this would be one of the most underrated lenses on the market. Superb results and nice and light. Can't go wrong unless you feel you must have 1.4- if so, why not just bump up ISO?

      Thank you! I've only used the Sigma 35 on the 5D4 where I had some focus issues, it would be great to try it again on the A7III to see how it goes as it's a nice lens minus the backfocusing I experienced! I haven't used the Sony 35 1.8 but would love to use it soon and make a video about it. I also have a video on the Tamron 35 1.8 which is a reaaally nice lens in case you want to check out the sample photos I took from that too :D

      Julia Trotti Yes I’ve seen your videos using the 35 sigma paired with canon :) I remember you mentioning those focusing issues. I also remember that you stated that it’s more of a DSLR thing (which makes sense to me) but upon more research, I’ve come across some mirrorless shooters who also claim that the sigma is not very reliable. I just have a hard time understanding if those focusing issues 1) in fact exist on mirrorless 2) if so, are they more apparent when shooting video? 3) even if when shooting stills, is it more noticeable in fast pace shoots (like weddings or events) and not really for creative portrait shoots (which is what I do)? I feel like the sony 1.8 would be a more reliable lens, however I do enjoy that separation the 1.4 offers (plus I love shooting in blue hour so it’s very useful to have as much light coming in to the sensor as possible). I have seen also your video on the tamron (both the 1.4 and 1.8) I just didn’t realized it was available for sony 😨 I’ll be checking that now. Thank you for responding and if you could try out the sony FE 1.8 it would be much appreciated :) hopefully when I buy one of those lenses I can also buy some presets of yours to go with them :) cheers!

    Hi Julia, I am new to photography and want to pursue potrait photography like you do. I want to learn about light, how do you manage light in your potrait shoots. Do you use natural light or artificial light or both for clicking your potraits. I also want to learn about particular ISOs for potrait photography under different light conditions and place. Take care. Regards

    This was a highly educational and great review of this Tamy.
    To introduce myself, I love to have 1-fit-all but hate to see the result of a not-good UW zoom at the end of the day and a need to repeat it all!
    1st impression: Compare to their earlier Tamron 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6, this newer ultrazoom has done a great improvement.
    Then you really did well with natural light shooting, irrespective of the gear.
    Lastly, you showed very great collage images at the end, in terms of what this glass can do at the end, the first (FLs) was perfect. The second one (Bokeh in relation to constant ration Face Portrait) missed a major element. That is model's face was in motion so the viewer can not really compare the FL-related distortion of the face for comparison purposes.
    Nevertheless, to say excellent coverage.

    Will this lense be good on Sony APSC? It seems a great all in one lens on Full frame.

    Yeah I wouldn’t recommend it for portrait photography shoutout to you for trying 😊 I’m a nature and landscape photographer and this lens is a lifesaver and stays on my camera 90% of the time. Can even do mid level Astro at that 2.8 limit. Hard to beat.
