Absolutely love this hymn! I sing this all the time at home (not sung in church, surprisingly). People think it’s just a funeral song but no, it is a glorious God-glorifying hymn that testifies of His Presence. The whole song is about God being Present, at all times not just in/after death? God is our Home, so says Moses; Jesus is our ever-present Emmanuel, a foretaste of His glory, whether it’s His will for us to fight with His upholding Spirit at our right hand on earth or to, by death escape from death into His immediate Presence. What glory! To escape from this death, this greatest burden of all burdens every Christian bear, this body of indwelling sin … to a body in heaven, that’s so filled with Jesus Christ, that it’s impossible to sin, praise the Lord!
Wonderful rendering of this hymn I sang as a young person in Jan 1967 at my dear Grandmother's thanksgiving service in the Gospel Hall Portsmouth who went to be with the LORD.

I discovered this beautiful hymn tonight in a lovely old antiquarian book "Illustrated Christian Lyrics." All 22 original verses are shown. The book was given as a gift from "May" in 1885.
One my favourite song...in our village and nearest villages we sang this Soulful Song for Funeral Service😫...our village name is Megnanapuram💗i am in Choir🎙🎤
Ah, it’s not the mic. People aren’t closely following the organist with the ear. It sounds like they are on the same wording at slightly different times. Hence the blur. Clarity is difficult when the minister is not waving the time especially for most of us oldies who are partially deaf in any case.

Probably because it's congregational singing, picked up by mics at a distance, the singing lacks clarity. ☹️
