I grew up in Bangalore and went to Bishop Cottons Boys School and my parents took me every Sunday to an Anglican Church St Marks Cathedral but never paid much attention to the songs 45 years later in the US this tune came into my mind and then I rediscovered this hymn. I never appreciated the significance of these amazing verses.I am emotionally touched because I can never go back to the childhood with my parents but Praise the Lord for His Promises!✌️🛐
This song makes me feel lifted up into the Heavens. I could sing this in my heart over and over. Only Christ can raise me into the heavenlies where HE is seated at the right hand of GOD. It is all about Him and nothing about us. PRAISE THE LORD!!
Two beasts rise out of the pit meeting with myriad saints and angels Descending from ZION, AND CHRIST IS VICTORIOUS CHAMPION----ALLELUIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This hymn is so appropriate for the time in which we live. Though man is attempting to formulate a one world government we know that there is only one who is forever on his throne, the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, he who is King of kings and Lord of lords. May those that love the Lord, even though these seem uncertain times, be ever led and strengthened with the assurance that underneath are the everlasting arms and that God's mercy endures forever.
March 4, 2022. Watching what is happening in Ukraine - and around the world. What a grievous time we live in. What a sad world we live in. And then I put this on and was overwhelmed. Earthly kingdoms will pass away. And the true King will reign.
This is true Biblical worship. This God centered Christ exalting Hymn was sung in the same church that Charles H. Spurgeon once pastored, the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. Like our home church today, it’s ‘statement of faith’ was fully confessional, more specifically the London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689. Though I will never boast about our local church (as we should only boast in the Lord), but am thankful we too are fully confessional, and sing hymns like this, rather than today’s modern day praise teams that entertain itchy ears, while worshipping the false deity of me, myself, and I.
I like both modern and traditional worship. I don't think either one is better than the other. People just have different personal preferences. Worship music never stays the same for more than a few centuries. I have heard what hymns from the 18th and early 19th centuries sounded like, and they quite different from this one. Look up Maddy Prior on YT and you'll find out. I have noticed that many hymns have borrowed melodies from secular songs, such as Be Still My Soul, Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, and Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken. And similarly the Star Spangled borrowed its melody from a drinking song.
@@SantaFe19484 I like modern songs too, but a wise old pastor pointed out that the Wesley, Watts, Cowper variety all use Biblical text in their lyrics. It matters little where the tune, or ayr originates, it's the lyrics that are important.
This morning is made for me with the hymns descending into my humble spirit. God bless the hymn makers and accept me even in my sinful nature. Lord, grant me a second chance if I have falling from thy great mercies and love. I have nowhere else to go. Lord, accept me.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee. O Heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who art in all places and fillest all things; Treasury of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
"Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, amen" (Revelation 1:7).
Who is on the LORD's side? Who will serve the King? Who will be His helpers Other lives to bring? Who will leave the world's side? Who will face the for? Who is in the LORD's side? Who for Him will go? By Thy call of mercy By Thy grace divine. We are on the LORD's side. Saviour we are Thine!
I love this old hymn because it is full of biblical truth. On the one hand the redeemed are joyfully anticipating the return of Jesus Christ but on the other hand, lost sinners are being warned, "COME TO JUDGEMENT! COME AWAY!"
This hymn was truly a team effort. The original version was penned by John Cennick, a land surveyor from Reading, England, who became a Moravian preacher. Hymnwriter Charles Wesley adapted the Cennick version, and then it was finished by two of Wesley's followers. One of them was Thomas Olivers who had been a London Cobbler; the other was Martin Madan, who loved to embellish Wesley's hymns and probably added the hallelujahs. As we await the coming of our Lord, about which this hymn is written, God's kingdom continues to grow just as this hymn once grew. Preacher, cobblers, land surveyors, and those who embellish with hallelujahs build on one another's efforts for the glory of God. they are just a few of the "thousand, thousand saints attendiing." Peace Be to Their Memory! They left the Christian world a lot of legacy to celebrate our risen Savior! Blessings to All! Lynnae Larson
I love the traditional hymns like this. I like some of the current music but nothing lifts me like these old hymns that truly celebrates God's holiness. These hymn writers were true followers who put their faith in these words. I miss hearing these in church now. I like hearing an organ in service or all a capella...if you turn off the electronics you'll find people are not really singing.
We sing this hymn the first Sunday of Advent every year. I look forward every year to hear this hymn; especially since my Grandmother would sing this around the house all the time growing up, now I truly appreciate this hymn
I love the end of the first verse! I'd changed it to "Jesus appears on earth again"! DV I will have this at my funeral and the text will be from Thessalonians which talks about Christ coming again!
Lo! He comes with clouds descending, Once for favored sinners slain; Thousand, thousand saints attending, Swell the triumph of His train: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Jesus shall forever reign. Every eye shall now behold Him Robed in awesome majesty; Those who set at naught and sold Him, Pierced and nailed Him to the tree, Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, Shall the true Messiah see. Now redemption, long expected, See in solemn pomp appear, All His saints, by man rejected, Now shall meet Him in the air: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! See the day of God appear! Every island, sea, and mountain, Heav'n and earth, shall flee away; All who hate Him must, confounded, Hear the trump proclaim the day: Come to judgment! Come to judgment! Come to judgment! Come to judgment! Come away! Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee, High on Thine eternal throne; Savior, take the power and glory, Claim the kingdom for Thine own; O come quickly! O come quickly! O come quickly! Everlasting God, come down!
Happy and relaxed in my atheism but I did certainly did enjoy singing hymns like this in the church choir fifty years ago - and it is often hymns like to this that come to mind if I feel like a good sing in the car or shower.
Aren't you supposed to love the Lord your God, with all your heart and all your mind and all your strength? This is the uniting force under the Lord, not the Church you claim as your own, but the body and each member as the unified Church under Christ? The unified body under the blood of our Saviour has no place for schisms. Delight thyself in the Lord and His people, not the church labels. Ex Orthodox and lover of the Church of the Living God, purchased with his blood. Amen.
Agree, Christina Burke. I cannot think of a single hymn tune written in the last 75 years which is uplifting. It must be that the talents of those who would compose for the Church have been seduced by the great secularization of the age and the ubiquitous trashing of music. I am so thankful that my church sticks with the classical compositons and simply refuses to sing the modern junk panderings. Which means I only get to hear the best. That is one of the great advantages of being Eastern Orthodox... :-)
Therefore if He cometh in the clouds and saints meet Him in the air, then why the general assumption by all Christian churches that when a man dies, they go to heaven. A most insidious lie for since the beginning of sin- God declared that a soul that sinneth- it shall die. - The bible says death-= sleep until He cometh again for the 2nd time to take His saints- living and those buried, nevermore to be separated again. Praise HIM- hallelujah.
Revelation 5 11. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. 13. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. Revelation 1 7. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. Zechariah 12 10. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
Nothing better than a hymn about the Second Coming written before John Nelson Darby started preaching the lies of dispensationalism. The Second Coming and the "rapture" are the same event as described in 1 Thessalonians 4.
Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. 17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
This is an amateur recording but a very moving one with plenty of gusto between the organ and the congregation. They put the Academy of St Martin in the Fields version to shame for conviction and passion. What a moving hymn from age to age.
This is the hope of every true Christian.
This is nearer now than it was!!!!! Jesus is coming again . Sing HALLELUJAH
