    If you talk about Islam things might 'backfire', yet if the same happens the other way round when folks anywhere talk about Christianity, not much happens.

    • @nuzayerov
      @nuzayerov Рік тому +21

      Things happen too when people talk against other religions such as Judaism or Hinduism. If Chrisitians don't say anything if people insults their religion that's on them.
      But I can tell you this with certainty tho, that in countries where Christianity are minority, like Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, India, there are laws in place that if someone insults a religion like Christianity, they are punished accordingly. These laws are mostly in place to ensure 'religious harmony' and minimise potential inter-faith violence.
      If Christian nations like US, Slovakia for example does not have such laws in place, that's on them and their voters.

    • @jessejordache1869
      @jessejordache1869 Рік тому +6

      Well it depends on where you are. I remember Sinead O'Connor being unable to appear anywhere after tearing up a picture of the Pope on television. This is before my time, but I think most people didn't know what she was talking about (the Catholic pedophilia scandal has been a public issue in Ireland for much longer than in the US.) Also, before and during the Lebanese civil war, Christian militias would attach non-Christians to power lines. But true, in this day and age, it's probably the religion which has the least consequences for criticizing it. But for most history since its founding, it was the most dangerous of the Abrahamic religions to criticize.
      It's funny how history works. What you're saying is true, but it doesn't tell you much about the religion, but about where the tensions are. Religions get really touchy under two sets of circumstances: when they're a persecuted minority, or where they're in total control. It's why at the moment criticizing Islam is a briar patch; because in so many parts of the world it's either one or the other. Bill Maher likes to make a similar argument to what you're making -- some Muslims react very badly when their religion is criticized while Christians may kill for other reasons, defamation of Christianity isn't one of them, so that's how you know there's something wrong with Islam. When periods of time where it was the exact opposite are pointed out to him, he goes "but that was like 100 years ago!", as if that was before the Quran 2.0 dropped, or something. No, same religions, just different circumstances everywhere else. Which should tell him it's not the religion influencing the society; it's the society influencing the religion. This is obvious if you've read the Quran, because it's constantly referring to Old Testament prophets. Noah, Moses, Jesus, Abraham, and Solomon are all people whose teachings you're supposed to follow. This, like everything else in the Quran, is repeated over and over and over again.
      Anyway, I don't know if you know this, but just yesterday three Palestinian-Americans who were visiting their families for Thanksgiving were shot by a white assailant in Vermont: two will likely pull through, but one's got the bullet lodged in his spine. One of them went to Haverford, which pretty much profiles him, but all three of them looked like old money to me. But I doubt they were shot for being preppy.

      @@nuzayerov Hey, I should have read your post before writing mine. I made a similar point, that religions get touchy when they feel under threat OR when they are in total control. In Indonesia, where it's like "there's some Muslims, and then there are some non-Muslims" there's no tension I know of.

      And most of the classical texts of the Greco-Roman world only survived because Islamic scholars translated and preserved them in their libraries, from whence they were eventually re-exported to Europe. The fact remains that during the middle ages it was the Islamic world which was the centre of learning, with the first universities and the world's greatest libraries.

      @@GeorgeP1066 The imperial library in Constantinople, founded 300 years before Islam came into existence, housed tens of thousands of texts from the ancient Roman and Greek world and the most influential texts were studied in Europe as much as elsewhere. The Arabs translated and thus preserved many texts from the areas and civilizations they conquered, but "most" would certainly be an overstatement.

    • @GeorgeP1066
      @GeorgeP1066 Рік тому +11

      @@Saufs0ldat pretty much all the works of Aristotle we have come from sixth and seventh century translations into Syriac and then into Arabic and then, finally, into Latin by visiting scholars. The library of Baghdad was founded in the eighth century and was the largest public library in the world, with a collection from all over the world thanks to its location at the heart of global trade routes, at a time when Europe basically didn't even have any public libraries.
      The idea that the Islamic world wasn't a major contribution to world knowledge, especially in the middle ages, is just ludicrous. There's a reason why scholars from across the medieval world flocked to the Islamic world, and it's because it's where they could have access to teaching and books they couldn't find anywhere else.

      The word algebra is the latinisation of the Arabic word al-jabr (completion/reunion) used in the title of a book that first introduced the concept. The author of the book was called Al-Khwarizmi and his name used to be transliterated into Latin as Algorismus from which comes the modern English word algorithm.

      @@robertkovalcik7818 Yes, indeed. I am aware that this is put forward as the origin, and I was simply offering some variation in response to the humourous theme offered on this page (in much the same way as another contributor on this page was offering humour in relation to his maths and perfumery contribution).
      My initial thoughts (prior to my zebra story comment) had been to provide a "play" on the word "abacus", something related to Abba or Abu Cuss, perhaps. But I ran with the zebra (pun intended).
      I still thank you for offering this, and I would invite you (if you've not done so already) to place this explanation in the main comments section as well. Some viewers might not have picked up on the exact meaning in relation to the al-jabr reference presented at the end of this clip (by Diane Morgan, aka "Cunk").

      That meant a couple of decades in one place and another couple in another place etc. over a period of a few centuries only.
      Not 600 years.
      And if it was 600 years, that would be worse, because that would dilute those paltry achievements even more over a longer period.
      The conquest of Byzantine, Gothic, Persian and Indian cities (along with Chinese contact) exposed the Arab barbarians to the knowledge, skills and experts of those cultures that just a few of their enlightened rulers managed to patronise and encourage before they died, with any progress then smothered again by religious darkness.
      That's why you have to dive back so far in history to find any progress at all.
      The 'golden age' is largely a modern propaganda myth fabricated to help ease the massive inferiority complex Islamic societies suffer from due to the huge advancements of the secular West.

    The religion was not founded by Muhammad, but his family after his death. He only came along some 500 years or so after the advent of Christ, enabling lots of plagiarism, like the angel he spoke to, Gabriel, called Gibreel.
    Gabriel, is the angel who told Mary she is to be pregnant with the son of God. Imagine that. The same angel who told Mary one thing and Muhammad another? He met Jesus in heaven? That means he didn't meet a prophet,as no man hath ascended to heaven. And Issac was put up for sacrifice, not Ishmael. Put that in your idahladha, and smoke it.
    Islam, a basterd religion yesterday, today, and always. Such nice folks too, what with constant jihad, rape culture, and all.
    Then there's the silent majority that knows to remain silent,... or else.

      @BlisaBLisa 90% of Christianity is bogus by Sunday keeping, less sinning by less killing. However, Christianity doesn't have endorsed pedophilia by a book, nor female 4th class citizenship. No better than Islam, other than the creator on their side.

      @@BlisaBLisa Christianity sucks too. In fact, I am not a fan of ANY organized religion. .. your point though?? Am I correct in understanding that you mean, the constant jihad, and rape culture is justified or excused because another religion is bad too?? I see this deflection technique used in politics quite often. One group calls out another group's leader or higher-up on some bad behavior. Then, rather than owning the situation, they say something along the lines of "Oh yeah?? Well YOUR guy blah blah blah..." as if deflecting the accusation makes the bad behavior of their guy acceptable because someone from the other side is just as bad. You see it a lot in schoolyard behavior too. In this case... Christians are/were bad, so the jihad and rape culture is not up for discussion.
