Weekly Vlog: Why You Should Care About Weight-Loss Drugs-Even if You Will Never Take Them

  • I get so many questions about weight loss drugs, and I want to talk to you about why you should care-even if you know that you will never take them.
First, there is the magnitude of their impact. Barclays did an investigative report on the financial impact of these drugs. They concluded that they will have as big an impact as the invention of the smartphone.
In ten or twenty years, we’re likely to see a significant portion of the population on these drugs. They will come down in cost and be available in pill form. They’re also likely to have mechanisms like anti-nausea compounds built in to mitigate side effects.
As these things happen, they may become more acceptable for many people. So I think these drugs are here to stay.
As far as safety goes, people have been on these drugs for diabetes for a while now, and there don’t seem to be any common problematic side effects. There are side effects, but they are uncommon and don’t outweigh the benefits of the drugs.
Another reason to watch these weight loss drugs closely is that research shows that changes in our orientation toward thinness have a huge impact on society, especially young women and girls. When Twiggy became a supermodel back in the 1960s, ultra-thinness became the unattainable norm, and in a very short period of time, body dissatisfaction skyrocketed.
But when you’re thin, you’re not always healthy, and that’s also the case with obesity. It may be true to say that there are people with obesity who are healthy, just as it’s true to say that there are three-pack-a-day smokers who don’t have lung cancer. However, the data on obesity that shows that it’s not healthy is as strong as data showing that smoking causes cancer.
But it’s equally important that we not slide into anti-fat bias. These drugs have the potential to make that worse, so we need to pay attention to their impact on our communities.
The final reason you should care is that we know these drugs slow down gastric processes…but they also affect the brain. GLP-1, the main receptor affected by these drugs, is found throughout the brain: in the reward centers, in the appetite centers, and elsewhere.
Without these drugs, the GLP-1 in your brain spikes when you eat and then goes down. With the drugs, GLP-1 is high all the time. This raises many questions. What will it do to the reward centers? Is it going to reset the reward system? We see some evidence of people being less interested in things like gambling or pornography when on these drugs. So perhaps these drugs will be seen as something that many people should be on.
I take hormones because I’m about to turn 50. It’s made such a difference to my quality of life. These GLP-1s aren’t that different. They may, in the same way, become normalized, so it’s not a big deal to be on them.
Because I’m so curious about these new drugs, I’ve created a new event: a recorded video series only available for a limited time. The first two of four parts are available today. The series is called “How to Get Weight Loss Drug Results…Without the Drugs.” I dive into the neurobiology of these drugs, and explain how you can get the same results by changing your diet and your habits.
Also, next weekend, I’m having a three-hour Fireside Chat with several guests, including a physician who understands both Bright Line Eating and these drugs. I’m also planning two social live events on UA-cam.
All this is available for free, and clicking on the link below this video will take you to the event page.
So that’s the scoop: I think these drugs are here to stay, and you may want to have tools up your sleeve so that you understand their impact, and know if they’re right for you.
Note: Our special event is now over.

Appetite suppressants stop eating for people that pay attention to appetite, but in my personal experience l rarely binge as a response to appetite. I overeat to relax, to escape, to calm my stress. That’s why l don’t think these drugs will work for food addicts or binge eaters.

Binge eaters can't binge as they will throw up as emptying of the stomach has slowed down. If you throw up enough, you will stop over eating due to the bad experience. Also gastroparesis is REAL. That is a disorder nobody wants.

I don’t want to be overweight! And I don’t want to be sick! And I don’t want my joints to hurt! It’s crazy that people can bluff themselves to think that being overweight is ok it’s very unhealthy!
I’m no where near where I want to be but I know I don’t want to stay here and stay stuck!

Economic division too - rich will be thin and poor will be obese. Very thought-provoking vlog - thanks.

I am really concerned about one issue in particular, which is these drugs causing gastroparesis, which diabetics can already have as a health issue. Someone without diabetes surely would not want to court any of the potential side effects, especially since there is a very effective and healthy alternative like BLE whose benefits go way beyond being in a right sized body. I am also very concerned about the long term lack of nutrients (already a big problem in our society with so much processed food consumption) with drugs that just make people not want to eat at all...possible connection between that and Ozempic face? Protein, certain minerals and EFAs are so critical for skin health...perhaps those deficiencies are causing or contributing to "the look" or it could simply be a matter of too much weight loss too fast and in an unhealthy way... perhaps both.

It will be interesting to see how bright line eating can encourage a healthier relationship with real food whilst using these drugs to help them get started.

If it takes one to three years for the weight loss I wouldn't take them anyways.

My friend already bought knockoff pills and they made her sick, she had to get off. A couple of family members are on Wegovy and both are saying they are depressed. I am not a doctor but could it be from this?

Even the legitimate versions will make you sick if you don't slowly ramp up the dosage according to the schedule recommended by the manufacturer. I'm sorry you have stupid friends.

I meant to post the link, but you can find her story online from several sources. Her name was Trish Webster and she took Ozempic and something called Saxenda, which I have not researched yet. I wanted to be sure people knew who she was.

I do wonder if vanity won't be the only or even the primary driving factor. We may end up in a situation where medical insurance won't cover people who are obese, or will charge an enormous amount for coverage, if there is an option for these meds. I too worry that it has taken a very long time for society to accept that people can have different sized bodies and still be helpful. Today, as you have said before, Americans would prefer to have cancer than to be fat, which escalates the hate against those of us in larger bodies. With these meds, I suspect we'll lose the gains for acceptance for all. And I suspect even with the drugs, bodies won't all be the same size because they are not made to be.

I learned yesterday that it takes approximately 2 years to lose weight on a whole food plant based diet, and this can be sped up by doing exercise.

I don't have a personal experience with these drugs. I have a friend on one. I am not sure which one. My concern for him is the side effects from this shot he takes and also how it interacts with the other prescription drugs he takes. These too have side effects. I know rx drugs are necessary for some people but I worry about the number of different drugs some of my friends are on and the side effects they are already experiencing.

I agree, we do need to pay attention to what's happening with these drugs.
Shortly after watching this vlog, I read a terrible story about a woman in Australia who lost her life from taking one of these drugs. She wanted to drop a few pounds so she would look good for her daughter's wedding. When I hear these stories I am sad and infuriated that dangerous "quick fixes and short cuts" can be marketed and promoted so cavalierly because there is money to be made. (US and New Zealand are the only two countries that have "direct to consumer" drug advertising.) I am not against making money and I want companies to make a fair profit but not at the expense of people's lives. Same with weight loss surgery...it forces you to eat less so you lose weight...no kidding. People are not overweight because they have a stomach that's too big, they are putting the wrong things/amounts in it. I have known some people who have had this surgery (two of them are nurses) and the feedback ranges from "meh, it hasn't done what I expected" to "I wish I had never had it, I lost all my mojo", to "I gained all the weight back and more in a year" to "I ended up in the hospital for two weeks from an infection." There are no safe, healthy answers in the drugs and surgery realm. Lifestyle and behavior change is the only safe answer. 👍
Now that I think of it, has there been a vlog on bariatric surgery? I am not submitting a request, just curious if I missed one.
