  • Sheep hooves get trimmed before the rams join the ewes for breeding in October. The past few times we have had to trim sheep hooves, we have used a spin chute. When we first began trimming sheep hooves, we had no handling equipment. Without any handling equipment, this task can be slow, it can be very hard on your back because the sheep need to be sat up. The trimmer needs to hunch oer the sheep to hold it into position while trimming the hooves.
With the introduction of both a handling system that leads the flock into the spin chute obviously is less stressful for the flock and the farmers. It makes it easy for the flock to understand where they are to go which reduces the stress. Then once they are in the run or alley, they are led into the spin chute. This contains the sheep in an improved position which allows the hooves to be trimmed. It also improves the working position of the individual trimming the hooves. Tyler is 6'3" tall so he still tends to have to work in a bent oer position which still places pressure onto his back but it is definately an improvement over being fully huntched over the sheep.
