    Smoked ham hocks are one the most undervalued items in the store. Onion, beans and hock broth? Hell yes.delicious!

    The elderly lady across the street from me years ago made this soup and I was never one for beans in my soup but I'm telling you, it's the best soup I've ever eaten. I didn't know until now how she made that broth so flavorful...it's the 'HAM-HOCKS'!
    One variation she did with it was to make little, quarter sized, suet dumplings with it. Omg, so good.
    Thank you sir! ♥ Now I can finally make Isabel's wonderful soup myself.
    After I had moved across from Isobel, I began noticing that she walked, at least 3 residential blocks to the grocery store and back with her grocery bags under her arms. I would marvel at her determination to save money on cabs, she was on a fixed income of course. She could barely walk!
    So, I got to know her by asking if she'd like to ride with me whenever I go shopping, and long story short, we became very, close friends.
    I'd drive her to get her groceries and she'd cook me all these fantastic meals about once every week. She'd also make extra money on the side by catering every now and then but by then catering was becoming a bit too much. She'd still do it sometimes though.
    Her recipes were all great but her specialty was baking! She'd bake me wonderful cakes all the time.
    That was a great benefit for only giving her a lift to the store....but just having her as a friend was the greatest benefit of all.
    She lived and worked in that gorgeous, lakeside (great lake Huron, east coast) town all her life as a bank teller. I was shocked that no one in that town would pick her up when they saw her walking. She had a friend who'd pick her up sometimes but not very often and mostly for just going out somewhere.
    I don't live there anymore but we still talk on the phone quite a bit...and boy do I miss her!
    What a dear friend.

      Yes, Isobel added bacon to it too and Schneider's Smokie wieners-which made the soup inho!

      Hi again. Ok it’s done. I followed as much as I could. Didn’t have a shallot but did have a sweet onion. Didn’t have 2 ham hocks but did have one rather nice one from a specialty meat store. Probably the only thing I messed up a bit was that I thought I was grinding pepper and realized it was the salt grinder 😧but I caught it before I put too much in. May be a tad salty but I don’t think too much. Next, it’s pretty loose with liquid but again, not overly so. I did mash up some of the beans .I’m going to make a pot of rice and that will help absorb. My cornbread is still in the oven. I think,it was a success. Thank you again ❤

    • @RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN
      @RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN  16 днів тому

      @Uprightfossil Great! You can also thicken the juice by mixing a cornstarch slurry. Mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1 Tablespoon of cool water. Mix until smooth. Bring your beans to a light boil then add the slurry. Stir until the liquid is thickened. Be careful not to burn the beans.

    Thank you so much for this recipe. I made it today and it turned out delicious. I used northern beans and soaked them overnight. Since it was a 32 ounce bag, it made a ton. I divided it in half and put half in freezer for another time. I also used leftover ham bone. Wow what a way to get every morsel of ham off the bone. I still needed to cook it for another 3/4 hour, but when I returned home, I took the meat off the bone and tried a cup of it. It was so delicious and I hadn’t even added the butter or the bacon fat to it, or mashed any of it. This recipe will get typed up and added to my recipe binder. Thank you again so much.

    I know, older video, but i saw family recipe, and had to watch. Almost exactly the same as mine buddy, except i use great northern beans, mo big difference. A very helpful tip an elderly lady gave me several years ago. On the amount of beans you cooked , appx. 1 lb. Or so, add 1 teaspoon of sugar. You will taste NO sweetness , but it causes a chemical reaction with the beans to get rid of gas,bloating,farting, etc...it really does work, i was skeptical. I used to eat a lot of soup beans,but had to cut back because of type 2 diabetes. Can you believe their on my food list that i can only eat occassionally, i thought they would be eat all you want with cornbread and raw onion. Some turnip/mustard greens. Unreal, i hate being diabetic, but thank the Lord i ain't type1, talk later my friend.

    It’s hard to find decent smoked hocks anymore. I switched to smoked pork neckbones.

    I picked up some game changing pointers from you! I take a few scoops out at the end like you did but I run that through the blender and put it back in and makes the whole batch a little creamier but not mushy.

    I've never heard of adding butter. But, adding the bacon grease makes some sense for the flavor.

    Thank you ! Made tonight ….. delicious! I forgot celery tho….Imma gonna bake fresh sourdough bread to accompany it. I had to use smoked pork chops because my store was out of ham hocks! 😢… but even with the complications…. Turned out great!

      Yes. I added the full recipe and directions to the description box directly below the video. Click the "show more" button and the info will drop down. It's not printable, but you can either write down the ingredients or take a pic of it on your phone and take that to the store for reference. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Please let me know how they come out if you make the recipe.

    I do add a heaping tsp of bacon grease to make it richer and a Tbsp of flour to thicken it a bit.

    What are tiy doing? Adding all of those veggies? Are you making veggie bean soup or Navy Bean soup?

  • @fishingfool909
    @fishingfool909 3 роки тому

    I add 2 large peeled Russett potatoes, cut into large chunks, after the soup has simmered about an hour. After they have cooked for an half hour or so they should be soft enough to remove and mash. Add the mashed potatoes to the soup to thicken it up along with a cut up ham steak (1-1 1/2 lbs).

    That’s right now this is the first bean recipe I’ve seen or somebody did it right the bacon grease it gives you the best flavor and you can use it if you use just a little bit you won’t get a bacon flavor but it will season it just perfect awesome good for soups every single single kind of soup are you put bacon grease in my homemade tomato soup you will never have anything flavor any food like bacon grease or use it for beef stew chicken broth beef broth or use bacon grease for everything, I agree with the girl downstairs they write nothing like a man who can cook and I love the southern accent I’m from Florida that I love you selling kin folk but this looks so good and it’s funny I’m actually soaking beans right now to make bean soup navy bean soup tomorrow I can’t wait is making me hungry

      I love my beans but I don’t see difference much between northern and navy….. aren’t they the same?
      Awe who knows….. but I also grab those dry beans from discount stores and such…. Mixed beans cheap cause no one seems to want to cook a good meal these days…. All about MC Donald’s….😢

    • @RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN
      @RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN  3 роки тому +1

      They are similar, but they differ slightly. Navy beans are more oval shape and smaller, but more plump. Yeah. No Mickey D’s for me. Lol
