This was actually super helpful for me. I've been wanting to make my own animated series online but wasn't exactly sure what I had to look for so now I know! I plan on eventually getting into the industry and hoping for character design. I eventually want to be a show runner though
It's like any other job. If you want to make a cartoon, you have to have previous experience, which means (Unless you have the connections.) you have to start at the way bottom.
Real question, how you do you get to the studio?? Do you have to go to art college? What about high school art classes (do those matter?)? I wanna get into the industry but I have no idea where to even start. How do you get hired by the studio...
Be on the hunt for job listings from certain studios! While connections help, ambition and determination are just as much of a useful asset, even if things don’t get moving right away. Consistently posting art, updating portfolios, in a way you gotta be ready to make your own audition!
Art schools are great way to learn, and an even better way to build connections that'll help you get into the industry. Posting animations online can help too!
Here is my simplified backstory as an artist wanting to break into the animation industry: I started drawing at an early age (and not everybody does this), got into the Visual Arts program at a high school designed specifically for artists (OCSHA/OCSA), and got my AA degree in community college to save money on tuition. While in community college (for four years), I was working part-time at Starbucks, and after I graduated, I applied for a job as a barista at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, CA. I have lived in CA for most of my life, so when I got the job and needed to move out to the LA-area, it wasn't as difficult for me as someone who would be moving from out-of-state. As soon as I started working at WB, I looked for nearby art schools to continue my education, and I wound up in the LA Film School. It's great if you want to get your degree in three years instead of four, but you need to be hardcore focused on your studies because every month is a new class -- and the focus is heavy on gaming and 3D animation. I'm a traditional artist wanting to animate traditionally, so this school was not for me, and after a year and a half's time, I dropped out. I thought I was screwed for a while, but in less than a month afterwards, I wound up being accepted into the Don Bluth University (an online course taught by former Disney animator Don Bluth). I'm currently still in this course because he's teaching me everything I wanted to learn since I was little: the hand-drawn and traditional animation pipeline that he once learned at Walt Disney Studios. To make a long story short, there's no one-way into the animation industry. Yes, it helps to have a BSA, BFA, or MFA degree from an art school, but nothing can teach you how to be creative. Nothing can teach you how to make art the speaks from your soul and personal experiences; art schools and mentors can teach you the mechanics of drawing so that you have the SKILL, but nobody can teach you the TALENT of being an artist. It comes from within, so if you have the motivation, the creativity, and the persistence to see yourself through the tough spots in life on your way into the industry, you will find your own way in. Nobody follows the exact same path as their idols; that's what makes this industry both maddening and worthwhile. Best of luck to you!

This is so cool! I'm currently creating a graphic novel as the writer w/ my good friend and we've been working for around 4 years and thinking abt making it a cartoon one day or maybe a movie series. Super insightful and helpful! I would definitely want to work in writing haha or if we do happen to get our graphic novel picked up by a studio (like hilda ;]) then he and I would probably co-show run which is super cool! Either way, this looks super difficult and time consuming but I'm sure it's very satisfying to be a creator. Awesome video!
Thanks so much for making this especially for telling artists how to make it into the industry. It would be more than a dream to have a TV show but I would honestly just love to work in industry. I love the process of animation especially board driven, traditionally animated works. I just really knew how they colored these episodes. My theory is Photoshop but it could be something else.

@Jamerick Draws The story that I've worked on the most is about two very weird alien species trying to live together on the same planet. You could say they hate each other, but that's mainly because of horrible things that happened in the past. The kids know what happened ages ago but befriend each other anyway. But of course some parents are not okay with it. Also a lot of weird stuff happens but I don't want to give these jokes away. That's really all I can say for now.

I wanna make my own cartoon when I'm older hopefully it's works out idrk how it's made much but have been doing research and this is a bit helpful. Thx
Thank you for explaining, I may be a little 13 year old but I have a LOT in mind, I have 6 projects, 5 of which are movies and web series. They are Cloudworld (series, sad 12 year old discovers a pastel pink world inside of her donut plushy, kind of like a mix of Bee and Puppycat and Twelve Forever), Marina (movie, suicidal girl gets sent to a journey to the sea by the ocean goddess and she finds lots of cool stuff), Magic Forest (series, 13 year old boy and his owl mom in, guess what, a magic forest), The Rock Block (series, emulates the feeling 2000's cartoons give you, main characters are Jay, Kiffer, Princess, Quinn B., Beatrice, Molly, Rey and Chip), Satelitre (a sad series in which an astronaut 8 year old boy's parents get lost and he has an entire aircraft to himself, soon enough he realizes its not as cool as he thinks it is and he dies on a crash at the end, trust me you're gonna cry), and the only game is Cat Village (you're a cat with powers which he doesnt use much, and you explore 7 worlds: 1. startHOuse, 2. Plain Old Woods, 3. Actual Plains, 4. Marketland, 5. Europa, 6. recreodelpantano and 7. The Summit, it's very inspired on the videogame Journey and it's absolutely LITTERED with Neil Cicierega references). Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
I’m only 16 but I am already working hard to become an artist when I’m older and to work on cartoons. So watching this is helpful, interesting, and intimidating for me
I'm glad that I've stumbled upon this video in my recommended section! I've always dreamt about having my own cartoon pitched either in my country or somewhere else where cartoons aren't exactly popular. (I live in Finland. We used to have really good cartoons, but nowdays you rarely get to see any modern ones.) I loved doing worldbuilding, characters and even making some concept art. So hopefully one day I'll manage to see my own universe in various of episodes! :)
Thank you so much for talking about this! What goes on behind the scenes in cartoons has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I knew some bits and pieces of what goes into these shows, but never the full thing. Especially the order of production! And since I've been thinking about making an animated webshow, this type of stuff have been on my mind A LOT lately.
Shout out to the roundtable who are always trying to make amazing cartoon content and actually put time in and effort in their episodes you don't really get that from channels like vaildskibum
You got the definitions of sequences, scenes and shots wrong. (unless it's specific to animation, which would be weird if they actually did that and in that case you can forget what I'm about to write) - A sequence is a series of scenes that belong in 1 sequence. For an example a "car chase sequence" can start from when the person steps into the car until the end of the chase. - A scene is a location. So a car chase sequence can happen through a downtown area, then suburbs and then farm land. Those are 3 scenes (downtown, suburbs, farmland) - Then, scenes exist of different shots. E.g. In the downtown scene of the car chase sequence, there's maybe a shot from above of a car taking a sharp turn. Then ANOTHER shot from inside the police car chasing the first car. Every time the location changes, it's a different scene, even if it's part of the same sequence. So someone stepping through a door, from inside to outside is 1 sequence, *but 2 scenes* . The same counts for going into another room, those are 2 different scenes. It goes even deeper than that, because it also has to do with time. So even if you're in the same location, if you make a cut from e.g. morning to evening, it's also 2 different scenes. But that's not important here. The general public often calls things a "scene" when they actually mean sequence. And then you end up in acts, which consists of different sequences. Yes, I write screenplays 😂
Thanks so much for the advice! I've always dreamed of making an animated series and have a couple ideas in mind. It's good to keep this knowledge in mind so I can have a good plot, good characters, and other things necessary.
I work a lot differently and I do not care about the systems anymore. They suck. They have ruined the quality of animation and only few fun shows from CN are around like DC Superhero Girls. Good thing I like doing my own stories and not needing the lame studio control.
Vox thank you so much for this info. I've been trying to make a show for a year and a half but my Adobe cloud is backfiring on me so I have no animatics ^u^' but I have a lot of scripts so once I get to college and graduate I might have to make it a web series instead of a cn or nick show. but I needed this talk especially if I'm trying to do this type of job because at the moment I'm doing everything background, scripts, character design, animation but i'm not doing voices and music so I'm backed into a corner. but thank you for this info =w='
I've said for a while that I'd like to be either a showrunner or a storyboarder, but seeing the process going into those two, I feel like I should try and hone in my talents before I confidently say that I want to be one. I just want to thank you guys for posting this, it really gives a lot of insight into the whole cartoon process that I never really considered before.
Thank you for creating this video (and for the person who wrote it out). This is such a fascinating industry... I have no desire to get involved, but I love watching cartoons and it boggles my mind how they can create such variety and so much action!!
You know, I thought when I grow up I am going to be a heart surgeon, however I realized that my favorite thing to do was draw, so I figured..WHY NOT ANIMATE INSTEAD!
I miss my era of cartoons (2009-2014). which was fanboy and chum chum, fish hooks, gravity falls, mixels, pacman and the ghostly adventures, adventure time, Clarence, breadwinners, sanjay and craig, crash and Bernstein, problem solvers, chowder, the Garfield show, regular show, making fiends, Phineas and ferb, gumball, my little pony friendship was magic until like the 5th season, johnny test, wander over yonder, planet sheen, wild grinders, littlest pet shop, tuff puppy, robot and monster, grojband, almost naked animals, sidekick, penguins of madagascar, and pound puppies. cartoons gotten worse when most of those shows got of the air due to newer shows from 2015-present starting with star vs the forces of evil. I haven't seen a new nickelodeon cartoon since Bunsen is a beast.
Thank you i have been looking for something like this and i hope in the future i can be a showrunner and this has just motivated me even more to try to get into SCAD😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

Hey i just wanna say this ia an awesome video and, while im not in the industry (yet) this is pretty accurate to the animation process. I'm currently in the process of directing my own short film, and most of this is exactly stuff that my college professors have talked about. So i guess just thanks for providing an accurate look into the animation process (especially for those who maybe cant afford to go to art school or are unsure about if they think animation is for them)

Well I don't work in the industry but I do make little hand-drawn animated bits for some of my videos (my Bionicle one so far has the most for those probably). It's pretty hellish and time consuming to make those parts but it's always just so magical to see what you draw actually living and moving.

LMAOOOO
Holy WOW that’s a LOT of effort for ONE episode. I have a new appreciation for cartoons
Wow, I never knew what really goes on inside the animation industry when making a show until now. Thanks Vox👍
I'm glad you guys did this video because I've been trying to figure out how to make a cartoon .
i would love to be a writer for a show. I'm already in love with writing so i feel it would be something I'd find fun.
This was so helpful! It really made the different parts of making a show clear. Thank you!
I’m only 16 but I am already working hard to become an artist when I’m older and to work on cartoons. So watching this is helpful, interesting, and intimidating for me
This is exactly the content I love to see from this channel! It’s very inspiring and insightful, keep up the good work!
Disney seems to be much more forgiving with their hiatuses lately compared to CN and Steven Universe.
I think i will stick to making a book out of my series for now, and see where it goes from there.
I'm glad that I've stumbled upon this video in my recommended section!
I've always dreamt about having my own cartoon pitched either in my country or somewhere else where cartoons aren't exactly popular. (I live in Finland. We used to have really good cartoons, but nowdays you rarely get to see any modern ones.)
I loved doing worldbuilding, characters and even making some concept art. So hopefully one day I'll manage to see my own universe in various of episodes! :)
Nobody cares if your early just watch the video.
c a l a m a r i noice seenin u here
Amen
Wow I had no idea how much time it takes to complete one episode!
Probably more if it an anime
@@USSAnimeNCC- It does takes more in anime, since Japanese animation tends to pay more attention to detail in a lot of things, specially in animation.
*I'M SOOOOO GLAD YOU MENTION THE COLOR STYLIST!!!! THAAANK YOU!!!!!*
Lets Talk Cartoons:let’s team up
This was very helpful! Thank you so much, Sir!
Shout out to the roundtable who are always trying to make amazing cartoon content and actually put time in and effort in their episodes you don't really get that from channels like vaildskibum
Don't let anyone tell you that you need a team and can't do it by yourself, that's bullshit.. you ABSOLUTELY CAN DO IT YOURSELF
Thank you, I really enjoyed this! I have always wanted to try voice acting, Tara Strong and John DiMaggio are amazing!
Aeonfluxuation Rose:let’s team up
Same here i wanna try to do voice acting to 💯
Making a cartoon that people like is so cool and great video man :]
You got the definitions of sequences, scenes and shots wrong. (unless it's specific to animation, which would be weird if they actually did that and in that case you can forget what I'm about to write)
- A sequence is a series of scenes that belong in 1 sequence. For an example a "car chase sequence" can start from when the person steps into the car until the end of the chase.
- A scene is a location. So a car chase sequence can happen through a downtown area, then suburbs and then farm land. Those are 3 scenes (downtown, suburbs, farmland)
- Then, scenes exist of different shots.
Thanks for these edvisise man
Vox thank you so much for this info.
The only thing I feel passionate about in life is having my own animated show.
In the thumbnail you forgot the best cartoon sponegbob
I've said for a while that I'd like to be either a showrunner or a storyboarder, but seeing the process going into those two, I feel like I should try and hone in my talents before I confidently say that I want to be one. I just want to thank you guys for posting this, it really gives a lot of insight into the whole cartoon process that I never really considered before.
So glad u posted this :-) Just today I decided to change my major into digital animation so that hopefully in the future I can create my own cartoon
My brain dosent have enough space for these important informations...

*_[I'm over here watching this like I have a future outside of retail]_*
You wanna create a cartoon or somethin?
Thank you for creating this video (and for the person who wrote it out). This is such a fascinating industry... I have no desire to get involved, but I love watching cartoons and it boggles my mind how they can create such variety and so much action!!
It’s very interesting and a lot more complex then I first thought
Thank you, so much for this video. I've always wanted to do animation and this video gave me so much insight, so thanks again, Roundtable.
You know, I thought when I grow up I am going to be a heart surgeon, however I realized that my favorite thing to do was draw, so I figured..WHY NOT ANIMATE INSTEAD!
I have a couple of ideas for cartoons that have been stuck in my head for a year now and one day I would like to have them air on TV
Ok but I love how his voice went:
📈📉📈📉
Jafar’s voice was like that in Aladdin 2019.
What about Bojack Horseman or Castlevania?
I don't watch those
I didnt expected this to be accurate.... I was expecting hate watch this. Thank you for doing the research
It's amazing how complex is a cartoon production
Thank you i have been looking for something like this and i hope in the future i can be a showrunner and this has just motivated me even more to try to get into SCAD😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I went to SCAD. Its a great school!
@@Dtoons what did u major in
Alicia Jones Sequential art, with a minor in animation.
Protip: DON’T MAJOR IN SEQUENTIAL ART. Major in animation, instead. Also, learn how to do CG animation, it’s a very useful skill.
@@Dtoons shockley i wanted to go for animation anyway but thanks😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Alicia Jones:let’s team up
I'm in the process of creating an animated pilot episode for my own story~ it's about a kid becoming friends with an interdimensional space clown.
Truck I wanna see voltrons piolet so baaad
I'd LOVE to be a storyboarder! If there's two things I love drawing, it's cartoons and action poses, perfect job for me!
I've always wanted to have a cartoon of my own. I'm just scared it'll flop and nobody would watch it, or it would never get green lit...
Me too, have you already started creating your cartoon?
@@emotfaculty9292 I've been writing ideas down, kinda started created characters, so in a way, yeah!
I say risk it
Hey i just wanna say this ia an awesome video and, while im not in the industry (yet) this is pretty accurate to the animation process. I'm currently in the process of directing my own short film, and most of this is exactly stuff that my college professors have talked about. So i guess just thanks for providing an accurate look into the animation process (especially for those who maybe cant afford to go to art school or are unsure about if they think animation is for them)
I would love to be a showrunner i'll have writers including myself, character designers, editors,a composer, and voice actors to make Colorcons a cool cartoon on Netflix or Disney.
I want to create my own cartoon when I’m older but I just have absolutely no idea how to jump into the industry it’s so hard to find a starting point
I would love characterization and voice acting
I LOVE THIS VIDEO, AND I'M GOING INTO ANIMATION SO I'M GOING TO NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET! THANKS "ROUNDTABLE", ANIMATION HERE I COME!😍🤣
Color stylist! That's what their called!
The color stylists for Steven Universe deserve some mad respect! Tell me I'm not the only one who notices how often the lighting changes in that show!
Wow :o
That’s so cool!!
I didn’t realize how all these good shows were made!so cool!!
Thanks for telling us!^^
One day people will recognize my original characters everywhere, this is my goal!
That's also my goal. I hope both of us get our dreams
Me too
Same here!
Hope y'all reach your dreams!
8:37 as soon as the background changes, that's a new scene.
Wrong
Thank you, Vox. I still want to become an animator. Now, I’m more determined.
“Taking into account lighting, taking into account lighting changes....” Oops lol
Bombs and hiatuses are largely why I will never wanna make a cartoon for Cartoon Network
After watching this, I am still wanting to work for animation in the future.
HILDAAAAAH! WHERE U AT? 😵😵😵
...why is hilda not in the thumbnail 🙃🙃🙃
Also I enjoy storyboard and learning about it.
Gah, im gonna animate to Newgrounds and UA-cam for some years...
Well I don't work in the industry but I do make little hand-drawn animated bits for some of my videos (my Bionicle one so far has the most for those probably). It's pretty hellish and time consuming to make those parts but it's always just so magical to see what you draw actually living and moving.
