Ved, you did the right thing to stop the 13th day grand bhoj for 1000 people. But such practices are not prescribed in Hindu scriptures. Most Hindus have evolved out of these ku-rivaj, ku-reety. In Western India, people invite only a few family members on the 13th day. Some even send Whatsapp message to all saying, 'Kriya, 11th, 12th, 13th day ceremonies will not be held'. There's no lash out from anyone. Even in villages, people don't stretch themselves beyond their pockets. So this kind of strictly punishing social pressure is not the norm across all Hindu societies across India.
