I remember getting this song in a cd with guitar player magazine back in the day, tab and a lil breakdown inside. Was absolutely blown away. Great times. Funnily enough got a Caparison then at one point around 2007 purely because of Chris Amott (and Michael Romeo).
Hey man, I must say that the fact that you're doing these is truly amazing. It's really inspiring to be able to learn from you. Thanks a lot for all your hard work. Cheers!
Just referenced this album on my latest mix, killer sound for sure. I'm guessing you've made one already, but how about Puritanical Euphoric Misannthropia by Dimmu?
Josh these videos are so freaking cool! My guitar tones have improved IMMENSELY after seeing your NTM! Thank you so much for doing these! You are a blessing to the guitar community! Since you asked for more sugguestions, I would really love to see tone recreations for The Poison - BMFV , End of Heartache - Killswitch Engage , and Dead Heart In A Dead World - Nevermore
Holy shit! Great Job as always, sir. Fun stuff, i did almost same eq thingy with guitars years ago by trying "match" Nevermore's - TGE tone with pod farm and 3rd party free impulses, came pretty close with overall mix, but fucked up with dat signature drum "compression". Sneap's snare pop still is a big question for me.
Would love to see your approach to the Keith Merrow/Conquering Dystopia "dark yet present" tones he always manages to come by. Very distinct, and you can pick him out right away when you hear it. Great content as always, Josh.
Thank you for the video! The issue I'm having here is with the exact settings on XXX my tone doesn't sound as tight and it's flabby. I'm using an ltd with Het Set. Thanks again!!
My guess is that multiband compressor he has in the signal chain "ducking down the low end". That way he's not removing the low end. Just the boomy resonant peaks. Probably using a passive pickup as well based on his passing mention of the JB.
Ok so it's normal you say. I am not using a comp just the plugin for starters. I am noticing this to a lot of demos around YT. Everyone's sound from the get go is tight as f@@k by "just using the plugin"@@MeTuLHeD
@@BettyTheRaccoon But that's my whole point. He's not "just using the plug in". There's a lot going on in this mix. As he states from the outset, he's using some pretty heavy handed EQ moves. The Waves C4 multiband compressor that he's using is only 30 bucks. I first heard about it on the Sneap forum and I've been using it on heavy guitar mixes ever since. It perfectly controls that low end wooliness without radical EQ...even though he does that too! LOL!
Josh: This is good stuff! I really like when you explain all your EQ moves! Other guitar tones I would love to see/hear is Bands like Mortiferum, Cerebral Rot, Spectral Voice. Basically a little more “Underground Death Metal tones….just to get a little something different😊 Cheers!!
In flames - soundtrack to your escape would be very cool. Its not the best guitar tone but its so different and special in my opinion, and from the same periode as this one🤘🏻
agreed! but i've never heard anything similar in terms of aggressiveness and at the same time clarity (guitars / drums mix) like STtYE. there is so much distortion in guitars but it sounds amazing and not bring any tiredness to ears. it is a brilliant mixing work imo.
Incredible tone, amazing job replicating it. What do you think about the first Wintersun albums rhythm sound? Would be cool to hear you recreate that, love the scooped chewyness of it (if that makes any sense) 😂
I'd love to see you emulate the tone of Testament's 'Brotherhood Of The Snake' song. Of course it's good old Sneap production, Beast! Think you'll like it if you dont know it Josh :) All the best!
The good thing about modern guitar tone like this is it is very clear and a little transparent. So the attack is very precise. The really bad thing about it is it is thin, cold, and scrapey. It lacks weight and warmth. There is no thickness to it. Bands like Nile, Carcass, and Cannibal Corpse have mastered that balance of clarity, attack, and balls heavy warmth.
It'd be cool to get your take on guitar tones from Avenged Sevenfold City of Evil, Self Titled or Nightmare. All slound great in the context they were used in but they're dramatically different album to album.
i track straight into a focusrite interface. The interface shouldn't make a big difference though as long as you're recording a clean DI. The only differences will be fresh strings, the guitar, the pickups you're using and how aggressively you pick the strings. Usually when I'm mixing bands - weak picking technique makes it the hardest thing to get a good guitar tone. Not saying that's the issue you're having!
@@JoshMiddletonOfficial thanks i go directly into my focusrite as well and i pick very aggressively so i don't think thats the problem then. I use emg 81s in an explorer. Maybe it's an input level thing? Do you set it to stay on green with yellow peaks on the focusrite or do you zero your level?
@@JoshMiddletonOfficial thanks Josh. Just got the iconic and it’s quite impressive for what it is. Would love to see you do a demo so I can see how you would dial it in.
Let us task Mr. Middleton with a proper Tone Rec challenge shall we? Recorded in 1988. Cold. Crushing. I ask if you please recreate the iconic tone of the masterpiece that is …And Justice For All.
finally a guy that really know what hes talking about
Josh is a Andy Sneap forum OG and was already a legend back then ;)
Sneap and Hansen...metal masters. 👍🏻

Yes for Puritanical Euphoric Misannthropia!

@JoshMiddletonOfficial at how much dbs do you track your guitar DIs? -10?
I always loved this albums guitar tones. Spot on!
Would love to hear your take on some more Sneap tones! Maybe This Godless Endeavour, Genesis, and/or The Ills of Modern Man

Simply amazing, is there any chance to have a drum mix tutorial?, those drums sounds sick!
Love old Arch Enemy. Saw them twice with Angela on the stage. 2009 ans 2011
Josh! Love your mixing tutorials man!
Man.. this has always been one of my favourites. Bang on with the tone.
One of my all time favourite albums, for the songs and the tones.
Would love to see your approach to the Keith Merrow/Conquering Dystopia "dark yet present" tones he always manages to come by. Very distinct, and you can pick him out right away when you hear it. Great content as always, Josh.
Sounds amazing, I've always loved the way you make metal sound.
Josh the tone king. Such a sick tone
Sounds badass! Also good explanations, clear to understand 😊
Oh man... Now i have to try to recreate this on my quad cortex. One of my absolute favorite album tones. Very well done!
Didn’t know this album well but will definitely have to give it a listen now.

A video about Arch Enemy's more classic albums like Black Earth and specially Stigmata would be much better

Your mix in the intro sounds better than the original album lol
Josh, can we do peter wichers tone from Soilwork next? Or his work with warrel Dane on "praises to the war Machine" 🤘🏻
I know there for a few tours Chris Amott was using JSX live
What are you using for the drums? They sound almost identical to the original. I’m guessing Metal Machinery?

All the best!
Josh can you recreate the "Worship Decay" tone?
Hey Josh what about tbe obzen tone from meshuggah?
Obzen tone / mix isn't particularly good. Even meshuggah will admit that. Headache inducing if you listen too long.
Sounds sick! Could you make a Kemper profile as well?
I'd definitely pay for Kemper pack of emulated tones where the amp section is just a DI of the head(s) and the cab section has all this post-EQ magic.
amazing!
Yep, typical Andy Sneap mix. Everything is crystal clear.
I'd like to see you match the guitar tone from The Fathomless Mastery by Bloodbath.
☠️☠️☠️super COOL☠️☠️☠️Josh⭐⭐⭐arch enemy🇧🇷
How about some sort of Metalcore tone? I know people are gonna suggest KSE, but I love Shadows Are Security, personally.
Nice! I'd be interested to know what you have on your master bus?
SSL bus comp. Attack 30, Release quickest, 2:1 ratio. Then Flatline for clipping and Pro-L limiter

Including Nile and Cannibal in the same sentence as clarity for guitar tones is a bold move lol
@@the_hippykiller22 have you seen them live? They have outstanding clarity on their tone.
Ohms do not have any impact on the frequency response of a cab. Maybe you just stumbled upon brighter 16 ohm cabs
Maybe Death tone recreation?
Amon Amarth - Raise Your Horns
Yeah that's a nice Sneap tone...maybe
It'd be cool to get your take on guitar tones from Avenged Sevenfold City of Evil, Self Titled or Nightmare. All slound great in the context they were used in but they're dramatically different album to album.
I still havent been able to get ur amps in stl to sound good i think im struggling with amp sims in general
Sybreed - Antares?
Awesome Josh, can't wait! 😍
Sybreed Is Awesome!! 🤘🤘
I would love to see you craft some metal tones with a Marshall head! Children of Bodom, maybe? 🤔
Second this
Try matching 'A Skeletal Domain' from Cannibal Corpse 🙏
I love you. So nice.

@@runxzze123 You could go around green to yellow. As long as it's not red. Just try adjusting the level input on the plugin or the gain on the amp
Definitely worth just trying other guitars (or even tracking a friend with another guitar)

Yeah. Even though there's usually barely anything down there
@@JoshMiddletonOfficial thank you for reply! i'm watching/listening you since your sweep picking lessons here and also like your band a lot!
