    The reason her bubble gown is blue in the stage production is because they couldn’t obtain the rights to make it pink back in the late 90s/early 2000s while creating the show. Same reason they have to use the original silver shoes rather than ruby.

    I think they chose pink to connect Wicked with the 1939 Wizard of Oz film, where Glinda wears a pink dress. That could just be me, though

    • @Rose_Bride
      @Rose_Bride 10 днів тому +47

      @@caril.9384 This is what I think as well. They even went out of their way to make the dress and it's accompanying accessories (her crown and wand) look similar to the 1939 versions. Ultimately, it is simply an updated version of that dress (or maybe a better phrase would be to call it an "inspired" version). But it was immediately clear that that was what they were going for.

    • @CinemaOverAnalyzed

      I agree. The second official trailer for Wicked is marketed as a "prequel" to The Wizard of Oz. Which isn't really accurate (that's neither here nor there) So it would make sense that she would be wearing pink.

    I suspect they might be doing a Legally Blonde with Glinda, where she'll drift away from pink when she's in the midst of being manipulated, and determinedly returning to it at the end when *she* decides who she wants to be. And similar to Elle Woods, going back to pink doesn't have to mean a regression in character development back to who she was as Galinda.
    On a more pragmatic level, as some others said I think it's likely that they took 'pink goes good with green' and ran with it so they can flood the marketing and merchandise with the two colours. It's much easier to declare yourself 'Team Elphaba' or 'Team G(a)linda' (a division which misses the whole point) if you can buy things in either pink or green. And cheaper to produce if you only have to make two varients of any product.

    I prefer the blue, and I liked that Galinda/Glinda wore multiple colors because I always loved the yellow dress.
    I would like to add a small no te onto the white, because it's a color that can do a lot in terms of simbolism, yes it means simplicity and innocence, but it's also the color that can be turned into all the others depending on what light shines on it, so it's great to be worne by characters who have not yet decided who they want to be or in which direction they want to go.
    I'm not in love with Galinda/Glinda's costumes on the movie, despite them being gorgeus, but it would be interesting to see what they do in part 2 (glad to know they are breaking away from Galinda/Glinda wearing only pink). Galinda doesn't really get to dress as Glinda in the movie, as she wears the dress in which she changes her name through all defying gravity, so I guess we'll get to see how Glinda dresses in part 2 and maybe the pink bubble dress would work for that narrative.

    • @CinemaOverAnalyzed
      @CinemaOverAnalyzed  8 днів тому +4

      All be honest, I have a lot more respect for that yellow dress now that I thoroughly researched why she wears it. I was a little disappointed when it wasn't used in the film.
      Thank you for adding more details about the symbolism of white! I truly enjoy that both Fiyero and Galinda wear it. It really shows, like you said, that the possibilities of what they could become are endless.

    I think the pink is really to juxtapose how glinda is truly the good witch and elfie is the bad one, since the pastel pink is really soft and inviting rather than the distinct green and i think if they did follow with blue it would be a bit different as i feel blue is more a distinct/ generic colour and is not girly enough for glinda, and also since they were probably paying homage to wicked the musical and the wizard of oz, but i think marketing could be more distict and new if they chose blue since it would be less barbie and maybe seen as more of wicked, so i think in terms of marketing, blue would be better but yeah, ariana/ glinda is very playful and girly, and blue seems like a more mature colour, perhaps the reasoning behind part 2 being more blue than pink is to showcase the maturity that glinda has grown into, but either way wicked ate and i cannot wait for part 2.

      …it represents how shallow and meaningless and purely performative her actions are in trying to ingratiate herself with people when she wants something.
      She chooses to change her name in the musical and movie to seem like she’s just as affected by Dr Dillamond’s absence as Elphaba, who is currently having a very sincere conversation with Fiyero. She feels left out of the conversation and wants to reaffirm her presence.
      It’s an empty, meaningless gesture.
      In the books, it’s far more sincere. Especially as the professor was found dead, his throat slashed. And she was _genuinely_ affected and horrified.

But I love all incarnations of Glinda. The blue Broadway dress always made me think of the original Queen Frostine from the Candy Land board game. I'm glad you made this video. I had similar thoughts about how Galinda/Glinda's costumes in the stage musical tell an important story about who she is and how she changes throughout the show. The costumes in the movie, while beautiful, didn't seem to do any storytelling. To be clear, I thought the movie was phenomenal in almost all ways, and I don't think the costume changes ruin the movie or anything, it's just an area where the movie could have been even stronger. To me, the biggest flaw was in making her Shiz uniform pink. It's established in the stage show that Shiz's school uniform is in the school colors of blue and white (this appears to be the case in the movie as well). The rest of the students' costumes in both the stage show and movie comply with that. Elphaba and Galinda comply with the dress code in the stage show (wearing blue and white respectively), but not in the movie, where they just seem to break the dress code to wear "their colors" (black and pink respectively). Galinda's choice to wear all white in the stage show is notable. Who else would be bold enough to wear all white? Only Galinda. She's still following the rules. But she wears white as a way to stand out among her fellow students, while still staying within the parameters of societal norms and expectations, in a system that is designed to favor and privilege her. She's not going to rebel against the system at this point. She has a hard time setting aside convention, which is why she just can't leave with Elphaba at the end of Act 1. Even later, when she decides that she wants to truly do good, she does so by working within the system to create change rather than bucking it altogether, as Elphaba does. I really appreciate your point that her bubble dress connects to Elphaba's Shiz uniform through their common blue color in the stage show. It's a subtle way of showing that Glinda no longer will blindly roll along with convention and the oppressive political system the Wizard maintained. I could say more, but this comment is already long enough! 😅

    God, I hate how much pink and purple G(a)linda wears in the film... It just starts hurting my eyes after a while. I agree there is a lot of visual storytelling in her costumes in the show on top of the fact that they just plain... look better. But, of course, that's just an opinion. For me, the overabundance of pink is just so distracting in the movie that it almost takes away from the depthof her character. She felt like a cartoon. She's dressed basically like Elle Woods the whole time, but in Legally Blonde the pink served a very specific function - she was one bright spot amid all of the dull, dark colours. It doesn't work in Wicked for me at all - it's bright on bright and brighter, and it doesn't say anything.
