@@Baci302 a mahogany slab loaded with P90's should always sound good, no matter the shape of the mahogany body... I am glad you liked it. It is a lot of fun to play for sure! Cheers,
That was my first electric guitar, Christmas of '74. Mine was a little older, I think. Bought used for next to nothing. Never could find a bar for it. Loved the sound but hated the neck. Super thin and narrow down low and super fat and wide above the 12th fret. Nice performance. I dug it.
I understand! These necks are not liked by many, and that is the reason they didn't last long in the production and why these are still affordable by now. I've got used to it but whenever I have to play fingerstyle stuff close to the nut, it can be a struggle. Thanks for checking it out!
Glad you like it! I will try to make more videos using the Vibrola, but check out my version of Something, and other videos with the SG where I use that setup. Cheers!
First of all congratulations on your beautiful SG and your perfect rendition of "Sleepwalk" 🙂🙂 Second : I never thought of stringing a Vibrola tailpiece this way with only the G and B strings attached to it... I suppose that, since it only takes the tension of two strings ( especially unwound strings ) it will be less prone to tuning drift... Of course a well-cut nut with well-cut slots, perhaps some lubrication and the strings being stretched will help...I do the same on my '65 Junior which also has a Vibrola tailpiece... But thanks to you I'm going to try that trick with just a few strings attached to it... Thanks 👍👍
@@UffeSteenGuitar the original pickup is a P90 (still have it), but currently I have installed a Kinman P90 HX 580, which is Kinman's recreation of the Staple Alnico V pickup on old Les Paul Customs. The pickup sounds great and it is super quiet (no hum), although a bit expensive.
@@doctor7music91 sounds great, how would you rate the 580 ? Would be great to have an in-depth demo of this pup, there’s none on the web except this cool cover of yours
@@anfasup3160 Thanks for the kind words! The pickup is really great. Last weekend I put back the original P90 (after 3 years using the 580 non-stop) for a couple of recordings I am working on, so won't be making new videos anytime soon with the 580, but the 580 sounds close to a Dynasonic or a real staple, like the ones you see on old Les Pauls. I have never personally played one of those pickups, so can't really say they sound exactly the same but it has a beautiful tone, and it is different from a traditional P90. It has some "strat" qualities to it due to the magnetic poles, rather than screws, but fatter than a strat, of course. It is brighter than a P90, but if you turn the volume down a notch (without a treble bleed mod) or turn down the tone, it will get you closer to a P90 tone. It does not "roar" quite like a P90 when overdriven, but still sounds good with distortion/overdrive, and it is super quiet! I personally prefer how it sounds cleaner (like in this video). Hope this helps.
So…is there not a tailpiece cover? Or did that come later? I have a 1970 SG Special and similarly no cover..just wondering… seems like something missing and then perfection achieved (in looks at least)
Love your vibrola sounds! Something about the vibrola just sounds much better than a Bigbsy to me. Have you tried the Duesenberg Les Trem? Curious if it would sound as good.
Thanks! Are you asking where to find a similar tremolo? You can find some repro parts online, but I can't guarantee their quality. Vintage ones can be more expensive but at least they seem to be somewhat reliable, like mine. Your first bet could be ebay, but bear in mind that you will have to drill 3 screws on your Explorer. I presume it is not a vintage example from the late 50's?
Totally agree!! SG’s can be used for so many styles, in fact, my most viewed video is my oldest here where I play some country licks with the Vibrola, and with a treble booster I can truly make it sound like a Tele.
@@doctor7music91 Thats a good, great playing. I've watched that video a few times, I wanted to figure out what you were playing exactly. I have a LP Special with p90s that sounds great for country too. No vibrola yet though. I look forward to more of your videos.
The pickup is amazing, no cons really other than price. I sold the neck pickup because I was not using it much on my gigs (just because of songs selection, nothing else) but kept the bridge. I am thinking about buying another again for the neck position.
@@doctor7music91 is it really a p90 sound or do you hear it as a cross between a jazzmaster / p90 ? How does it perform with overdrive & are you using 500k pots ? Thanks !
@@anfasup3160 I am using 500k pots and the volume reacts well. With regards to the P90 sound, it really depends… I have a 1957 Es-125 with P90 but the guitar is totally different from the SG, and I understand that P90’s vary between years, so it is difficult to compare. The staple pickup, which this tries to recreate is also a different pickup from the P90 and I never played one with an SG so can’t comment. What I can say is that the P90 HX in the bridge position does not sound exactly like the original P90 from 1968, but I honestly think it sounds better (brighter and better balanced), besides being even quieter than humbuckers.
@@anfasup3160 no, the P90hx is the one I have in the bridge position, which is not featured in this video. When I said about the staple pickup, I am referring to the 580. Sorry for the confusion!

Si puedes, escucha mi version de "Something" de los Beatles, ya que ahi muestro como hago los bends en el solo mientras mantengo los bajos intactos.
@@doctor7music91 seriously, my friend.. I just ordered an SG with a trem last week and I'm impatiently awaiting it's arrival. Your video could not have come at a worse time!!! Really well done.
@@opiumdennis7249 the reason I asked is because the Specials come with a wraparound bridge (not the tune-o-matic), and that is why I can do the trick (or have the option) of engaging only a few strings to the Vibrola. If your SG comes with a tune-o-matic, you will have to engage all the strings to it and you will not have as much "travel" as I have by engaging only 2 strings.
@@opiumdennis7249 Bigsby are similar to Vibrolas (I have a jazz Gibson guitar with a Bigsby), but the important question is: your SG is a Standard model (with the tune-o-matic), or the Special/Junior model (with a wraparound bridge type)? If it's a Special or Junior, you will be able to do the same trick I do but with the Bigsby instead, I believe...
