The class is just a symptom of the larger issue. When I went to school for engineering I needed ~70 credits to graduate. 40 had to be from my major. The remaining 30 had to be from electives. Almost half of my degree was made up of fluff classes that could easily be substituted with a few UA-cam videos but instead take up another 2 years of school.

Employers are always asking about my knowledge and experience on Taylor Swift marketing strategies but unfortunately I was never educated on the subject during my time as a student. Has anyone in the comments been to college before? It’s very common to have certain pre requisites or electives focus on a not traditionally scholarly subject. For example, my school offered writing classes focused on anime, Harry Potter, etc. it gives students option to choose something interesting while working on their credits.
Also, case study classes are super common, and Taylor Swift is a phenomenon in terms of her music empire, so there is definitely some insights to be learned from studying her tactics.

To be clear the Berkeley class is a "decal" lol, so not officially a Berkeley course, it's made by students, is only for a little credit and is pass/no pass hahaha. People can also take decals on solving rubics cubes or differential topology so chill
I work at a Target (thanks to DEI, couldn't get a job in tech), and we sell a lot of those Little Golden Books about Taylor Swift to kids. Always kind of weirds me out when I see parents buying those, reminds me how clueless some people are.

I see no difference between this and something like Jazz Appreciation or History of Rock and Roll or any other weird elective that students need to take to pad their credit hours. Academia needs a complete curriculum restructuring from the bottom up to fix issues but don't act shocked and appalled this is a real class.
So some classes, to be fair, are “orientation classes.” The quick, 2 week classes they use to get freshman acclimated where professors teach pet projects that don’t have an impact on grade. Those SPECIFIC instances I excuse. It’s good practice for what to expect for papers, figure out the campus really well, etc.
FULL courses… that’s a big waste.
