Yes, Lockheed Martin's FFG(X) design... nothing much to see haha. It was the same at SNA back in January: Check this out (at the bottom) www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2019/03/how-lockheed-martin-plans-to-make-the-freedom-class-lcs-more-lethal-and-survivable/

@@NavalNews That updated LCS is looking much more lethal. Quad packing up to 32 ESSM in a single 8x mk41 module along with the more powerful solid state radar is going to turn them into a relatively capable medium range anti aircraft platform. Your article also points out that these are the full up strike length cells which indicates these ships could be fielding another 8x mk41 module with TLAMs if needed. With a couple armored NSM box launchers forward, the LCS is truly becoming the capable light frigate/heavy corvette its displacement suggests.
Combined with the FFG(X) program, it seems the USN is finally aggressively dealing with their extremely top heavy fleet makeup. Hopefully this will give the overworked Burkes a little rest and extend their shelf life. There are plenty of missions that have been tasked to a full up DDG that don't really require that level of capability.

Great vid👍like Freedom LCS layout but can ship take on more weight in future refits? Surprised with Navantia purpose F100 design on Australia AWD does this have ASW capability like what was purpose for Australian frigate n why has Radar system been basic? It’s able connect to US n Australian warships? Especially in fleet where frigate is outside ship of the fleet, think about distance of protection n detection of enemy attack. Lessons can be learnt from Falkland war when missle was in bound toward Sheffield the reaction time was factor.

I find it hard to be persuaded to invest in an all-up PGK round vs modifying existing rounds with the a PGK. I think it makes more sense logistically to have a lot of conventional rounds with some upgraded with the PGK sort of like how the JDAM kits enhance regular dumb bombs. It would be easier to scale up the production of PGKs if the need for more guided rounds materialize.

I could design a better FFGX than these clowns did. Both poor designs. Neither incorporate nearly enough VLS cells to be effective for much. And we need a minimum of a 5" forward gun. The first shown doesn't appt to have any aegis radar coverage at all aft leaving a serious gap.
The seconds superstructure looks hideous at best and would be an embarrassing thing to look at or serve aboard. It also makes a nice big block target.

The BAE Systems Mk110 (57mm Bofors) main gun is a requirement set by the US Navy. So each competitors in the FFG(X) program has to submit a design proposal featuring this gun otherwise they will be eliminated. FFG(X) and LCS will be getting two new "smart and guided" rounds for these guns. The ALAMO round by L3, a guided 57mm to counter swarming (surface) targets and the MADS-Fire by Raytheon to use against incoming missiles.

@@NavalNews I know the background. But we still need a larger more capable gun. One that can do much more damage and has better range. Laser systems are useless in certain conditions. And rail guns are still a way off. Hell tanks have larger guns than ships

The f100 design has room for two more 8x mk41 VLS behind the four shown in the pictures. If the USN decides they need to pack on some more firepower down the road, the option is there. Can't be sure about this part, but I believe the radar for the FFG(X) program is similar to the spy-6 in that each face is made up of smaller modular panels. There is probably room to increase the scope of the three facing radar if that's deemed necessary in the future. No idea if there is room for another two quad pack NSM canisters but I would not be surprised if that could be expanded too. Overall it looks like the ship is being designed to allow the possibility of future upgrades without much hassle. Right now the USN needs many smaller hulls to try and shift the fleet away from the current extremely top heavy fleet makeup. Marketing a slightly "cut down" version of the F100 with relatively easy upgradability seems like a good design choice.
As for the 57mm mk110, it's part of the requirement. The 57mm gun certainly has some significant disadvantages compared to a 5 inch gun when it comes to inland fire support and lethality against larger surface combatants, but it has some of its own advantages too. The mk110 is lighter and has a relatively high rof allowing it to be used as the forward CIWS. It's far more effective against missiles than the 5 inch gun.
